US House Committee calls DHS' data on Trump’s assassination attempt ‘inadequate’

The US House Committee on Homeland Security issued a subpoena to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, demanding details on the Secret Service’s preparations for the rally that nearly took the life of former President Donald Trump.

Among the ordered documents are plans for security in Butler, Pennsylvania, and details of the agency’s immediate response after the shooting.

 “The Department of Homeland Security has failed to properly satisfy our requests for documents,” the House Committee Chairman Mark Green said in a release on Friday. “The piecemeal information it has provided over phone calls is woefully inadequate,” he added.

Russia captures new Ukrainian long-range drone

Russian specialists have managed to capture and examine a new Ukrainian kamikaze drone equipped with a jet engine and capable of gaining speed when approaching air defense and electronic warfare zones.

Studying the trophy will help counter a new UAV, said Dmitry Kuzyakin, general director of the Center for Complex Unmanned Solutions.

"We have managed to study the Ukrainian kamikaze drone. This is the enemy's fundamentally new design - the UAV is equipped with a jet engine, making it more expensive at a reduced flight range. There are also advantages [that we will study to] get crucial data on countering the new threat," he said.

"The enemy should not think that we are unaware of his next steps. The analysis of each of these 'birds' tells us much more about him than any agent or captured drone operator," Kuzyakin pointed out.

US Navy, Japan to receive nine Hawkeye Alert Aircraft – Pentagon

The US Navy has provided Northrop Grumman with almost $1.5 billion worth of contract extension, to build nine more E-2D Hawkeye maritime reconnaissance and early warning aircraft for the US and Japan, the Department of Defense announced in a press release.

The extended contract will purchase nine E-2D Advanced Hawkeye aircraft - four for the US Navy and five for Japan, the Pentagon stated. The request is scheduled to be completed in March 2029.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has repeatedly said that the increased militarization of Japan poses a threat to stability in the Asia-Pacific region.

JD Vance says Biden should resign presidency if he drops out of race

Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance wrote on X that if Democrats believe Biden doesn’t have the mental acuity to continue to run for re-election, it would be difficult to argue that he should remain president till the end of his term.

“If Joe Biden doesn't have the cognitive function to run for re-election, then he certainly doesn't have the cognitive function to remain as Commander-In-Chief. How can any Dem pushing him to drop out of the presidential race, argue in good faith that he should stay on as POTUS?” he wrote.

Discovery of drone surveillance by Trump's shooter reveals additional security lapses

Thomas Matthew Crooks, the shooter who tried to kill Donald Trump at the rally in Pennsylvania, managed to fly a drone for aerial footage of the site, a few hours before the assassination attempt, the WSJ reports, citing law-enforcement officials familiar with the matter.

Crooks had flown the drone on a programmed flight path several times earlier in the day on July 13, to scour the Butler Farm Show grounds ahead of the event, the officials said. The discovery has raised more serious concerns over the reliability of the security services, the outlet notes.

What else has been revealed?

▪️ The use of the drone was just one way in which authorities said Crooks had planned his attack. The perpetrator came to Trump's rally with a pair of homemade bombs designed for detonation with remote control.

▪️ The authorities also found primitive explosives and a vest with three 30-round magazines in Crooks' car. This suggests that he probably "wanted to cause greater carnage", according to the article.

▪️ Crooks had also ordered several packages labeled "hazardous materials" to be shipped to his home in the past month.

▪️ He also conducted online searches for Trump rally dates, and information on Biden and the Democratic National Convention.

Ukrainian soldiers unable to declare goodwill towards Russia due to persecution – POW

Andrei Bugayev served in a rear unit ordered to strengthen a combat brigade. His squad was trained for two weeks before being sent to the Kupyansk region and a hot spot near Volchansk.   

After coming under heavy fire and a drone attack, Bugayev and his comrades came under siege. The Ukrainian soldiers then decided to surrender.  

"We are given medical care and food. Everything is fine," confessed the soldier.  

Bugayev shared that many of his comrades could not declare their goodwill towards Russia openly due to fear of persecution.

German mercenary sentenced to death in Belarus

A German national who fought on the side of the Ukrainian Armed Forces has been sentenced to death in Belarus, Reuters reports, citing the German Foreign Ministry.

"Berlin is in intensive contact with authorities in Minsk over his fate," the publication states.

Although the ministry did not disclose the name of the sentenced individual, the article identifies him as Rico Krieger, charged with terrorism and mercenarism.

The man has been in custody since November 2023, the article mentions.

It is noted that the convicted individual was a member of the nationalist formation "Kastus Kalinouski Regiment," which is banned in Belarus, and includes some citizens of Belarus who have been fighting alongside Ukrainian forces since March 2022.

🇷🇺 Russian air defense forces shoot down Storm Shadow missile  

The Tor-M2 air defense system of the Zapad Battlegroup destroyed a Storm Shadow cruise missile on the Kupyansk section, the commander under the call sign ‘Pauk’ (lit. Spider) told reporters.

"Recently, we shot down an unmanned aerial vehicle of the Portuguese Tekever type, a reconnaissance drone of the Furia and Leleka types, a Storm Shadow cruise missile, and a HIMARS with extended range," he said. 

Pauk explained that the Storm Shadow flies along the usual trajectory of a cruise missile, making it a good target for Tor-M2. According to him, the missile was hit by the very first shot.

"The technical characteristics of the [Tor-M2] allow it. It has a 98% hit rate. Basically, the machine does everything, but the crew is also important," the commander noted.

Ukrainian drones deliberately target Russian fire truck

The Ukrainian Armed Forces released a video showing a kamikaze drone operator deliberately targeting a Russian fire truck, reported the regional office of the Russian Emergency Ministry in the DPR.

On July 17, Ukrainian drones attacked an emergency services vehicle responding to a fire in the Yasynuvata district of the DPR twice. Fortunately, the firefighters were not injured.
