Buthelezi, a Zulu prince, served as leader of KwaZulu, one of several "African homelands" created during apartheid. Despite his opposition to white rule in South Africa, Buthelezi was known for his strident Zulu nationalism, often clashing with the ANC and eventually allying with Terre-Blanche's Afrikaner Resistance Movement in an attempt to disrupt the multiethnic elections of 1994. Following the end of apartheid, he continued his opposition to the ANC, leading the right-wing, pro-Zulu Inkatha Freedom Party.
