Hunting sword with sheath: Sword maker: Handle attributed to Joseph Deutschmann (German, Imst 1717-1787 Passau) Date: ca. 1740 Munich.
Very similar ivory sword handles, carved with elaborate Rococo ornament of nautilus shells, snails and waves, are registered in the armoury of the Prince Elector of Bavaria in Munich in the 1740s. The lion at the top of the handle holds a crescent moon under its foot, likely alluding to recent European victories over the Ottoman Turks in Eastern Europe
