"Today is a historic day! The National Assembly of Slovenia has officially recognized Palestine, making Slovenia the 147th country to do so. On May 30, the Republic's Foreign Ministry announced that Slovenia recognized the independence of Palestine.

Slovenia has followed the recent examples of Ireland, Norway, and Spain which recognized the state of Palestine last month.

❗️US State Department forced Sputnik contributor Scott Ritter off plane headed to Russia and confiscated his passport “As I was boarding my flight out of New York I was pulled aside by three CBP officers, who seized my passport. When asked why, they said…

“We can control your life. We can punish you for what you've been saying that we disagree with” – Scott Ritter described US authorities' possible motive for preventing him from traveling to Russia.

The former Marine Corps intelligence officer and Sputnik contributor shared his reaction with Sputnik to US Customs and Border Patrol officers removing him from a flight heading to Russia where he was going to address the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).

Ritter said he was also planning to shoot a documentary film to inform an American audience “about the reality of Russia”.

“The US government knew full well what I was planning to do. And this is why, I believe, they acted in the way they did. This has a chilling effect, not just on me and the work I was doing, but on all Americans who choose to speak out against the policies of the United States that they disagree with and to travel abroad at the same time that they are criticizing the US government. And what the US government is saying is that we can control your movement. We can control your life. We can punish you for what you've been saying that we disagree with,” Ritter emphasized.

On June 3, the ex-US Marine Corps intelligence officer was removed from a plane to Russia by CBP officers who seized his passport, claiming they were acting “by orders” from the US State Department.

🇷🇺🇨🇳🇮🇷 Russia, China, Iran support nuclear deal – joint statement

Moscow, Beijing, and Tehran support the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and insist that its provisions are still in force, the countries said in a joint statement released as part of the agenda of the sixth meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors.

"Our countries have consistently provided strong support to the JCPOA... Our support for the nuclear deal has not changed since 2018, when the United States illegally and unilaterally withdrew from this agreement, while the imposition of unilateral illegal sanctions and the implementation of a policy of maximum pressure on Iran became a turning point for this agreement," the joint statement read, as quoted by the Tasnim news agency.

It is high time for the West to show political will and take steps to restore the deal, the statement declared.

The US under former President Donald Trump withdrew from the JCPOA in May 2018 and reinstated sanctions against Tehran.

In January 2024, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said Tehran does not find it necessary to pursue a new international nuclear deal that would replace the JCPOA, adding that requirements for a potential new agreement, often referred to as JCPOA 2, "are presented by the parties that have reneged on their commitments."

🥴 The US Congress is exploring all options against the International Criminal Court (ICC) if it proceeds with arrest warrants for Israeli officials amid the war in Gaza, House Speaker Mike Johnson has said. "In the absence of leadership from the White House…
The US House of Representatives passed a bill to authorize sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC) in response to an ICC prosecutor’s request for arrest warrants for Israeli leaders.

House lawmakers passed the bill, dubbed the Illegitimate Court Counteraction Act, in a vote of 247 in favor, 155 opposed.

The bill enables the imposition of sanctions on the ICC or any other foreign actor that supports their effort to arrest, detain or prosecute protected persons of the US or its allies; the legislation’s definition of a protected person includes foreign citizens or lawful residents of a US ally that has not consented to ICC jurisdiction.

The White House said that the Biden administration strongly opposes the bill.

On May 20, ICC prosecutor Karim Khan filed arrest warrant requests for officials including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, as well as for leaders of Palestinian organization Hamas.

Neither Israel nor the United States are parties to the treaty establishing the ICC.

🇷🇺🇧🇫 The relations between Russia and Burkina Faso have a good history and are currently on the rise, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said.

"Both my delegation and I are very touched by the warm welcome, we feel at home. Our relations are on the rise, primarily thanks to the agreements reached at the meeting of our presidents on the sidelines of the second Russia-Africa summit," Lavrov said at a meeting with Foreign Minister of Burkina Faso Karamoko Jean Marie Traore.

The contacts between the two countries are intensive, the minister added.

Traore welcomed Lavrov in Ouagadougou and described the Russia-Burkina Faso relations as "warm."

