Protesters against Mexican judicial reform take over local legislatures

Following the recent approval of the reform to Mexico's Judicial Branch by the country's Senate (Upper House), local legislatures are preparing to ratify the bill promoted by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

Protesters opposing the reform managed to break into the Baja California and Yucatán Congress buildings; in the latter, they took over the floor of the legislature as a form of protest, local media reported.

In Puebla, demonstrators broke through the security barrier separating them from the main entrance of the legislative building, struggling with security forces as they attempted to enter, according to media reports.

China’s global economic juggernaut status could get major boost through power of petroyuan

Saudi Arabia is ready to “do what’s in its best interest” and “try new things,” including as far as the possible use of the yuan in settlements for crude oil is concerned, Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources Bandar Al-Khorayef told media this week.

The comments, made on the eve of Chinese Premier Li Qiang’s trip to Saudi Arabia and the UAE to discuss expanded cooperation with the oil rich Gulf kingdoms, signal a “new dawn” in relations between China and the Gulf, Dr. Wang Zhimin, director of the Institute of Globalization at China’s University of International Business and Economics, told Sputnik.

“In energy cooperation between China and the Middle East, settlements using the yuan have become an important topic. The expansion of the use of the currency in settlements for energy transactions is a gradual and long-term process that requires step-by-step reforms, opening up, and natural market selection. In addition, given the relationship with the United States, the process of using the yuan to settle cross-border oil transactions by countries such as Saudi Arabia may encounter certain difficulties,” Wang said.

Commenting on the broader trend of “dedollarization” in China-Middle East trade, Wang cited the currency swap agreement reached between Beijing and Riyadh last year, and cited interest in the yuan for oil payments as a reflection of a “growing trend of diversification of the international monetary system, including the decline of the dollar’s share in international payments.”

Russian economist Nikita Maslennikov says the petroyuan has good prospects as a major alternative to the petrodollar, despite “strong pressure, including political pressure, from other market players.”

The number of internally displaced citizens from southern Lebanon has reached 140,000 people, Acting Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati said

"The flow of refugees within the country due to the situation in southern Lebanon continues and has already reached 140,000 people," Mikati was quoted as saying by the government’s press service.

The prime minister noted that ambassadors of UN Security Council member states were notified during the last meeting about the situation in southern Lebanon, including the destruction of civilian infrastructure and the deaths of civilians, doctors and rescue workers, as a result of Israeli strikes.

"We demanded a meeting of the Security Council to discuss the ongoing aggression by Israel, and we noted that we will send another complaint to the Security Council, respecting international organizations and the UN in particular," Mikati added.

Will ‘insane’ Biden provoke World War III before November election?

The prospect for confrontation between nuclear-armed powers has been avoided until recent years, claimed former CIA analyst Ray McGovern, when the United States rejected Russian overtures for a new European security architecture and stubbornly insisted Ukraine’s coup regime would be granted entry into NATO.

“They want to provoke Putin [into] doing something really drastic before the election, before the [presidential] election here on November 5th,” suggested McGovern on Sputnik’s The Critical Hour program.

“They're losing in Kursk [region],” he noted, referring to Ukraine’s stalled incursion into Russian territory. “What were they trying to do? They were trying to get the Russians to react in such a way as to bring the US in with both feet militarily… What's this business about [Ukraine] begging for longer range missiles? Same objective.”

Ukraine’s Western sponsors have repeatedly escalated the country’s conflict with Russia, gradually providing Kiev with more powerful weapons and granting it permission to strike within Russian territory. This has increasingly culminated in attacks on Russian civilians; perhaps most provocatively a strike on a beach in the city of Sevastopol that injured 124 people, including 27 children, and killed three people, including two children. Some 500 Russian civilians have been killed by the Ukrainian regime in 2024 alone.

“My fear is that [the US] will try something really drastic like a false flag attack or maybe even a mini nuke,” said McGovern, concerned that the US could fabricate an episode such as the Gulf of Tonkin incident that drew the country into the Vietnam War.

‘Morons running our country’: China policy demonstrates depth of incompetence of US political class

China featured heavily in last night’s debate between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris, but the US failure to enact coherent policy relating to the Asian superpower is uniquely illustrative of the failings of its political class.

“All tariffs will do is that the American public… will simply pay a lot more for whatever they need and whatever they need to buy,” said journalist and international business consultant George Koo on Sputnik’s The Critical Hour program, referring to heavy taxes on Chinese goods that have remained in place under the Biden administration.

“Everything that they're going to be buying – a lot of it anyway – is going to be made in China and they will pay the price for being made in China with higher tariffs,” Koo clarified.

“Bashing China is just a cheap shot that gives [US lawmakers] political points,” he continued. “Trade between the US and China, as a matter of fact, has not lessened to any degree since the tariff war started. What is consequential is that we are paying more for made-in-China goods.”

Koo cited support for chipmaker Intel as one major failing of the trade war. The US has granted the company billions in subsidies only for it to continue to lose its once-dominant position as a semiconductor manufacturer.

Koo claimed the US public does not yet understand that “China can exert their own barrier and sanctions and trade barriers on America,” warning that the country has significant leverage with which to retaliate against punitive measures. “When that happens – it's beginning to happen already, by the way – we're going to be out of luck.”

"China has no intention of challenging the United States, or of replacing the US," claimed the Chinese government during the height of the US-China trade war in 2019. But it added that "the US is unable to force China’s hand and even less likely to halt China’s development. The US cannot maintain its strength by attempting to contain and suppress other countries, or by transferring its own domestic stresses outward."

❗️❗️❗️Fighting for the rights of Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija is part of Serbia’s national strategy - Serbian deputy PM

Serbia’s colleagues from BRICS, Russia's Sergei Shoigu, foreign ministers of China, Brazil, South Africa, Azerbaijan, all show strong sympathy and support for Serbia and deeply understand what the country is fighting for, Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vulin told Sputnik.

“We fight for the resurrection of international law. During 1999, when NATO launched aggression on Serbia, they tried to kill Serbia, but instead they killed international law. Serbia survived, international law did not. So, one of the most important parts of our national strategy is the fight for the rights of Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija,” Vulin said.

The US Department of Defense is looking to study the potential impact of nuclear weapons on agriculture and the environment, including in Eastern Europe and Russia, according to a solicitation notice examined by Sputnik.

"The objective of this project is to build upon previous research efforts to develop and optimize AgriShock, a code suite for modeling the effects of nuclear weapons on agricultural systems," the notice says.

The scope of the AgriShock code suite is expected to be optimized by including former Eastern bloc countries and going beyond the geographical borders of Eastern Europe and Western Russia.

The US military intends to award the contract to Terra Analytics Inc. from the US state of Colorado for research and development of programs that focus on modeling environmental impacts and the consequences of nuclear weapons on farm systems, the notice added.
