🐓🐓A near-record number of U.S. chickens and turkeys have been killed by an avian flu outbreak this year. More than 47 million birds have died due to infections and being culled.
The outbreak has led to export bans, lowered egg, and turkey production, and contributed to record prices of staples ahead of the U.S. holiday season. In 2015, 50.5 million birds died in the worst animal-health crisis in U.S. history.
Rosemary Sifford, chief veterinary officer for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, said farmers are dealing with a subtype of the H5N1 strain of the virus that was able to survive over the summer when rising temperatures usually reduce the outbreaks.
Sifford said officials are finding the subtype in a broader range of wild birds, such as ducks, which also infects birds over a longer period. The U.S. is monitoring arriving wild birds for avian flu in four migration paths, known as flyways, instead of the two, and it will continue into next year.

🤳Chinese-owned social media company TikTok, seeking to develop a data center in Ireland, twice wrote to the Irish government seeking a meeting to discuss the level of security of the country's energy supplies.
During the proposed meeting, TikTok said it hoped to discuss "energy security in the context of gas supply and gas as a backup in data center operations," she wrote. Tim Tok also wanted to discuss the Commission for Regulation of utility guidance for new data centers, following concerns over the large amounts of energy used by the centers.
Meanwhile, TikTok has signed a lease on a six-story riverfront office building in Dublin's Docklands. Earlier, TikTok said it would add 1,000 new jobs in Ireland, bringing its total employees to 3,000. TikTok is also building a data center in Dublin, which is expected to open next year.

🦠Children's hospitals across the US see an increase in RSV cases. The highly contagious but rarely deadly respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, is rising nationwide. For most, it's similar to the common cold.
"For the young and particularly premature babies, it can lead to some lower respiratory infections, which can cause wheezing, difficulty breathing, and in rare cases, the babies need oxygen and have to be hospitalized," said pediatrician Dr. Richard Ohnmacht.
The virus encounters a highly vulnerable population of babies and children sheltered from common bugs during the pandemic lockdowns. Since the virus thrives typically during winter, doctors anticipate it may only worsen. RSV has been around for about 40 years, but hospitals see a spike in cases earlier than usual. Doctors said frequent hand washing and keeping kids at home when sick are two important ways to help.

🇳🇮The Biden administration is intensifying pressure on President Daniel Ortega’s authoritarian rule in Nicaragua, threatening a ban on Americans from doing business in the nation’s gold industry, raising the possibility of trade restrictions, and stripping the U.S. visas of some 500 government insiders.
The actions, stemming from an executive order signed by President Joe Biden on Monday, are the latest and perhaps most aggressive attempt by the U.S. to hold the former Sandinista guerrilla leader accountable for his continued attacks on human rights and democracy in the Central American country.
Previous sanctions have focused on Ortega, his wife, and vice president, Rosario Murillo, and members of their family and inner circle. But none of those moves have loosened Ortega’s grip on power. The latest target by Ortega’s government: is the Roman Catholic Church. In August, security raided the residence of a bishop, detaining him and several other clergies.

🛢 The world is in the middle of "the first truly global energy crisis", Fatih Birol, the head of the International Energy Agency, says
The situation has arisen because markets for liquefied natural gas (LNG) have been squeezed and major oil producers have cut supply.
Rising imports of LNG to Europe during the Ukrainian crisis and a potential rebound in Chinese demand for the fuel will tighten the market as only 20Bln cubic meters of LNG capacity will come to market next year, Birol said.
He added that the recent decision by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and its allies - known as OPEC+ - to cut output by 2 million barrels per day is "risky" and "really unfortunate".
