A new survey by the Toy Association trade group says American-owned companies are delaying or cancelling orders en masse, with up to 46% of smaller firms, and 45% of larger ones facing bankruptcy within weeks or months if the US-China trade war isn’t put to rest.

81% of small toy companies with revenues between $10-100M said they’ve delayed orders due to Trump’s 145% tariffs. 64% said they’ve been cancelling them. Among mid-size companies (revenues greater than $100M), the figure is 87% and 80%, respectively. The survey queried 410 companies total.

The survey is bad news for American holiday shoppers, with toy and Christmas-themed goods having lead times of about 4-5 months from Chinese factory to US store shelves.

Trump acknowledged the potential shortages this week, but said it wasn’t be a big deal. “Maybe the children will have two dolls instead of 30 dolls, and maybe the two dolls will cost a couple of bucks more,” he said.
