🇺🇸 In the Land of the Free, the Supreme Court declined to consider whether American Samoans are born full US citizens, NBC News reports. The decision means the court did not consider overturning the so-called “Insular Cases,” a series of long-criticized early 20th century Supreme Court rulings.
The challenge was brought by three Utah-based Samoans, who are considered US “nationals” at birth, but not citizens. The challengers’ lawyers in court papers say that American Samoans cannot run for president or serve in Congress, and are also barred from certain occupations.
US nationals can live and work anywhere within the United States and travel on a US passport, although the challengers’ lawyers point out that their passports include a statement saying “NOT A UNITED STATES CITIZEN.”

📹 On Monday, Russian Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin and UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Martin Griffiths held a meeting to discuss the details of the so-called “food deal.”
The two parties noted that the possibility of extending the export of grain from Ukrainian ports in conjunction with the export of Russian agricultural products and fertilizers directly depends on the full implementation of all previously reached agreements on this matter.

🇺🇸 The Democrats have lost potential voters in recent weeks due to unending concerns about the economy and inflation, a new poll by NYT/Siena has found.
According to the survey, 49% percent of likely voters said they would vote for a Republican candidate on November 8, compared with 45% who would vote for a Democrat.
Despite the Democrats heavily leaning on abortion rights to rally voters, the poll data shows that concerns over the state of the economy far outweigh those about abortion, with 5% of likely voters saying abortion was the most important problem facing the country, compared to 26% citing the economy and 18% pointing to inflation.

🇺🇸🇵🇰"The US is confident of Pakistan's commitment and its ability to secure its nuclear assets," says the State Department, days after President Joe Biden called Pakistan "one of the most dangerous nations in the world."
"What I think is maybe one of the most dangerous nations in the world: Pakistan. Nuclear weapons without any cohesion," the 79-year-old US leader said last week.
Over the weekend, Islamabad summoned the US ambassador over Biden's remarks, while Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari said:
"As far as the question of the safety and security of Pakistan's nuclear assets are concerned, we meet all – each and every – international standard in accordance with the IAEA."

😷CDC: 3.3 million received updated COVID-19 boosters in the US last week
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that some 3.3 million Americans had received updated COVID-19 booster shots during the past week.
As of 12th October, 14.8 million Americans had received the shot in the first six weeks of the booster being available, just 6.9 percent of those aged 12 or older who are eligible, the CDC added.
The shots are being administered slower than last year when over 20 million people received their third shot in the first six weeks after COVID-19 boosters were initially authorized for the elderly and immunocompromised people.
Beginning this week, US health regulators authorized the use of Pfizer's and Moderna's Omicron-tailored COVID-19 booster shots for children as young as five years, which is expected to expand the government's autumn vaccination campaign.

🎙🚫Turkey adopts law jailing those spreading 'disinformation'
Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan will enact a law making it unlawful for journalists or citizens to distribute "disinformation." Turkey's parliament approved the new law, which would jail journalists and social media users for up to three years for spreading "disinformation."
The bill was quickly approved by members of parliament from Erdogan's ruling AK Party (AKP) and its nationalist allies MHP, who form a majority in parliament. The new law states that those who spread false information online about Turkey's security and "create fear and disturb public order" will face a prison sentence of one to three years.
European observers have noted that the new law has no definition of "false or misleading information," allowing for yet another crackdown on dissent in Turkey, a country of 85 million.

🇬🇧UK Prime Minister Truss says 'sorry' for mistakes, but 'I'm sticking around.'
Prime Minister Liz Truss apologized for making mistakes after the new chancellor Jeremy Hunt junked almost all of her tax-cutting plans to stabilize market turmoil.
"I am sorry for those mistakes, but I fixed those mistakes. I appointed a new chancellor, and we have restored economic stability and fiscal discipline," she told broadcasters. She added that her month-old premiership "hasn't been perfect," but she had "fixed" mistakes.
Finance Minister Jeremy Hunt, appointed on Friday after Truss dismissed her close ally Kwasi Kwarteng, jettisoned the remaining significant planks of her tax-cutting agenda on Monday, including scaling back her vast energy support scheme. Ms. Truss became PM after winning the Tory leadership contest on the back of promises to dramatically cut taxes and upend the status quo in the Treasury.

▪️US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's husband sold call options in chipmakers Micron Technology (MU.O) and Nvidia (NVDA.O) for a loss of under $1 million, according to a new transparency filing.
In a periodic transaction report dated Friday, the senior Democrat disclosed that her husband, financier Paul Pelosi, lost $392,575 in the sale of Micron call options he had purchased in December 2021. The report also showed he sold Nvidia call options bought in July 2021 for a loss of $361,476.
A 2012 law makes it illegal for lawmakers to use information from their work in Congress for personal gain. The law requires them to disclose stock transactions by themselves or family members within 45 days. Senior House Democrats have yet to allow a vote on legislation restricting members of Congress and other government officials from trading stocks.
