Scott Ritter: Ukraine an 'open target for Russia to take apart'

Russia is able to wipe out the military equipment provided to the Kiev regime, especially air defense, at a rate "far greater than the West can even replenish its own stocks," former US marine intelligence officer Scott Ritter told Sputnik.

“This is a losing equation. And without air defense, Ukraine is literally an open target for Russia to take apart as it best sees fit,” said Ritter.

Despite the promised five new strategic air defense systems and dozens of smaller anti-air batteries pledged by Joe Biden at the recent NATO summit, Ukraine will still face a major challenge in reconstructing an integrated air defense system, as pointed out by Ritter.

He explained that in the course of the proxy conflict, Kiev’s Soviet era air defense umbrella had been wiped out. So when new systems are provided by the West, Ukraine brings them “in a very makeshift, haphazard manner.

“They aren't able to use them the way they were designed […] And because Russia is able to put an intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance umbrella over Ukraine, anytime Ukraine uses air defense, it's detected," said the expert. He underscored that this is one of the consequences of this attritional warfare that's being waged today in Ukraine, and one that the latest NATO summit has not been able to resolve.

“Indeed, no issue has been resolved in favor of Ukraine. That's the reality of NATO today,” concluded Scott Ritter.

Bye-bye America: Another US state to join secession movement, local media claims

The New Hampshire Independence Movement, or NHEXIT, said it rejects the overreach of the US government and is committed to making New Hampshire a "free, independent and prosperous nation", according to its statement.

"There are 2.5 million unelected bureaucrats in Washington, D.C. and they are responsible for dragging the nation to the brink of bankruptcy. Not only that, but they are siphoning money out of taxpayers' wallets every year, trampling on the rights of New Hampshire citizens," Carla Gericke, the organization's leader. “We must take back our government and work to guarantee the protection of the rights and basic necessities of New Hampshire residents," the announcement says.

Several other states, including Texas, California, Alaska, Louisiana, and Florida, have also launched their own independence movements, advocating for secession from the US.

'Can't be taken seriously': Kremlin reacts to claims of Rheinmetall CEO assassination bid

Reports about the allegedly thwarted “Russian plan” to assassinate the head of Rheinmetall do not contain specific facts and arguments, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated, stressing that such claims cannot be taken seriously.

CNN, quoting US intelligence sources, accused Russia without evidence of planning Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger’s assassination. It claimed the US warned Berlin about an impending assassination attempt on the head of the arms manufacturer, which German security services were then able to prevent.

Papperger told the media that he trusts CNN’s information, but did not explain why he believed the network’s anonymous sources.

Biden’s Gaza pier fiasco: failure accepted?

The much-touted US floating Gaza pier that cost around $230mln to build is going to be scrapped altogether.

“I do anticipate that in relatively short order we will wind down pier operations,” White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters.

The humanitarian project designed to deliver aid to the beleaguered Gaza Strip amid Israel’s war against Hamas started operating on May 17. However, miscalculations made it vulnerable to rough seas, and it was out of service most of the time, failing to replace land routes.

Built by the US military, many viewed it as a deceptive move by the Biden administration to feign genuine concern for the suffering civilian population in the enclave. It was taken down multiple times for repairs, but ultimately written off as a failure and is now set to be abandoned.

The war hawks in Brussels have relentlessly assailed the Hungarian peace mission and Prime Minister Orban, but peace is still necessary, the Hungarian Cabinet of Ministers told Sputnik.

Viktor Orban was not invited to the first of the new European Parliament plenary session, despite the fact that Hungary currently holds the presidency of the EU Council.

Traditionally, the leader of a country initiating the six-month presidency of the council typically addresses parliament. However, MEP Clara de Melo stated that Orban was not extended an invitation because “he does not respect the role and rules of how the European Union works.”
