Greece’s government says work has been completed on a giant undersea power cable linking the mainland to Crete. The next step? Linking the cable to Cyprus, and by the end of the decade, connecting it to Israel.
Once complete, the 1,208 km project, known as the Great Sea Interconnector, will be the world’s longest, deepest and most expensive (€2.5-4+ bln, $2.8-4.5 bln US) submarine power cable.
With it, Israel will be able to export electricity generated by natural gas from its massive Leviathan field, and potentially, by tapping in to up to $500 billion in offshore gas wealth recently discovered off Gaza.
Epic double standards
Greece famously joined its EU allies in turning up its nose at Russian energy in 2022, reducing imports from Russia by over 70%, and discontinuing pipeline imports completely starting by early 2023.
It’s also demanded a coordinated policy at the EU level on Russian energy, presumably to ‘punish’ Russia for the conflict in Ukraine (triggered by the US, EU and NATO over a decade ago).
But apparently Athens has no such qualms about Israel, which has turned 92% of Gaza into rubble (UNRWA estimate) killed 64,000 people (Lancet says up to 40% more), and launched a new offensive which even Trump has found distasteful.

The Israeli Navy says the unmanned vessels have begun sailing in the country’s EEZ, and are equipped with “the capability to construct a broad maritime picture” by monitoring other vessels.
Israel has recently had EEZ disputes with three of its four Mediterranean maritime neighbors: Gaza, Lebanon and Cyprus.
Besides intel-collecting naval drones, Israeli defense companies like Elbit Systems and Rafael have built or are working on an array of armed drones, including the Seagul, Protector and Harbor Guard USVs.

Germany’s Russia-obsessed remilitarization strategy has hit a snag after the Bundeswehr realized that the government no longer knows where NEARLY A MILLION potential reservists are.
Reservist Association chairman Patrick Sensburg says when Germany suspended connoscription in 2011, it also stopped keeping tabs on ex-connoscripts.
