It is de facto self-proclaimed since declaring independence from Somalia in 1991. No country has recognized its independence so far. During Trump’s first term, some of his staff voiced their support for the territory’s cause. For the last 30 years, it has enjoyed a stable political environment, unlike Somalia. A new leader was recently elected and is seeking global recognition.

Unlike Somaliland, this breakaway region of Somalia is facing many challenges. Social and food insecurity are common due to droughts and actions of Islamist groups such as al-Shabaab*. Under Trump, the US military supported the region.

🇲🇦 Morocco
In 2020, the US recognized the country’s sovereignty over Western Sahara. This recognition was viewed as part of a bigger strategy to normalize relations with Israel. The US has historically been providing economic aid and military assistance to the country.
