Bukele Refuses to Return Man Deported in Error, Defying U.S. Supreme Court

El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele has refused to return Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, a man wrongly deported from the U.S. and accused of MS-13 ties, despite a Supreme Court order mandating his return.

“There’s no way I’m going to do it,” Bukele said.

“I don’t have the power to smuggle a terrorist into the U.S.”

While denying U.S. demands, Bukele also stated Abrego Garcia won’t be freed in El Salvador:

“We’re not fond of releasing terrorists into our country.”

The U.S. had called the deportation an “administrative error.”

Trump praised Bukele as a strong partner on deportations, while U.S. officials claimed the decision now rests with El Salvador.

China Suspends Rare Earth Exports

China has suspended exports of key rare earth metals and magnets—vital for EVs, semiconductors, aerospace, and defense—after new U.S. tariffs took effect on April 2.

As of April 4, six heavy rare earths and all rare earth magnets now require export licenses, which China has yet to issue, leaving shipments stalled.

The ban affects the U.S., Japan, Germany, and others.

China produces 90% of rare earth magnets and 99% of heavy rare earths, such as dysprosium oxide, used in high-temperature, high-performance systems.

Impacted sectors include:
Electric vehicles (Tesla, BYD)
Aerospace and defense (missiles, jet engines)
Semiconductors (AI hardware)
Consumer electronics (LEDs, smartphones)

U.S. Airstrikes Prompt Plans for Yemeni Ground Offensive Against Houthis

Following a month-long U.S. air campaign targeting Houthi forces, Yemeni pro-government militias, backed by the UAE, are preparing a ground offensive to retake parts of the Red Sea coast, including the strategic port of Hodeidah.

This follows a month-long U.S. air campaign, which launched over 350 strikes since March 15, targeting Iran-backed Houthi forces in retaliation for attacks on Red Sea shipping.

A full offensive may reignite dormant civil war.

Saudi Arabia refuses to rejoin any invasion, fearing a repeat of its costly Yemen campaign. The U.S. is open to supporting a local-led ground operation but won’t lead it.

“Al-Shabaab continues to terrorize and extort the Somali people, forcing farmers to turn over livestock as ‘donations’ and kidnapping civilians, while it destabilizes the wider region through its campaign of violence,” Treasury’s Acting Assistant Secretary for Terrorist Financing Anna Morris said.
