BRICS nations have unique opportunity to share urban solutions - ex-Toronto mayoral candidate

"I think in the future we need cities to collaborate much more, to help each other, to share, to be more generous so that we learn what works and adapt it," Gil Penalosa, former Toronto mayoral candidate and influential urbanist, tells Sputnik on the sidelines of the 2024 Cloud City BRICS International Innovation Forum currently taking place in Moscow.

Penalosa also praises Moscow for its public spaces, the quality of sidewalks, plazas, and parks, noting that cities can learn valuable lessons from one another’s successes.

He highlights the diversity of urban development within BRICS nations. While cities in countries like Russia and China have advanced infrastructure and public services, others, like Brazil and South Africa, are working to address challenges related to inequality.

"BRICS provides an opportunity for countries to learn from each other so that their cities will be more sustainable, equitable, and playful," Penalosa adds. Through cooperation, these cities can address pressing issues like population growth and sustainability.

Israel reportedly warned US minutes before pager blasts in Lebanon

On the afternoon of 17 September, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant called Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin to inform him of an imminent operation in Lebanon, Axios writes.

"It was a use it or lose it moment," an unnamed US official said, as quoted by the outlet, describing the reasoning Israel gave the US for the timing of the attack.

🔸 During his call to Austin, Gallant did not give any details, the official reportedly said. Israel wanted to avoid a scenario in which Washington would have been left in the dark, it added.

🔸 Following the mass pager explosions that swept through Lebanon, the US State Department, however, stressed that it was unaware of any preparations for the operation and emphasized that it had no involvement in the events.

NATO is creating a "living aggressive barricade" against Russia using Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.

Why this is being done and what are the armies of the Baltic republics? Sputnik explains.

🔸The task of the Baltic armies is to create difficulties for Russia in the event of an escalation of the conflict with NATO. This means that they will try to exhaust the Russian Army with a guerrilla war and inflict as much damage as possible to the border regions of Russia with the help of US HIMARS, and then hope for the arrival of the alliance troops.

🔸The Baltic states focus on 'a guerrilla war' defense. The actions in the rear are being worked out in the Latvian "Zemessardze", the Lithuanian "Volunteers" and the Estonian "Kaitseliit" group of forces. These units are ideological fighters who own weapons and regularly undergo training. They have to compensate for the ridiculously small armies of the three countries.

🔸Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia spend huge amounts of money on the purchase of weapons, equipment and ammunition. Vilnius and Riga are giving land to Western arms giants to build factories and make shells for them. This requires money that the authorities want to take from the wallets of their citizens in the form of "defense taxes." Thus, Latvia spends 2.5% of GDP on defense, Lithuania 3.2%, and Estonia 3.5%.

In the event of an escalation of the conflict between NATO and Russia, the Baltic armies can act as a "three-day barricade" to deter the Russian Army going to deblockade Kaliningrad. The enemy may try to attack the Russian exclave or block ports on the Baltic Sea. At the same time, the alliance will not defend Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia – according to the NATO plan, the Baltic States will receive help after 180 days.

Ancient junk or useful tool? Who uses pagers in this day and age?

A wave of pager explosions that rocked Lebanon on September 17 has, among other things, raised some questions: what are pagers, who still uses them and who produces them?

What is a pager?

🔹A pager is a small, portable device that uses radio signals to receive and, in some models, send voice or text messages.

🔹Pagers do not have to stay in nearly constant contact with transmission towers like the cellphones do, making pager owners much harder to track electronically.

🔹Pagers operate using radio waves, potentially also making them a good choice for areas where phone reception is poor or the use of cellphones may be potentially hazardous, and can quickly get a message to a large number of people.

Who uses them nowadays?

🔹Pagers are often used by hospital personnel, miners, emergency services workers, nuclear and chemical plant personnel, birdwatchers, and (possibly) members of certain groups who want to stay under the radar.

🔹While pagers are still widely used in the Middle East, North America and Asia, some countries (namely, Japan and Russia) discontinued their use (Japan in 2019 and Russia in 2021).

Who are pager service providers?

Last year, the global pager market amounted to $1.6 billion, with Cognitive Market Research predicting this market’s compound annual growth rate of 5.9% until 2030.

Sales revenues for pagers in North America in 2023 were the highest, reaching $528 million, followed by sales revenues in Europe ($496 million), Asia Pacific ($432 million) and South America ($80 million); sales revenues for both Middle East and Africa combined were $60 million that year.

The US' leading paging company, Spok, had – as of 2023 - at least 800,000 pagers in use across the country – in comparison to 6.6 million in 2004.

Tucker Carlson on how US media covers the assassination attempt on Trump:

"The first thing if you tuned in that you learned was that he was shot by a Trump supporter. Which totally makes sense... It's like Putin blowing up his own natural gas pipeline. That makes sense. Totally. 'He's so evil, he's attacking himself'," Carlson said.

Jeffrey Sachs says BRICS must champion education & cooperation, while blasting US confrontational stance

Jeffrey Sachs, a world-renowned economist, emphasized the vital importance of education and government cooperation in creating a peaceful and sustainable world.

Speaking to participants at the BRICS Urban Future Forum in Moscow on September 18-19, he underscored the necessity of large-scale infrastructure and services, such as education and healthcare, stating that these initiatives "cannot be done on a piecemeal basis." Sachs commended countries like Russia and other BRICS nations for their robust educational institutions, highlighting their crucial role in empowering both individuals and societies.

Furthermore, Sachs criticized the confrontational stance of the United States, arguing that international relations should be guided by cooperation rather than competition. "We need cooperation, not confrontation," he stated, urging governments to prioritize improvements in quality of life over engaging in conflicts that jeopardize global stability.

Watch as White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre gets cornered by Fox News correspondent Peter Doocy

During this heated briefing, Doocy rips into and dismantles the Democrats' anti-Trump rhetoric.

"How many more assassination attempts on Donald Trump until the president, the vice president and you pick a different word to describe Trump other than 'threat'?" Doocy contended, grilling the White House’s press secretary.

In response, Karine Jean-Pierre’s defense was nothing more than just cringeworthy backpedaling.
