Radio station WURD fired a host who interviewed Biden using questions prepared by the president's campaign team.

The station's statement called the act a violation of the principle of independence and accountability solely to one's audience.

WURD stressed that Andrea Lawful-Sanders negotiated the interview and organized it independently - "without management's knowledge, consultation or interaction."

Israel allegedly deliberately killed own citizens on October 7 – report

A report in the Israeli newspaper Haaretz has claimed the IDF invoked the controversial Hannibal directive during Hamas’ October 7 attack last year, deliberately killing Israelis to prevent them from being taken hostage by Palestinian fighters.

“Documents and testimonies obtained by Haaretz reveal the Hannibal operational order, which directs the use of force to prevent soldiers being taken into captivity, was employed at three army facilities infiltrated by Hamas, potentially endangering civilians as well,” read an article in the liberal paper’s Sunday edition.

“‘Not a single vehicle can return to Gaza’ was the order,” writes journalist Yaniv Kubovich. “It was entirely clear what that message meant, and what the fate of some of the kidnapped people would be.”

Highly controversial within and outside of Israel, the so-called Hannibal directive was devised in response to the threat of armed groups gaining leverage over the Israeli state through the taking of hostages. Palestinian forces took several Israelis captive during the 1970s and 80s, successfully negotiating the release of Palestinian prisoners in return.

The allegations add to claims Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has deliberately placed Israeli citizens in harm’s way in order to pursue the Likud party’s vision of territorial maximalism. The response to Hamas’ October 7 attack was reportedly delayed for hours because Netanyahu had redeployed soldiers to support Jewish settlers in the occupied West Bank.

‘Blitz primary’ proposed as Democratic insiders still dissatisfied with Biden

Two Democratic insiders have proposed a novel idea to address the “malaise and crisis” within the party amid questions over US President Joe Biden’s age and mental acuity.

“We can limp to shameful, avoidable democracy-ending defeat,” say donor Ted Dintersmith and law professor Rosa Brooks, articulating concerns held by many in the party, “or Democrats can make this Our Finest Hour… We need to act. Now.”

The figures proposed a whirlwind “blitz primary” to rapidly choose a replacement for the elderly party leader. The plan suggests Democratic Party leaders could choose six candidates, who would run brief “positive-only” campaigns putting forward their case for why they should be the party’s nominee.

Weekly events would be held where the candidates put forward their ideas and vision, moderated by celebrities like Oprah Winfrey, Taylor Smith and Michelle Obama in order to stir voter interest. After one month’s time the party leaders would vote to select a ticket from the group of contenders, making the decision before the start of the Democratic National Convention in August.

Observers suggest the idea is unlikely to gain traction as it would require the blessing of Biden, who has insisted he will continue his candidacy unless instructed otherwise by God himself. It would also require Kamala Harris to surrender her assumed right to top the ticket as the current Vice President. What the plan has going for it, in the likely view of Democratic Party figures, is that it avoids the pesky issue of having to put the question to actual voters.

🇷🇺🇮🇳 Putin-Modi talks in Moscow: What to expect

Indian PM Narendra Modi is visiting Moscow on July 8-9 to co-chair the 22nd Russia-India Annual Summit with President Vladimir Putin.

Modi will attend a private dinner hosted by Putin on Monday afternoon. On Tuesday, Modi will meet with the Indian community in Moscow; lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Kremlin; and visit an exhibition venue. Core to the visit will be bilateral talks in “restricted” and broader, delegation-level format.

The upcoming talks should be viewed from the lens of an extremely promising bilateral context, which “allows India and Russia to strengthen their strategic autonomy amid global geopolitical changes”, Dr. Raj Kumar Sharma, a senior research fellow at NatStrat, a New Delhi-based think tank, tells Sputnik. Russia is a country that “remains very important for India's engagement in Eurasia,” alongside the overarching bilateral strategic relationship of the sides, he adds.

Putin-Modi talks to focus on:

🔸Defense and energy security amid regional and global developments

🔸Ties within groups like BRICS, Shanghai Cooperation Organization, East Asia Summit (EAS), UN.

🔸Bilateral trade, which has surged to $65 billion, predominantly due to energy cooperation;

🔸Sustainable payment mechanisms amid de-dollarization drive

🔸Investment in energy, banking, railways and steel

🔸Nuclear energy amid work on units of Kudankulam NPP built in collaboration with Russia

🔸Russia-India Reciprocal Exchange of Logistics Agreement (RELOS), designed to boost military cooperation; streamline military logistics; expand India’s maritime outreach (including to the Arctic), balance India's logistics agreements with Quad countries; and strengthen Russia’s Indo-Pacific presence

🔸Transport projects like International North-South Transport Corridor and Chennai-Vladivostok Maritime Corridor

🔸Science & tech, education, and culture. Russia and India plan mutual visa-free travel by end of 2024.

New French governing coalition will likely be ‘fragile’ – analyst

The outcome of the second round of French parliamentary elections will create a serious governance problem. The future governing coalition will likely be fragile and society will be characterized by greater political polarization, chairman of Rome-based think tank Vision and Global Trends Tiberio Graziani told Sputnik.

“Economic problems will worsen. It will be three years of political crisis,” he said.

France is already going through a political crisis, both internally and within Europe. The elections show that the country is facing political, economic and social crises. The same can be said about other European nations, like Germany, the expert added.

Jean-Luc Melanchon's left-wing New Popular Front coalition won the parliamentary elections, securing 182 seats (out of 577) in the French parliament. President Emmanuel Macron's bloc gained 168 seats. Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardelle’s National Rally got 143 parliamentary seats.

US pulls out military from Niger's capital Niamey

The US has withdrawn its military personnel from Niger's Air Base 101 near the airport in the capital, Niamey. The next step will be to withdraw troops from a larger drone base near the city of Agadez by September 15.

About 950 US military personnel were stationed in Niger, and 766 of them have already left the country.

In March, the Nigerian government canceled a military cooperation agreement with the United States.

The following month, 100 Russian military instructors arrived in the African country.

In May, Russian military specialists entered the US base in Niger and Russian military equipment arrived in the country.

'Reliable transport route for entire Eurasia': Russia marks 50th anniversary of the Baikal-Amur Mainline

Today marks the 50th anniversary since the construction of the Baikal-Amur Mainline (BAM) was launched. The celebration takes place in Tynda, the “capital” junction of the mainline.

BAM veterans, train operators and railway workers are all in attendance to witness a symbolic connection of the relay trains from Irkutsk and Khabarovsk.

President Putin gave a special message to the participants of the exciting event.

“The BAM helped to open the domestic economy for promising, fast-growing markets in the Asia-Pacific region and provided a reliable transport route for the entire Eurasia,” he said.

Putin also noted that half a century ago, the legendary construction site brought together hundreds of thousands of people to tackle national tasks.
