Smartmatic, an election technology company founded in 2000 by Venezuelan engineers in the United States (initially headquartered in Florida, 👉 now under UK-based holding 👑 company SGO Corporation Limited)👈

Hmmm 🤔 I wonder who hired those engineers...

It provided voting machines and services for multiple national elections there from 2004 to 2017, before publicly ceasing operations after alleging government manipulation in the 2017 Constituent Assembly election.

Besides Venezuela, Smartmatic has been involved in election technology deployments (including voting machines, biometric systems, results transmission, and support services) in numerous other countries:

Philippines: Major long-term partner since 2008, automating national elections starting in 2010. Smartmatic supplied vote-counting machines and services for multiple cycles, counting over 5 billion votes through 2022. However, this involvement has been highly controversial, including U.S. federal indictments (2024–2025) against company executives and the parent entity for alleged bribery and money laundering to secure 2016 contracts.

United States: Primarily in Los Angeles County (largest U.S. jurisdiction), where it developed and deployed a custom public-owned voting system (VSAP) since around 2018–2020, used in primaries, midterms, and general elections.

Earlier indirect involvement via acquisition/sale of Sequoia Voting Systems (2005–2007), which operated in multiple states.