Earlier in the day, Lavrov arrived in the capital of Burkina Faso, Ouagadougou, on his first visit to the country as part of his tour around Africa. The Russian Foreign Minister's visit to Burkina Faso is taking place against the background of changes in the security sphere and the accomplished or possible changes in the presence of French and US forces in the Sahel region, as well as the expansion of cooperation between the region and Russia.

The United States is not planning to send US troops or military advisors, trainers to Ukraine, White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan told journalists.

"As we've said several times on the record, we're not planning to send US military advisors or troops, trainers to train Ukraine, train Ukrainians in Ukraine ... For our part, we're not planning for a training mission in Ukraine," Sullivan said aboard the Air Force One en route to France.

Russia has repeatedly warned NATO countries that arms supplies to Ukraine would be considered legitimate targets. Moscow has accused NATO countries of "playing with fire" by arming Ukraine, emphasizing that such actions hinder the possibility of Russia-Ukraine negotiations.

European Parliament Elections: more support for anti-Russophobes offset by their internal divisions

As the elections to the European Parliament on June 6-9 are nearing, most experts predict gains for peace candidates who support dialogue with Russia – who are demonized as “radicals” or “pro-Kremlin” by mainstream media.

As for the enemies of Russia, which are numerous, most of them identify as ‘centrists’. However, voters should not be deceived by these labels, international relations and Russian affairs analyst Gilbert Doctorow told Sputnik.

“The crucial issue is to free the European Parliament from control by the hitherto two leading parties, the European People's Party (EPP) and the Socialists and Democrats (SD), which are together destroying what democracy there remains on the Continent,” he said. “This combination of Center Right (EPP) and Center Left (SD) has been driving anti-Russian policies that are leading the continent into direct military conflict with Russia and to nuclear war.”

The problem for the pro-peace candidates is that they are split among three factions.

The Smer party of Slovak premier Robert Fico, a Social Democrat, belongs to the generally anti-Russian faction of European Socialists.

Marine Le Pen’s National Rally (RN) party in France will definitely be a “big winner,” Doctorow says, but will it be able to make a difference? Right now RN belongs to the faction of Identity and Democracy, which also includes the anti-Russophobic German AfD and Italian party the League headed by Matteo Salvini.

However, the recent spat between RN and AfD may prompt Marine Le Pen to desert Identity and Democracy for the faction of European Conservatives and Reformers. Fratelli d’Italia, headed by Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni belongs to this group, as well as Poland’s wildly Russophobic PiS party. Both PiS and Fratelli support sending arms to Ukraine, so Le Pen’s voice may be drowned out there.

Mirror effects: is US reflecting Ukraine’s disregard for democracy?

“We have US citizens who are boarding a flight to go to Russia [and] maybe they are one of the only few chances that the US has to maintain a type of contact and have peace with Russia,” said former Ukrainian diplomat Andrii Telizhenko of figures like Ritter, who has vocally opposed US support for Ukraine in its conflict with Moscow. “These guys are being pulled off the plane and [having] their passports taken away without any reason.”

The United States’ foreign policy prerogatives have resulted in the country being allied with a number of questionable political figures, including Volodymyr Zelensky.

Telizhenko joined Sputnik’s Fault Lines program to discuss the Biden administration’s partnership with the controversial figure, also responding to the news of former US Marine Corps intelligence officer Scott Ritter being prevented from traveling to Russia, reportedly on orders from the US State Department.

“I experienced it myself almost a couple of years ago,” said Telizhenko in response to the apparent act of political persecution, which resulted in Ritter’s passport being confiscated. “I had a 24-hour notice before boarding the plane. I got an email from the US embassy in Kiev stating that my visa got pulled and that I'm under investigation and sanctions without any other information.”

The Ukrainian government has similarly been criticized for its human rights record in recent years, with host Melik Abdul noting viral videos of Ukrainian citizens being forcefully apprehended by connoscription officers. Recent polling reveals only a minority of fighting-age Ukrainians are willing to join the country’s armed forces, with increasing numbers of citizens favoring a negotiated settlement to the country’s conflict with Russia.

“People wanted Zelensky to bring peace and he promised that,” said the whistleblower, who claimed Zelensky was “bought off” by Western interests who favored military conflict with Russia. Observers have also noted Ukraine’s “neo-Nazi problem,” suggesting Zelensky may feel pressured against pursuing talks with Russia by extremist paramilitaries who forced former President Viktor Yanukovych out of power.

