Session #n15: Layout of Letters


All letters should include the following:

a) an appropriate greeting (e.g. Dear Sir/Madam, Dear Aunt Claire, Dear Mrs. Baker, etc.);

b) an introduction, in which you write your opening remarks (e.g. Hi! How are you?) and reason(s) for writing (e.g. I'm just writing to congratulate you on passing your exams, I'm writing to apologies for ..., We were thrilled to hear that ..., I was sorry to hear., etc.);

c) a main body. in which you write about the specific topics of the letter in detail;

d) a conclusion, in which you write your closing remarks (e.g. Please forgive me – It won't happen again, I promise; Looking forward to seeing you.!, Please write soon, Take care! Can’t wait to hear from you, I’d be better sign off now, that’s all for now); and

e) an appropriate ending (e.g. Yours faithfully +your full name, Lots of love +your first name).

📖 To "keep someone occupied" means to give them something to do for a period of time.

2️⃣ Commit yourself ➡️ make a commitment
📖 promise to do sth that requires time and loyalty.

📖 formal to come from a particular place or start in a particular situation intransitive, not in progressive

4️⃣ assure sb (that / of sth) ➡️ give an assurance /əˈʃʊərəns $ əˈʃʊr-/ noun
📖 tell sb that sth is definitely true or definitely going to happen.

Meaning:❗️People can't change basic aspects of their character, especially negative ones.❗️

Example:❗️I doubt very much that marriage will change Chris for the better. A leopard can't change its spots.❗️

♨️Bull in a china shop♨️

Meaning :❗️To be extremely clumsy.

Example : ❗️Whenever Roy is in the kitchen he breaks something, so his mother says that he's like a bull in a china shop❗️

♨️crocodile tears ♨️

Meaning : ❗️False or fake tears.❗️

Example :❗️Peter felI down but did not hurt himself. He cried crocodile tears only because he wanted his dad to buy him something.❗️
