Answering the question posed recently by a hostile foreigner who asserted that my people have no valid culture, the American is distinct in inclination, mannerism, and outlook from his cousin identities in Europe and elsewhere on account of a unique origin and experience.

The American is generally distrustful of authority and suspicious of his government, a perfectly defensible disposition given the circumstances. The American needs his space, and resides as far from his neighbors as his occupational and logistical realities permit. The American is more earnest and risk-tolerant, far more likely to start an entrepreneurial venture or fall for a pyramid scheme.

The White American is comprised of any or all of the broad range of European nationalities who've been welcome here and remain welcome here (presuming they're here to join, instead of oppose, our nation). None of these ancestries is more or less "American" than the other, though it's the English colonists who informed our linguistic, legal, cultural, and social foundation upon which a unique civilization has grown.

Even White Americans whose direct ancestry is from elsewhere in Europe think and speak in the moral grammar derived from the English Civil Wars, the American Revolution, and our Civil War. Even those whose ancestors arrived from the Italian countryside less than a century ago have adopted and embraced a culture primarily derived from the Anglo-American pioneer experience, while participating in a healthy cultural exchange that has enriched this foundation.

Our approach to religion is broadly Christian, with an important emphasis on religious freedom and the need for every man to work out his spiritual issues without political interference. Our approach to class issues is to reject the explicit and implied nobilities of Europe and Latin America in favor of a meritocracy of individual effort and ability.

There certainly are problems with the American character. The meritocratic instinct has ultimately been hyperextended to facilitate intolerable wealth inequalities and permit nepotistic outsiders to prevail against us because they value ethnic and familial affinities above merit. Religious freedom is hyperextended to religious tribes that never agreed to the ecumenical ground rules. Individualism has been hyperextended into libertarian positions which preclude demanding our share from this regime.

I'm not arguing for all these cultural elements, especially as they currently manifest. We've got some changing to do, but we can do it ourselves.