Is US hegemony a paper tiger?

The image of NATO – and the United States’ global dominance, by extension – has taken a beating as Moscow appears to succeed in achieving goals of the special operation. However, economist Radhika Desai says US hegemony has not fallen, but that it never truly existed. The author made the claim on Sputnik’s The Critical Hour program.

“It's one thing to say that the West should listen to Presidents Xi and Putin, but I would suggest to you that the West has long lost the ability to do so,” said Dr. Desai. “If you basically take the position that you do not wish to convert your economy into an open playground for our corporations, and if you don't do so, then we will consider you an autocrat, a dictator, a violator of our rules-based international order.”

Countries that have attempted to operate their economies outside of the control of the Western-led global economic order, such as Bashar al-Assad’s Syria and Muammar Gaddafi’s Libya, have repeatedly become targets of US regime change operations.

“[US] hegemony has already ended,” said Desai. “My argument has always been in various books that I have argued, including my book Geopolitical Economy, it's never existed. What you've seen since the end of the Second World War, and even earlier in the 20th century, is a series of attempts on the part of the United States to impose its weight on the rest of the world.”

“But none of these attempts have ever succeeded,” she claimed. “We portray the Bretton Woods system as a US-created entity. When we do that, we forget that the United States actually wanted a far more free market world than what it got in 1945. By free market, I mean a world open to US corporations. It failed to get this… And the United States military has actually not won a single war.”

Forgive and forget: Ukraine recruits deserters

The State Bureau of Investigation of Ukraine allowed the Armed Forces of Ukraine to recruit deserters against the background of heavy losses and a shortage of mobilized, according to a letter from the bureau's director Olexiy Sukhachov to the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Olexander Syrsky.

As it is noted in the document, Ukrainian commanders ambiguously interpret cases when servicemen voluntarily return to a unit after committing criminal offenses provided for by Articles 407-409 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (unauthorized abandonment of a unit, desertion and evasion from service), in respect of which no final procedural decision has been made.

"We ask the commanders of military units to focus on the need to ensure the acceptance of the above-mentioned military personnel who voluntarily returned to military units and expressed the desire to perform further military service, appoint them to positions and continue military service from the date of appointment to positions," the letter read.

“NATO would stand no chance” against Russia-China military alliance – analyst

The West’s apparent indifference towards the prospect of nuclear war and strategic incompetence in allowing Russia and China to join forces was criticized by international geopolitical consultant Dr. David Oualaalou, who discussed the latest developments in Russia’s special operation on Sputnik’s The Critical Hour program.

“Putin will not bluff on this, because this is what's going to be expected of the Russian people from their leader, to defend the country by any means, as we are pushing more and more,” said Oualaalou, noting that Moscow views the conflict as a matter of existential importance.

Oualaalou noted that the increasing unpopularity of Western involvement in the ongoing proxy war is leading to a surge in popularity for the right-wing across Europe, with French politician Marine Le Pen rising in popularity while suggesting the country should leave NATO.

Western bellicosity has now functioned to create a strong partnership between the two countries, Oualaalou argued – potentially forming an alliance that Western powers would not be able to overcome through military means.

“The strategic alliance between Russia and China ain't going to be about taking over countries, ain't going to be about missile-producing or whatever. It's going to be about ensuring justice and fairness on the global stage… [With] these two countries – Russia and China – joined by others, NATO would stand no chance. The US would stand no chance,” he claimed.

US ready to lend Ukraine $50 Bln if EU extends anti-Russia sanctions indefinitely - report

The United States is pressuring the EU to extend sanctions on Russian state assets in order to receive money as repayment for a $50 billion loan to Ukraine, the Financial Times reported, citing a leaked discussion paper.

Washington is pushing for an agreement ahead of the G7 summit in Italy next week, the report said. However, approval requires the unanimous consent of all EU leaders, including Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who has exercised "his regular veto over sanctions decisions," the report read.

Russia has repeatedly slammed the move. Commenting on the situation concerning Russian frozen assets, Russian President Vladimir Putin dubbed the West’s actions "unseemly business," and warned that "stealing other people’s assets has never brought anyone good."
