➡️Aiming to turn months of legislative accomplishments into political energy, US President Joe Biden sought to underscore voters' choice in the congressional midterm elections as he led a kickoff rally and a fundraiser in Maryland on Thursday.

Speaking to hundreds of the party faithful in Maryland, just outside Washington, Biden sought to build on growing energy in the party, which believes it can fend off a threatened Republican victory in the Nov 8 vote.

Earlier, in remarks ahead of the speech, Biden likened Trump's "Make America Great Again" brand as "extreme." The Republican National Committee called Biden's comments "despicable."

"Biden forced Americans out of their jobs, transferred money from working families to Harvard lawyers, and sent our country into a recession while families can't afford gas and groceries," said spokesperson Nathan Brand. "Democrats don't care about suffering Americans; they never did."

✝️Pope Francis elevated 20 more churchmen to the rank of cardinal on Saturday, formally expanding those now eligible to vote for his successor in case he dies or resigns — the latter a step he has said he’d consider if the need arises.

Of the churchmen being named new cardinals in the consistory ceremony in St. Peter’s Basilica, 16 are younger than 80 and thus eligible to participate in a conclave — the ritual-shrouded, locked-door assembly of cardinals who cast paper ballots to elect a new pontiff.

The 85-year-old Francis has now named 83 of the 132 cardinals currently young enough to join a conclave. The others were appointed by the previous two popes, St. John Paul II and Benedict XVI, whose unexpected retirement in 2013 paved the way for Francis to be elected.

With the eight batches of cardinals Francis has named, prospects are boosted that whoever becomes the next pontiff will share his vision for the church's future.

🌊☔️🌨Floods have killed over 900 people in Pakistan and destroyed about 220,000 homes. The government speaks of a "climate-induced humanitarian disaster of epic proportions."

The situation in the country's southwest is critical: All four highways connecting Balochistan with the other provinces are either blocked or destroyed. Rail traffic has had to be suspended, and since important fiber-optic cables have been damaged, all regional communications are also down. About 220,000 houses were destroyed, and 33 million people are without a permanent home.

According to official figures, the floods, which mainly affect the south, are comparable to those of 2010, when more than 2,000 people died, and almost one-fifth of the country was underwater.

🤝French President Emmanuel Macron and his Algerian counterpart Abdelmadjid Tebboune have declared a “new, irreversible dynamic of progress” in their nations’ ties, concluding a visit by Macron aimed at ending months of tensions.

The three-day visit that ended on Saturday came less than two months after Algeria marked six decades of independence following 132 years of French rule and devastating eight-year war.

In their joint declaration, the two leaders said “France and Algeria have decided to open a new era … laying the foundation for a renewed partnership expressed through a concrete and constructive approach, focused on future projects and youth.”

⚖️ Mark Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg were in line to give hours of depositions in response to a lawsuit over Facebook* and the Cambridge Analytica data privacy scandal, but now that won’t happen — the company has reached a settlement agreement with the plaintiffs. A court filing reveals the parties have reached an agreement in principle and requested a stay of 60 days to finalize their written agreement

Now, Zuckerberg will only have to take questions from Joe Rogan and talk about new VR headsets, instead of going under oath in front of opposing counsel about the details of what happened within his company around the time of the 2016 election.

The lawsuit alleged that Facebook illegally shared user data with third parties, and said the company didn’t adequately protect that data from being abused by bad actors.

🎥One week into the school year, a fourth-grade Utah teacher was placed on paid leave for sharing a video on social media in which she stated that her classroom was "built for nonwhite students."

The teacher started the video by explaining that she was just hired at William Penn Elementary School. "For the first time in my life, I'm going to teach at a majority-white school, and I'm interested to see how students and parents react to my classroom, or if they even notice anything about it because it's built for nonwhite students."

The teacher concluded the video by stating that she predicts parents might have something to say about her classroom materials based on her prior experience with "posh white parents." KUTV reported that the teacher was placed on paid leave after the video was brought to the attention of the Granite School District.

🔥A wildfire in remote southwest Oregon almost quadrupled overnight Saturday, forcing evacuations and prompting the governor to invoke an emergency act that allows the state fire marshal to take command of suppression efforts.

The Rum Creek Fire, which had covered around 1,200 acres on Friday, increased to 4,700 acres in size, Gov. Kate Brown's office said Saturday.

Authorities also ordered evacuations as a wildfire grew in rugged terrain in western Idaho. The Valley County Sheriff’s Office said on Facebook Saturday that evacuation preparedness for some neighborhoods in the rural area “have been changed to a “GO” status, and we are initiating an immediate evacuation of the area.”

Planes were scooping water from nearby Lake Cascade and dumping it on the fire, which had grown to 10,000 acres. Boaters were warned to stay clear of the path of the aircraft.

🚨A Walmart, as well as several houses, were temporarily evacuated on Saturday afternoon after police said they received reports of a shooting in the area.

The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office said three adults and five juveniles were detained in connection to the incident.

Sheriff Javier Salazar said deputies were dispatched to a home along the 74 block of Estrid Trail near the Walmart at FM-78 and Crestway in Converse.

My understanding is there was a series of shootings overnight that did not involve injuries, thankfully -- but still obviously a huge cause for concern -- and one of the suspects may have been at this home,” Salazar said during a news conference. When authorities arrived at the home, Salazar said authorities heard two gunshots. They also found several people in the backyard, whom all scattered into an alley and toward Walmart when they saw police.
