Your Responsibilities:

As a research intern at Context Scout, you will assist our machine learning team in building and testing bespoke NLP and IR technology:
· You will design and develop machine learning techniques to model customer behaviour and preferences.
· You will work with large and complex datasets of web browsing behaviour to investigate underlying patterns, correlations and trend.
· You will research and leverage new machine learning methodologies to improve current products and influence the future roadmap.
· You will contribute to academic publications submitted to top tier conference venues and journals
· You will work at the forefront of web search technology with a dedicated team of engineers, researchers and entrepreneurs

Qualifications:
You should have:
· Solid previous experience in solving large analytical problems using statistical, machine learning or other quantitative methods (e.g. supervised/unsupervised learning, graphical models, time series analysis, statistical testing)
· B.S. degree (or higher) in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering (or equivalent experience)
· Solid programming skills in at least one of, Python, Scala, C/C++ or Java (Python is preferred).
· Self-motivated researcher with ability to work on industrially relevant research

Experience with some of the following is a plus:
· Working with machine learning, information retrieval, web search, NLP, knowledge bases and graph frameworks such as Pandas, scikit-learn, NumPy or SciPy
· Working in a research team
· Working in a fast-paced startup environment

This is an 8-12 week summer internship position provided by UCL but working in cooperation with the Context Scout team. The position offers:

Abstract
WordNet is a large lexical database of English language, in which, nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs are grouped into sets of cognitive synonyms (synsets). Each synset expresses a distinct concept. Synsets are interlinked by both semantic and lexical relations. WordNet is essentially used for word sense disambiguation, information retrieval, and text translation. In this paper, we propose several automatic methods to extract Information and Communication Technology (ICT)-related data from Princeton WordNet. We, then, add these extracted data to our Persian WordNet. The advantage of automated methods is reducing the interference of human factors and accelerating the development of our bilingual ICT WordNet.
In our first proposed method, based on a small subset of ICT words, we use the definition of each synset to decide whether that synset is ICT. The second mechanism is to extract synsets which are in a semantic relation with ICT synsets. We also use two similarity criteria, namely LCS and S3M, to measure the similarity between a synset definition in WordNet and definition of any word in Microsoft dictionary. Our last method is to verify the coordinate of ICT synsets. Results show that our proposed mechanisms are able to extract ICT data from Princeton WordNet at a good level of accuracy.

Requirements
============
We are looking for two candidates, one with a strong focus on information
retrieval/NLP and one with a strong focus on machine learning/data science,
with the following profile:

+ MSc in Computer Science, or a related field (including Applied
Mathematics, Computer Engineering, Computational Linguistics);
+ followed MSc courses and have research experience (e.g. at Master thesis
level) in the at least some of the following areas: information retrieval,
natural language processing, machine learning (in particular deep
learning), dialogue systems, and human computer interaction;
+ enjoy research and are self-motivated;
+ are team players;
+ have excellent communication skills in English.
