WE HAVE BUT ONE OBLIGATION “What is your vocation? To be a good person.”—MARCUS AURELIUS, MEDITATIONS, 11.5
The Good Person vs. The Good Human

One can observe, from the subtle differences in the words themselves, that these two terms carry distinct meanings. At the same time, however, there are also aspects in which they overlap, which can be seen in their underlying essence and implications. While the words are used interchangeably in society to some extent, we will now attempt to examine and differentiate them more precisely.

The Good Person (ጥሩዉ ግለሰብ):
This refers to the outwardly visible, socially recognized virtuous behavior and values. Such traits typically include being trustworthy, honorable, honest, and so on. This concept is closely associated with Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics. According to his teaching, a good person is someone who cultivates habits of action based on generally accepted standards of right judgment. The criteria for this virtue are determined by the community surrounding the person. In other words, this is a character that demonstrates a commitment to the identity and well-being of those within one’s circle.

For example, in a society where cannibalism is permitted, a person who respects the values and practices of that society—even if it involves cannibalism—would be considered a good person because they uphold and maintain the community’s standards.

The Good Human (ጥሩዉ ሰዉ):
This represents a more expansive and rare form of virtue that goes beyond local or customary norms. Whereas the good person focuses inwardly on their immediate circle, the good human extends their concern outward. This perspective evaluates individual choices in terms of their global impact. It considers future generations and beings outside the human sphere, thereby shaping identity based on the broader consequences of one’s actions.

This approach aligns with a result-oriented philosophy and resonates particularly with Emmanuel Levinas’s idea that “responsibility for the Other is our own ethical duty.”

Ig in this context we have to be a good human rather than a good person.

A quantum mechanical system behind a barrier can have varying amounts of energy, but it can only absorb or emit specific amounts of this energy. The system is quantised. Tunnelling occurs more easily at a higher energy level than at a lower one so, statistically, a system with more energy is held captive for less time than one with less energy.

This year’s #NobelPrize laureates in physics conducted experiments with an electrical circuit in which they demonstrated both quantum mechanical tunnelling and quantised energy levels in a system big enough to be held in the hand.
Later on this day the literature winner will be announced
Job 19:25-27 ASV

[25] But as for me I know that my Redeemer liveth, And at last he will stand up upon the earth: [26] And after my skin, even this body, is destroyed, Then without my flesh shall I see God; [27] Whom I, even I, shall see, on my side, And mine eyes shall behold, and not as a stranger. My heart is consumed within me.

ALWAYS HAVE A MENTAL REVERSE CLAUSE

“Indeed, no one can thwart the purposes of your mind—for they can’t be touched by fire, steel, tyrany, slander, or anything.”

ALWAYS HAVE A MENTAL REVERSE CLAUSE “Indeed, no one can thwart the purposes of your mind—for they can’t be touched by fire, steel, tyrany, slander, or anything.” —MARCUS AURELIUS, MEDITATIONS, 8.41
Obstacles are a part of life—things happen, stuff gets in our way, situations go awry. But nothing canstop the Stoic mind when it’s operating properly, because in every course of action, it has retained“a reverse clause.

”What’s that? It’s a backup option. If a friend betrays us, our reverse clause is to learn from how thishappened and how to forgive this person’s mistake. If we’re thrown in prison, our reverse clause is thatwe can refuse to be broken by this change of events and try to be of service to our fellow prisoners. Whena technical glitch erases our work, our reverse clause is that we can start fresh and do it beter this time. Our progress can be impeded or disrupted, but the mind can always be changed—it retains the power toredirect the path.

Part of this is remembering the usual course of things—Murphy’s Law states that “if anything can gowrong, it will.” So we keep this reverse clause handy because we know we’re probably going to have touse it. No one can thwart that.

-I think that work is a privilege, as it brings more than just sustaining life. Work is the foundation of all businesses, the source of prosperity, and the shaper of genius. Work makes young people work harder and do more than their parents no matter how rich they are. Work is expressed in the humblest forms and lays the foundation for happiness. A job helps to add flavours to life. But people must love work before it can return the biggest favours and achieve the greatest results.
