🇬🇧👑 Last week, shortly after the UK's Queen’s death was announced, the word "Kohinoor" started trending on Indian Twitter.

As British colonial rule spread across the globe, so did the stealing of great treasures that did not belong to them.

Now, countries want their treasures back.

⚡️Russia has outsized influence with both Armenia and Azerbaijan, US calls on Moscow to use that influence to help achieve peace - State Dept.
❗️The United States urges Russia to use its particular influence over Armenia and Azerbaijan to help broker peace after clashes between their border forces erupted once more last night, State Department spokesman Ned Price said on Tuesday.

▪️“Russia has outsized influence with both Azerbaijan and Armenia. We have called on Russia, and we do call on Russia, to use that influence and leverage in a way that helps to achieve a cessation of hostilities, and more broadly, a de-escalation of those tensions,” Price said during a press briefing.

▪️US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has also been personally engaged on the issue, speaking with both countries’ leaders and urging them toward a peaceful resolution of tensions. The US does not believe there to be a military solution to their territorial dispute, according to Price.

📉The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped more than 1,250 points Tuesday, its steepest sell-off in more than two years after a government report showed that inflation maintains a surprisingly strong grip on the U.S. economy.

Bond prices also fell sharply, sending their yields higher, after a report showed inflation decelerated only to 8.3% in August, instead of the 8.1% economists expected.

The hotter-than-expected reading has traders bracing for the Federal Reserve to ultimately raise interest rates even higher than expected to combat inflation, with all the risks for the economy that entails. Fears about higher rates sent prices dropping for everything from gold to cryptocurrencies to crude oil. Technology and other high-growth companies fell more than the rest of the market because they’re most at risk from higher rates.

⚖️West Virginia lawmakers on Tuesday passed a sweeping abortion ban that prohibits the procedure even in the earliest days of pregnancy, with limited exceptions in cases of rape, incest, and when the mother's health is at risk.

The bill, which now goes to Governor Jim Justice for his signature, is the second abortion ban passed by a state after the deeply conservative U.S. Supreme Court overturned the 49-year-old Roe v Wade decision that established a constitutional right to the procedure.

The measure, which Justice is expected to sign, comes as differences are beginning to emerge among Republicans over how strict about making abortion bans ahead of the November elections that will decide control of Congress.

Ken Starr, who headed the investigation that led to the impeachment of President Bill Clinton for lying about his affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky, died today. He was 76.

Starr died in Houston, Texas, of complications from surgery, his family said in a statement. A former judge and conservative legal stalwart, Starr was best known for leading the probe that resulted in Clinton’s December 1998 impeachment by the then Republican-controlled House of Representatives.

The Democratic president was acquitted by the Senate the following year. Starr’s involvement with Clinton began when he was appointed special counsel in 1994 to investigate a land deal known as Whitewater involving Bill and Hillary Clinton.

💠In recent days, police have arrested people protesting the monarchy, raising questions about the authorities’ upholding the freedom of speech. A man was charged with a breach of the peace after he heckled Prince Andrew as the queen’s hearse traveled through the Scottish capital.

A woman in Edinburgh holding a sign reading “F*** imperialism, abolish the monarchy” was charged with a breach of the peace while another woman in London was moved from the gates of Parliament while carrying a “Not my king” sign.

British police have faced criticism from activists and civil liberties groups over their treatment of people who have publicly challenged King Charles III‘s accession to the throne after the death of Queen Elizabeth II, raising free speech concerns.
