🚀Sixty years ago, the flight of the first female cosmonaut, Valentina Tereshkova, took place. Her solo mission aboard the spacecraft Vostok 6 was a great historical event not only for the Soviet Union, but for all mankind.

Tereshkova aspired to rocket into space as a young girl: she parachuted and made more than one hundred jumps. Thanks to her sporting success and physical prowess, she eventually became chosen to be the first female to conquer space.

Dancing from dawn to dusk for several days – that’s how boys and girls of Brazil’s Tembé people become men and women. The coming-of-age ritual leaves youngsters with swollen and bandaged feet. Nevertheless, it’s a part of a vital rite of passage known as ‘Wyra’whaw.’

‘We keep doing our rituals, so we don’t lose our language and our culture,’ explains chief Sérgio Muti Tembé. The children are given a white headband with dangling feathers, and paint their bodies with Jenipapo, a fruit that taints the skin black.
