Germany’s Russia-obsessed remilitarization strategy has hit a snag after the Bundeswehr realized that the government no longer knows where NEARLY A MILLION potential reservists are.
Reservist Association chairman Patrick Sensburg says when Germany suspended connoscription in 2011, it also stopped keeping tabs on ex-connoscripts.
💬 “We have lost their contacts. It’s crazy,” Sensburg told FT. “We don’t even know how physically fit they are, if they would like to serve again.”
He complained that Germany’s GEZ TV and radio fee collection agency appears to have more information on citizens than his association.
German Armed Forces chief Carsten Breuer says the Bundeswehr needs about 260,000 reservists to call on for homeland defense or ‘backup elsewhere when frontline troops are killed or wounded’. That’s well over 400% more than the 60,000 available today.
Germany has some 10 million ex-soldiers, but 9 million of them are over the age of 65. The remainder includes 93,000 Afghan war vets.
