📑 Closed-loop brain training: the science of neurofeedback
NATURE REVIEWS | NEUROSCIENCE
✅ #Neurofeedback is a psychophysiological procedure in which online feedback of neural activation is provided to the participant for the purpose of self-regulation. Learning control over specific neural substrates has been shown to change specific behaviours. As a progenitor of brain–machine interfaces, neurofeedback has provided a novel way to investigate brain function and neuroplasticity. In this Review, we examine the mechanisms underlying neurofeedback, which have started to be uncovered. We also discuss how neurofeedback is being used in novel experimental and clinical paradigms from a multidisciplinary perspective, encompassing neuroscientific, neuroengineering and learning-science viewpoints.

✅ Overview of the procedure of #Neurofeedback
🔹 Neurofeedback begins with observation of neural activity. Electrophysiological methods to detect such activity include electroencephalography (EEG), magnetoencephalography (MEG) and invasive electrocorticography (ECoG), and haemodynamic imaging methods for detecting neural activity include functional MRI (fMRI) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). The grids on canonical neural tissues provide a qualitative reference for the relative spatial resolutions of the various imaging technologies. Sample signals that are extracted from both types of these sensor channels provide a qualitative representation of the difference in temporal resolution. Electrophysiological and haemodynamic signals can be processed in similar ways. Univariate approaches extract a signal from a single channel or region of interest, for example, an evoked potential. Calculation of coherence or connectivity between two channels as a measure of functional connectivity is another common feedback method. Features from a set of sensors, such as the power at a frequency window or the level of activation, can be classified as multivariate patterns of activity (MVPAs). The calculated signal is then presented to the individual via visual, auditory, haptic or electrical stimulation feedback, allowing the user to alter neural function and complete the loop with neural processing of feedback. The advantages and disadvantages of these modalities, as well as how their signals are processed for neurofeedback, are discussed in BOX 1. FFT, fast Fourier transformation.

A very prominent publication with #SMI MRI-LR system in Nature Neuroscience (impact factor 16.724) by a researchers team from Princeton University, Johns Hopkins University, Stanford University, and the University of Toronto, who wondered: If two people describe the same event, how similar are their underlying neural codes?

The research team discovered depression was linked to an increase in oxidative stress and decrease in antioxidant substances. Additionally, after receiving treatment, both levels of malondialdehyde, a biomarker of oxidative stress, and antioxidant substances returned to normal.
@Farmed
The international research team linked the development of Alzheimer’s disease to a specific virus and two types of bacteria, providing evidence that the neurodegenerative disease had a dormant microbial component. They also found that the dormant microbes could become active with iron dysregulation.
@Farmed
Researchers reported they had identified biomarkers for chronic fatigue syndrome in both inflammatory microbial agents in the blood and gut bacteria.
The findings provide new evidence against the long standing concept that CFS is merely a psychological disorder, by identifying biological biomarkers for the disease.
@Farmed
Researchers discovered that those who used marijuana heavily expressed lower dopamine release in the striatum, an area of the brain associated with working memory and attention.
This was a ground breaking finding as previous studies had linked similar alterations in dopamine release to heavier drugs, such as cocaine and heroin.
@Farmed
Researchers from UC Santa Cruz and the University of Illinois report that our ever increasing reliance on the internet and our ease of access to new information is affecting our ability to learn and recall facts from memory, as well as impeding our ability to solve problems.
The researchers also found that our ‘cognitive offloading’, our reliance on technology as a memory aid, increased after each time it was used.
@Farmed
Researchers from the Carlos III University of Madrid released a new paper which claimed that 90 percent of the population can be classified into one of four personality types. The four basic personality types the researchers identified were: trusting, envious, pessimistic and optimistic, with most people falling into the envious personality type (30% of the population).
The researchers believe the findings are not only important for the field of social psychology, but also for the future development of robots to make them more ‘humanized’.
@Farmed
Researchers found that, after playing for just one season, football players showed significant changes in both white and gray matter that was associated with head trauma.
