Israel-Lebanon escalation: here’s what happened overnight
▪️ Israel’s military launched a wave of attacks on southern Beirut during the night after warning residents living “near Hezbollah interests” to evacuate. Hundreds are reported to have fled the Lebanese capital’s Dahiyeh district – a densely populated civilian area.
▪️ Israeli fighter jets carried out air raids in the neighborhoods of al-Kafaat, Hadath, Laylaki, Choueifat, and Ghobeiry in Beirut’s southern suburbs, according to the news outlet Al Mayadeen.
▪️ The Israeli military has said the precision strikes targeted Hezbollah’s "central headquarters" and alleged weapons depots in underground complexes in the suburbs of the Lebanese capital. A series of seven explosions was heard in the southern suburbs of Beirut, a Sputnik correspondent reported.
▪️ Muhammad Ali Ismail, commander of Hezbollah’s missile unit in southern Lebanon, along with his deputy, Hussein Ahmad Ismail, were killed in the air strikes, the Israeli military’s Arabic spokesperson stated in a post on X.
▪️ Hezbollah has denied Israeli claims that weapons were stored in the bombed buildings.
▪️ Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and the head of the movement’s executive council, Hashem Safieddin, were not injured in the Israeli air strikes on Beirut, Tasnim News Agency reported.
▪️ As around 65 rockets were launched at Israel from Lebanon, a 68-year-old woman sustained injuries from shrapnel in the city of Safed, the IDF and local medics reported. According to the Israeli military, sirens sounded in the northern Israel’s Upper Galilee area after 10 rockets launched from southern Lebanon were detected.
▪️ Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian denounced Israel's air strikes as a "flagrant war crime" in a statement published by the country’s official IRNA news agency.
▪️ Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi alleged during a UN Security Council meeting that Israel had used US "bunker buster" bombs in its attacks on Beirut.

Obligations to investigate the egregious terrorist attack on the Nord Stream pipelines under international treaties are not being fulfilled despite Russia's repeated appeals, Russian FM spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told Sputnik.
Key statements on the issue by Zakharova:
▪️ Switzerland, where Nord Stream’s operating company is registered, has not even tried to investigate the attack, she stressed.
▪️ Germany, where the pipelines’ end point is located, has not reported a single positive result of the investigation into the terrorist attack.
▪️ Russia has formally filed pre-trial claims against Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Switzerland under a number of terrorism conventions in connection with the investigation into the Nord Stream terrorist attacks, and other countries that may have been involved in the attack are next in line, the spokeswoman noted.
▪️ Russia firmly intends to look to identify and bring to justice all perpetrators of the terrorist attacks on the pipelines, and the West's attempts to “sweep the case under the rug” will not be accepted, Zakharova said.
On Wednesday, German media stated that the operation to blow up the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines cost about $300,000 and was funded by private sources. According to reports, several people, mostly civilians, took part in the operation, organized by a former Ukrainian security service agent, Roman Chervynsky.

Netherlands transferring its 70s-vintage F-16s to Ukraine to ‘fight the Russians’: defense minister
Six Royal Netherlands Air Force F-16s made one final flyover over the country on Friday in a farewell flight before their formal retirement, with 24 of the jets ultimately expected to make their way to Ukraine to take part in the NATO proxy war against Russia. Eighteen others will be transferred to a training center in Romania.
Flying out of Volkel Air Base in the country’s south, the six jets proceeded at altitudes as low as 400 meters past the Leeuwarden, Woensdrecht, Gilze-Rijen and Eindhoven bases. One of the jets sported special 45h anniversary ‘Farewell Falcon’ markings on its tail.
Over the past three decades, the Netherlands actively used its F-16s in support of US wars of aggression across the globe, from Yugoslavia, Iraq and Afghanistan, to Libya, Mali and Syria.
Offloading its F-16s, the Dutch Air Force is left with Lockheed Martin F-35 fighters, bought from the US in 2013. Deliveries of the plane began in 2019.

Ex-British PM comes clean about ‘nutty’ secret plan to invade Holland during COVID-19 pandemic
Boris Johnson has confessed he nurtured a secret plan to send the British Army on a raid into Holland at the height of the coronavirus pandemic.
The former British prime minister spilled the beans in his new tell-all book Unleashed, excerpts of which are being released by UK media.
With global supplies dwindling, the EU had stowed five million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine at a warehouse in Leiden in March 2021.
After “futile” talks with EU chiefs to secure the release of the doses, Johnson mulled sending British special forces “to launch an aquatic raid” into the Netherlands to “take that which was legally ours.”
The clandestine operation would have involved using inflatable boats to navigate Dutch canals.
The plan was “certainly feasible,” his then-deputy chief of the defense staff, Lt Gen Doug Chalmers, told Johnson. But Chalmers pointed out that if detected, the UK would have some explaining to do as to “why we are effectively invading a longstanding NATO ally.”

As of April 2024, only 36 states required voters to present some form of identification in order to vote in the US presidential election on November 5. Of these states, 24 require identification containing a photograph. In the remaining states and Washington, DC, no form of ID is requested to vote. Accepted forms of ID vary, and can be state or federal government-issued driver’s licenses or passports, student IDs, as well as military, public assistance, and tribal cards. Some states allow voters to sign affidavits verifying their identities and proof of US citizenship if they do not have ID.
Why does voter ID remain a contentious issue in the US?
As the US presidential election draws nearer, the issue has been widely debated on social media. Many have noted that unlike the US, virtually all of Europe and almost all developed countries require in-person voters to provide photo IDs to vote. Tesla billionaire Elon Musk drew attention to the uptick in immigrant naturalizations under the Biden administration in a recent tweet, adding the caption: “They are importing voters.”
Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump has accused Biden of streamlining the path to US citizenship for political gain. Naturalized voters account for about 10% of the US electorate, according to the Pew Research Center. A National Partnership for New Americans poll this month showed that about 54% of respondents would vote for Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris.

