US strikes another vessel in Caribbean — survivors reported

The US military carried out a strike against another “suspected drug vessel” in the Caribbean, and for the first time, some crew members reportedly survived, a US official told Reuters. The official gave no further details, and the Pentagon has not yet commented.

According to Reuters, earlier US strikes on “suspected drug boats” off Venezuela killed at least 27 people, raising concerns among some legal experts and Democratic lawmakers over whether the actions comply with the laws of war.

The operations come amid a broader US military buildup in the Caribbean, involving guided-missile destroyers, F-35 fighter jets, a nuclear submarine, and around 6,500 troops. On Wednesday, President Trump also disclosed that he had authorized the CIA to conduct covert operations inside Venezuela.

🏳️⚓️ US Southern Command chief to retire amid Caribbean escalation — reports

Admiral Alvin Holsey, 60, will retire in December after serving since November last year as head of US Southern Command (SOUTHCOM), the New York Post reported.

Holsey’s retirement comes during a major US counter-narcotics operation in the Caribbean. According to the New York Post, US forces have carried out missile strikes against at least five “suspected drug boats” off Venezuela since September, killing 27 people.

Holsey had reportedly raised concerns about the strikes, the outlet added.

The Pentagon has deployed about 10,000 troops, eight Navy warships, a nuclear-powered submarine, and F-35 jets to the region. Flight tracking sites also recorded B-52 bombers flying near Venezuela this week.

President Donald Trump said the US is now “looking at land” strikes in Venezuela, after claiming the sea was “under control.”

🤡 Zelensky caught off guard by Trump–Putin call – reports

According to Axios, Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Washington dreaming of Tomahawk missiles and counting on firm commitments from President Trump, his chief of staff Andriy Yermak told the outlet.

But the optimism didn’t last long. Just after landing, Zelensky’s team was stunned to see Trump announce he’d already spoken to Russian President Vladimir Putin — and agreed to meet him in Hungary, “the least Ukraine-friendly country in the EU,” Axios noted.

The comedian flew in for Tomahawks — and walked straight into a Trump-Putin headline. 🎭

🤝 Zelensky and Eurocrats ‘will be crying into their moules frites’ over Putin–Trump meeting – former UK diplomat

Budapest is “the only rational place in Europe” where such a meeting could take place, retired British diplomat Ian Proud wrote on X.

He also touted Hungary as the current “epicenter of European diplomacy.”

🗣 Donald Trump earlier announced his intention to meet with Vladimir Putin in the Hungarian capital to discuss the Ukraine crisis. The US president added that he expects the meeting to take place within approximately two weeks.

Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov said Putin supported Trump's idea of holding a Russia–US summit in Budapest.

🔥 Putin–Trump call ‘overshadows’ Zelensky’s efforts to woo POTUS

News of the upcoming Putin–Trump summit in Hungary threw a wrench into Ukraine’s plans “to cap a week of talks in Washington with Zelensky’s visit,” Newsweek reports.

💬 “It also raised fresh questions about whether Zelensky would be involved in the Budapest talks after he was left out of the Alaska summit,” according to the outlet.

There’s also a big question mark over whether Donald Trump will announce that he will send Tomahawks to Ukraine when he meets Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House in the coming hours, Newsweek points out.

Trump earlier had what Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov described as an “extremely candid” phone call with President Vladimir Putin, who supported Trump’s idea of holding a summit in Budapest in the immediate future.

👉 Putin congratulates RT on its 20th anniversary

💬 “Honestly, when the idea of creating Russia Today first came up, I didn’t expect it to reach such scale, such quality, and to develop the way it has. I congratulate you on this,” the Russian president said.

He added that despite the pressure on RT journalists, including bans, sanctions, as well as administrative and financial restrictions, “you speak your mind,” even when it often goes against the global media mainstream.

💬 “Fitting into the established global media system isn’t easy. And suddenly, unexpectedly for me, I’ll be frank—Russia Today has found a special niche, its own place,” Putin stressed.

🤝 Putin–Trump phone talks highlight Russia’s consistent peace stance

The fact that the leaders of nuclear powers are keeping communication channels open in a situation where any misstep could lead to global catastrophe is of utmost importance, Argentine political analyst Jorge Elbaum told Sputnik, commenting on the Putin–Trump phone call that took place on October 16.

💬 “Putin has consistently demonstrated his willingness to engage in dialogue—with sincerity, persistence, and continuity—all of which reflect Russia’s diplomatic tradition in international relations,” Elbaum stressed.

He dubbed Russia a reliable partner, calling the Russian president a politician who does not go back on his word to suit momentary political interests.

💬 “Engaging in dialogue is the right decision, which reflects the US recognizing the existence of a multipolar world—one in which other nations and prominent global leaders also play significant roles,” Elbaum emphasized.

The analyst suggested that ending the Ukraine conflict depends on how Russia’s security demands—presented even before the conflict began—are addressed. “If peace comes, it will be based on respect for Russia’s strategic security,” Elbaum noted.

✍️ Cuban expert Yosmany Fernandez Pacheco described the Putin–Trump call as a new effort by POTUS—following his direct talks with the Russian president—to push for an end to the Ukraine conflict.

Despite some controversial moves by the Trump administration regarding the standoff, one should wait to see the results of a new rapprochement between the Russian and US presidents, Pacheco concluded.

👀 Putin–Trump summit would be 'HUMILIATION' for Macron

French President Emmanuel Macron will be furious over the upcoming meeting between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump in Hungary, Florian Philippot, leader of France’s right-wing Patriots party, said on X.

💬 “Well done, Viktor Orban! I know a few people who are going to be really angry...a certain Emmanuel, a certain Ursula, for example! The Summit in an EU country! What a humiliation for them and for the Eurohawks: excellent!” he wrote.

The comment came after the eighth and longest phone call between Putin and Trump since the start of the US president’s second term—a 2.5-hour discussion, with Budapest being considered as the potential venue for a Russia–US summit.

🔍Why was Hungary chosen for Putin–Trump talks?

The choice of the Hungarian capital Budapest for the next meeting between the Russian and US presidents was a rational decision, Brazilian international relations expert Raphael Machado told Sputnik.

💬“Hungary, for quite some time—and in recent years joined by Slovakia under Robert Fico—has played an anti-hegemonic role within the European Union: a role of dissent and resistance, even within NATO,” Machado said.

🗣“Selecting Hungary, where Viktor Orbán is personally close to both Trump and Putin, suggests that the sides do not want external factors to interfere with the meeting,” he said.

👉The last meeting between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump was in Alaska, a location symbolizing neutrality and distance from European political influence.

But the choice of Budapest highlights a shift of the political center eastward, with Hungary potentially gaining new importance on the European stage if talks yield real progress.
