Dozens of migrants attempted to sail to Italy from Libya, but their fishing vessel sank off the coast of southern Greece. Coast guard officials believe the tragedy may have happened after the boat ran out of fuel or suffered engine trouble, with the movement of passengers inside the vessel causing it to list and ultimately capsize. Initial reports suggested up to 400 people were aboard the boat.
Rescuers saved 104 passengers, but hundreds of others may have been trapped below deck. Rescue operations are continuing.
Many risk their lives every year in hopes of a better life, and they use the most dangerous methods that often end badly. In Tunisia, there's a whole cemetery of dead migrants that is run voluntarily be a local man. Why does he do it? Discover in our documentary, 'Fisher of Men' (2019).
