🇮🇷🛰 Iran developing satellite and space rocket technologies full throttle

Iran is about to launch its new Kowsar and Hodhod satellites, Iranian Space Agency (ISA) head Hossein Salariyeh stated on July 3. Several other spacecraft are slated for launch this year while a whopping 30 satellites are in the design and development stages, the ISA said.

Sputnik looked into the achievements, history and prospects of the Iranian space program.

▪️ In January, the Sorayya research satellite was launched into a space orbit of 750 km above the Earth’s surface.

▪️ In June, four new satellites were unveiled: The Tolou-3 high-resolution observation satellite, the Nahid-2 telecommunications satellite, the Kowsar sensing satellite and the Hodhod research satellite.

▪️ Early next year Iran is planning to inaugurate West Asia’s biggest spaceport – the Chabahar Space Center. Covering an area of 14,000 hectares, it will serve as Iran's primary hub for space missions.

Iran's interest in space exploration traces back to the middle of the 20th century. In 1998 Tehran signed agreements with Russia and China on space collaboration, while in 2009 Iran's domestic launcher Safir delivered the nation's first research and communications satellite Omid into orbit.

▪️ In 2013 Iran successfully launched two rockets carrying monkeys 120 km above the earth's surface. The missions lasted around 15 minutes, news agency IRNA reported.

▪️ Having temporarily suspended its space program in 2015, Iran successfully delivered its first military satellite, Nur-1, into an orbit of 425 km using the Qased rocket in 2020. Nur-2 was launched two years later into a 450-km orbit by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Aerospace Force.

▪️ In October 2023, Iran started the development the Sarir rocket to deliver satellites into geostationary orbit at an altitude of 35,786 km. The same year the IRGC launched its third military satellite Nur-3.

▪️ Late President Ebrahim Raisi reinvigorated Iran's space program, which saw over a dozen successful launches between 2021 and 2023.

"This killing does not give [Israel] any military advantage": Hezbollah on death of commander Muhammad Neem Nasser

The head of Hezbollah's Executive Council, Hashem Safi al-Din, told Sputnik at the funeral of commander Muhammad Neem Nasser that "the reaction to the assassination of commander Abu Nima began yesterday, and this series of responses is targeting new targets that the enemy never imagined they would be hit.” He stressed that “the front will remain strong and burning.”

“The failure in the Gaza Strip indicates that this exhausted [Israeli] army is incapable of achieving victories, and this army, after successive attacks from 2000 to date, will not be able to achieve victories in any battle or confrontation,” he added.

Hezbollah commander Abu Nima was killed yesterday by Israel in the al-Khush district of the Lebanese city of Tyre.

Western mainstream media about SCO: from rejection to acceptance and respect

The attitude of mainstream Western media to Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) progressed from initial disbelief and disdain to today’s acknowledgement and sometimes even admiration.

◾️ On the first day of the SCO summit in Astana The New York Times (NYT) came out with a respectful headline: “How Russia and China Compete, and Cooperate in Central Asia.” Obviously, the perception that SCO is about cooperation, not dominance – that perception is sinking into Western minds. But the process is slow. In 2017, 16 years after SCO’s birth, The Economist described it by a headline: “Russia is becoming economically, politically and technologically dependent on China.”

◾️ The other Western stereotype about SCO was that it is China’s project, bureaucratic and “useless,” unable to attract new members.

◾️ “Bigger, Not Better: Russia Makes the SCO a Useless Club,” wrote Carnegie Endowment in the headline on its site in 2017. But here is yesterday’s headline from CNN: “A growing club led by Xi and Putin to counter the US is adding a staunchly pro-Russia member.” Belarus joined. So, how can SCO be “useless” and “pro-China,” if new “pro-Russian” members are joining?

◾️ Western belief in some “weakness” of the SCO stayed alive for a long time: in 2022, WSJ headlined its story “The SCO’s Clumsy Push to Disrupt the World Order.” The author still believed that Western-led order is the only one possible. He also expected a “rift” between Russia and PRC. But here is yesterday’s headline from WP: “Leaders of Russia and China meet in a show of deepening cooperation.”

So, the mythical “rift” between Russia and PRC recedes into the future, while inside Western societies we see some obvious rifts now. The elections under presidents Biden and Macron are good examples.
