🇮🇪 ‘Insanity’: Irish teacher jailed after refusing to ‘call a boy a girl’

Enoch Burke, a teacher who refused to use a student's preferred gender-neutral pronouns (the transitioning student wanted to be addressed as “they” rather than “he,” as requested by the student and parents) has been jailed after breaking a subsequent court order that banned him from teaching at his Westmeath school or even visit it.

After the ruling was delivered, Burke said: "It is insanity that I will be led from this courtroom to a place of incarceration, but I will not give up my Christian beliefs ... Transgenderism is against my Christian belief."

💬 "My religious beliefs are not misconduct. They are not gross misconduct. They never will be. They are dear to me. I will never deny them and never betray them, and I will never bow to an order that would require me to do so. It is just not possible for me to do that," Enoch Burke added.

He told the court that even if he had to remain in prison for “every hour of every day for the next 100 years,” he would not compromise his beliefs or agree to comply with the terms of the court order.