Fresh revelations have reignited a row over pricey gifts that Sir Keir Starmer accepted from donors while in opposition.
The now-UK prime minister was given £16,000 ($21,400) worth of clothes by multimillionaire Labour Party donor Waheed Alli, which was declared as being “for the private office of the leader of the opposition,” The Guardian reported. Donations from the TV producer and fashion mogul reportedly comprised £10,000 ($13,371) in October 2023 and £6,000 ($8,022) in February 2024.
The donations will now be “re-categorized” as “donations in kind” of clothing, Starmer’s office said on Friday.
The disclosures, taken together with the £16,000 that had already been declared, bring the cost of the Labour peer’s gifted clothes to £32,000.
The PM has been in the crosshairs for weeks over the lavish support showered upon him and members of his frontbench team by the media businessman. Over £2,400 for glasses, thousands of pounds’ worth of free football and concert tickets, and the temporary use of an £18 million penthouse during the election campaign came out of Alli’s never-ending gift bag.
The Labour donor himself caused controversy in August after it emerged he had been given a temporary Downing Street security pass, despite having no formal government role. That said, Alli has been credited with the role of Starmer's personal “fixer.”

⚡️Hezbollah officially confirms death of movement's leader Hassan Nasrallah – statement "His Eminence Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, Secretary-General of Hezbollah, has joined his great and immortal martyred comrades, whose path he led for nearly thirty years"…
Who was Hassan Nasrallah? A deep dive into Hezbollah's longstanding leader
Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut on Friday alongside several commanders of the powerful Lebanese Shia Islamist political party and paramilitary force which he led for 32 years.
Early life and rise to power
⭕️ Humble beginnings: Born in 1960 in Beirut, Hassan Nasrallah was the eldest of nine children in a poor, not particularly religious family of greengrocers. His family fled Beirut in 1975 at the start of the Lebanese Civil War. In 1978, Nasrallah joined the Amal Movement, a Shia political and militia group founded by Iranian-Lebanese cleric Musa al-Sadr.
⭕️ Joining Hezbollah: In 1982, Nasrallah transitioned to Hezbollah, a newly-formed, Iran-backed militia established to resist the Israeli invasion of southern Lebanon. His quick rise within the ranks led him to become chief of Hezbollah’s executive council by 1985.
Mentorship and leadership
Nasrallah’s ties with Shia leaders and revolutionary figures during his travels in Iraq and Iran in the 70s and 80s set him up for greater roles. In 1992, after the assassination of Abbas al-Musawi, Hezbollah's then-leader and Nasrallah’s mentor, Nasrallah took over the leadership. He vowed to continue al-Musawi’s path, stating, “We will continue this path…even if we are martyred, all of us and our houses demolished over our heads, we will not abandon the choice of the Islamic Resistance.”
Nasrallah led Hezbollah for more than 30 years, shaping it into a major political and military force.
Military strategy and resistance
⭕️ Building Hezbollah’s Military Power: Under Nasrallah, Hezbollah grew into one of the most formidable militias in the Middle East. It adopted guerrilla warfare tactics while incorporating special operations units, like the elite Radwan Force, and expanded its capabilities with long-range rockets, missiles, and drones. By 2021, Nasrallah claimed that Hezbollah’s strength had reached 100,000 fighters.
⭕️ Resistance against Israel: Hezbollah's military victories against Israel became Nasrallah's key legacy. In 2000, Hezbollah forced Israel to withdraw from southern Lebanon after years of guerrilla warfare. In 2006, during the Lebanon War, Hezbollah held off Israeli forces, earning it widespread popularity among supporters as the only Arab armed force to push back the IDF.
Political transformation and diplomacy
⭕️ Institutionalizing Hezbollah: Nasrallah played a crucial role in embedding Hezbollah into Lebanon's political life. Under his leadership, the party participated in elections, winning 12 parliamentary seats in 1992 and 15 seats by 2022, making it a significant player in Lebanese politics. He also altered Hezbollah’s platform in 2009 to focus on resistance to external enemies, and dropped the goal of creating an Islamic republic in Lebanon, out of respect for the country's religious diversity.
⭕️ Diplomatic ties: At the international level, Hezbollah forged diplomatic ties unusual for a non-state actor of its stature, becoming a key member of the Iran-led Axis of Resistance. And although the US, its European allies, and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries list the group as a ‘terrorist organization’, Hezbollah maintains cordial contacts with rising global powers, including Russia and China, in no small part thanks to Nasrallah’s diplomacy and moderating influence.
Legacy and final months
⭕️ Unyielding in resistance: Even in the last months of his life, Nasrallah continued to support Palestinian fighters and lead Hezbollah in clashes with Israeli forces. His fiery speeches inspired many, and he remained a steadfast figure of resistance until his reported death in an Israeli airstrike on September 27, 2024.
⭕️ Personal life: Known for his personal modesty, Nasrallah earned a salary of just $1,300 per month. He is survived by his wife and two children, with his son Muhammad Hadi dying in a clash with Israeli forces in 1997.
