✅ Jackson heading for likely confirmation despite GOP darts
Federal Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson faced down a barrage of Republican questioning Wednesday about her sentencing of criminal defendants, as her history-making bid to join the Supreme Court veered from lofty constitutional questions to attacks on her motivations on the bench.
During more than 22 hours of hearings over two days, GOP senators aggressively questioned her on the sentences she has handed down to child pornography offenders in her nine years as a federal judge, her legal advocacy on behalf of terror suspects at Guantanamo Bay, her thoughts on critical race theory and even her religious views.
President Joe Biden chose Jackson in February, fulfilling a campaign pledge to nominate a Black woman to the Supreme Court. She would take the seat of Justice Stephen Breyer, who announced in January that he would retire this summer after 28 years.

🌱 Cannabis stocks soar after report says Congress plans vote on federal legalization of the drug next week
The US House of Representatives will vote next week on the Marijuana Opportunity, Reinvestment and Expungement act, a bill that would remove cannabis from the list of federally-controlled substances.
The legalization of marijuana is an issue that has garnered bipartisan support, and while chances are good that a bill would pass the House and the Senate. Marijuana is legalized for recreational use in 18 states, and is legalized for medical use in 38 states.
Recreational legalization of the drug at the federal level would more than double the geographical target market for marijuana growers, refiners, and distributors.

🚫 White House vows to block abortion bans as Idaho signs 6-week ban into law
The Biden administration on Wednesday pledged to block abortion bans in the US as Idaho adopts a Texas-style law banning abortions after about six weeks.
Earlier this week, Idaho's Republican Gov. Brad Little signed the abortion ban into law, modeled after the Texas legislation, which relies on private citizens to enforce the ban via lawsuits.
The Supreme Court is set to decide this summer whether to uphold or overturn Roe v. Wade, a landmark decision that gave women the right to choose to have an abortion. So far, 12 states have "trigger laws," as they are colloquially known, in place to ban abortions if SCOTUS decides to overturn Roe v. Wade.

🌫 Alaska air pollution holds clues for other Arctic climates
Some of the most polluted winter air in the United States can be found in and around Fairbanks, Alaska. The Fairbanks North Star Borough routinely exceeds limits set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for particle pollution that can be inhaled and cause myriad health problems.
Over seven weeks this winter, nearly 50 scientists from the US and Europe descended on Fairbanks to study the sources of air pollution. The researchers are expected to deliver the findings back to the university by late summer. The results will be shared with the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, Fairbanks’ air quality division and with residents, who will have the chance to weigh in on possible solutions.

Another gem from Kiev: apparently, the Ukrainian National Guard tweeted an infographic claiming that the Eastern European country had been bombed more heavily in 22 days than Syria in the past 5 years. They may have deleted the tweet but the Internet remembers.
ICYMI: The Kiev regime has been deleting a lot lately: just yesterday, the Ukrainian parliament had to take down a tweet comparing Kharkov to Hamburg in Nazi Germany
