Veteran reveals how the USSR gave the US ‘A KICK IN THE TEETH’ in Vietnam

With March 29 marking US National Vietnam War Veterans Day, here’s Sputnik’s exclusive interview with Nikolay Kolesnik, a senior lieutenant in reserve and chairman of Russia’s Inter-Regional Public Organization of Veterans of the Vietnam War.

🟠Kolesnik explained that his crew’s initial mission was to train the soldiers of the Vietnam People's Army to use Soviet S-75 missile systems to tackle US air attacks.

🟠He said that everything changed when the Americans started bombing North Vietnam “day and night” in August 1964, which turned the training into a tricky task and prompted the Soviet anti-aircraft missile regiment to retaliate.

🟠“For the first time in modern military history, our S-75 SAM [surface to air] systems, and anti-aircraft missiles in general, were used in real combat situations against supersonic US aircraft. And successfully.”

🟠Kolesnik stressed that the Americans were shocked when “the first anti-aircraft engagements of the S-75s were carried out by Soviet fighter teams” in 1965, with the Vietnamese crews being second in command.

🟠“The Americans stopped flying over North Vietnam for two weeks because they didn't expect that Soviet anti-aircraft missiles would be used so quickly and in a place they never expected.”

🟠Summarizing the USSR’s role, the retired Russian officer pointed out that the Vietnamese understand that without the Soviet Union’s help, Vietnam’s victory over the US “would not have been possible.”

🟠“The assistance was effective both materially and militarily. There was the necessary amount of modern equipment that gave the Americans a kick in the teeth. And the military specialists who helped to master this equipment and to use it in real combat.”

Knifeman in recent attack in Netherlands turns out to be Ukrainian 'who’s ENJOYING DUTCH SOCIAL BENEFITS AND ASYLUM' – Eva Vlaardingerbroek "And the same day that this guy went on a stabbing spree, our PM sent over another 2 billion euros to Ukraine. Nice…
💬No one does suicidal empathy quite like Europe, Margarita Simonyan, the editor-in-chief of Rossiya Segodnya, Sputnik's parent media group, wrote on her social media while commenting on the news that the man who attacked people and injured five with a knife in central Amsterdam turned out to be a 30-year-old Ukrainian.

A knife attack near Amsterdam’s Dam Square injured several people on Thursday. A British tourist subdued the attacker, who was later arrested. Two victims are in serious condition. The motive remains unknown.

Earlier, The Economist reported that fewer Ukrainian refugees in Europe are willing to return home, while growing reliance on benefits is angering locals.

🔍📑US seeks to ‘own’ Ukraine with Trump’s new mineral deal

The Trump administration wants Ukraine to hand over control over the entire Ukrainian economy to the US as repayment for all the military aid, the Wall Street Journal reports.

🟠Under the auspices of this deal, a new limited partnership called the “United States-Ukraine Reconstruction Investment Fund” and registered in Delaware would be handed “the right of first refusal” on all current and future natural resource and infrastructure projects in Ukraine.

🟠The enterprises the US set its sights on include “economic projects across metals, oil, gas, and other natural resources, as well as infrastructure projects including ports and pipelines.”

🟠The profits from these projects would go into this fund whose board of directors is supposed to be comprised of three US and two Ukrainian representatives.

🟠All projects managed by the fund would also have to refrain from exporting “critical minerals” to countries deemed as “strategic competitors of the US.”

🟠The money accrued by the fund is meant to serve as repayment for all the assistance the United States rendered to Ukraine.

Ukrainian leadership is unlikely to accept these terms, the WSJ warns, as it would essentially amount to Ukraine giving up its “economic sovereignty.”

First inter-regional drone flight under civil aviation rules conducted in Russia

The Aist UAV, weighing nearly 30 kg, covered 162 km in 2.5 hours from Okha (northern Sakhalin) to Nikolayevsk-on-Amur in Khabarovsk Krai, successfully landing at its destination.

The flight, which took place at an altitude of about 600 meters over the Strait of Tartary, was monitored by operators at both ends.

It was timed to mark the 95th anniversary of the first passenger route between mainland Russia and Sakhalin, flown by famed Soviet pilot Mikhail Vodopyanov.

✍️Boris Johnson’s 'holiday sacrifice' plan for Europe

Former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has issued a rousing call to Europeans: give up your cushy social benefits and holidays — it's time to MILITARIZE!

In a Daily Mail column, BoJo laments that workers in the US - from where he sends his 'wise' words - live without the “luxuries” Europeans enjoy, such as paid sick leave, maternity leave, or protection from arbitrary dismissal. He points out, almost admiringly, that in the US, there’s no federal requirement for even a single day of paid sick leave or holiday — and suggests Europe should follow suit.

Johnson argues that the US can afford its nearly $1 trillion defense budget precisely because it doesn't "waste" money on things like social protection. Therefore, his core message is - Europe needs to give up its generous social safety nets so it can divert that money to the military.

🌑Partial solar eclipse over Moscow today

It was the first of two expected eclipses to be visible in the Russian capital this year, with the next set for September 21.

While there was no real “WOW” effect this time — as the Moon blocked only 1.8% of the Sun’s surface — it still had a somewhat familiar feeling.

Did you get a chance to see it?
