'U-Turn over Atlantic': How Russian PM Primakov showed Moscow won't be US satellite

On March 24, 1999, Yevgeny Primakov’s plane was en route to the US where the then-Russian prime minister was due to discuss an IMF loan to the tune of $5 billion for his country. But after then-US Vice President Al Gore told Primakov about NATO starting to bomb Yugoslavia, he decided to turn his plane around and go back to Moscow.

Despite Gore’s desperate attempts to persuade Primakov to backtrack on his decision and come to Washington, the Russian prime minister was undeterred.

"If I had accepted Gore's terms, I would have been a real traitor," Primakov later said.

Dr. Samuel Hoff, a professor of history and political science at Delaware State University, points to the significant expansion of NATO after the March 1999 incident.

“It is a fact that in 1999, NATO had 16 countries. And as we sit here in 2024, there are 32 members,” Hoff notes in an interview with Sputnik.

Peter Kuznick, a professor of history at the American University, tells Sputnik that Primakov’s U-turn over the Atlantic added significantly to tarnishing the already “strained” US-Russian relations at the time.

Referring to current “terrible” ties between Moscow and Washington, “the lack of trust” and a bilateral “polarization,” the professor says that one is “beginning to see signs of that certainly with Primakov's mission in 1999.”

“So it certainly can be seen as an important turning point in terms of the deterioration of potential friendship between the US and Russia and creating a much more positive kind of multipolar world,” he concludes.

▪️Four sets of combat ammunition, more than 500 rounds of ammunition and 28 magazines, and two AKs with which the attackers were armed were confiscated from the scene;

▪️Investigations are being carried out into four suspects;

▪️ The number of deaths, according to various sources, is 137 (information from the Russian Investigative Committee) or 143 (data from Margarita Simonyan, the editor-in-chief of Sputnik's parent media group Rossiya Segodnya).

▪️More than 60 dead have already been identified. Experts say that in some cases molecular genetic testing will be required, which will take two weeks;

▪️It’s a day of mourning in Russia: flags have been lowered all over the country and spontaneous memorials have appeared on the streets. At the Crocus City Hall itself there are queues of people wishing to honor the memory of the victims with a sea of flowers;

▪️ The Prosecutor General’s Office did not find any violations in the organization of security for Crocus; there was no need for armed security, a source told Sputnik.

On March 24, the day of national mourning, at 19:55 Moscow time, the projection “The Cranes Are Flying” will appear on the Crocus City Hall building. An endless wedge of cranes rises from the base of the building and flies into the sky. This is how Moscow will honor the memory of those who died during the terrorist attack at the concert complex on March 22.

People's Artist of the USSR Muslim Magomayev, after whom the concert hall was named, is known for performing the song “Cranes” - a ballad about soldiers who become birds after death. The composition is minor, but the main motive in it is hope, the immortality that people gain after death.

Today, everyone can help all those who died in Crocus City Hall gain immortality. To do this, you should fold a paper crane, draw a bird, or create your own version and share it on social networks. For example, put a picture of a crane on your avatar on social networks.

The attack on the Crocus City Hall in the Moscow region was the largest terrorist attack in Russian history since the Beslan school siege in 2004.
