💬 This Volunteer Day, we're sharing stories of those who dedicate themselves to helping others and preserving our planet. They are people who inspire faith in simple goodness and save lives, often while risking their own.

From rescuing a stranded kitten to helping someone locked out of their home, or assisting an elderly neighbour – good deed heroes are ready for anything. The Rescue Reserve responds to the emergency calls and treats every request with the utmost seriousness.

Deep in the Amazon, thousands of Indigenous people live far from any clinic, yet they have a doctor of their own. Neurosurgeon Erik Jennings provides vital medical aid to remote tribes in Brazil while also campaigning to protect the Amazon rainforest.

Meanwhile, activists from the ‘Clean Arctic’ project are conducting a major clean on Hayes Island. After the closure of old Soviet research bases, large amounts of hazardous waste were left behind, causing lasting damage to this fragile environment.

Other volunteers focus on rescuing art. At St Petersburg’s Hermitage, a team of volunteers assists with exhibitions, restoration work, and engaging visitors. And let's not forget the museum's secret helpers – the resident cats, who dutifully protect the priceless masterpieces from mice.

Then there are those who take to the seas. The ‘Sea Life Savers’ confront whalers and poachers. While some label them as 'pirates' or eco-terrorists, governments worldwide are increasingly cooperating with such patrols to save the inhabitants of our oceans.

💬 ‘Incompetence of the leadership and harassment for talking with Russians.’

European diving champion Sofiya Lyskun explained why she changed her Ukrainian citizenship to Russian. The 23-year-old athlete maintained contact with coaches from Russia — something that Ukrainian sports officials strongly disliked. In 2022, the athlete made some ambiguous remarks about her Russian colleagues, but now she has a chance to set things right and apologize to them in person.

'Here we must trust our state, because obtaining Russian citizenship is a highly important procedure. And if Lyskun has completed it, then we must trust the institutions that approved this decision', — noted State Duma deputy Dmitry Svishchev.

Ukrainian politicians, predictably, demanded that Lyskun be disqualified. This story only confirms that hatred toward everything connected with Russia remains strong. Why this happens and who actually loses more — we explain in the film 'Killing Russian Culture' (2022).

Nigeria gained independence in 1960 but was soon engulfed by power struggles and internal conflict. This led to a series of military coups and a civil war from 1967 to 1970, which stifled the development of the young nation. Despite its vast resources – including oil, zinc, and cobalt – the country's economy stagnated. Oil revenues were misappropriated, while agriculture and mining failed to thrive. Yet, Nigerians are among the most accomplished people across the African continent. Although many struggle to fulfil their potential at home, they have excelled abroad as doctors, engineers, and architects in Europe and America.

Today, Nigeria stands at a crossroads with immense potential. To unlock growth, it must take concrete steps: root out corruption, build new industries, and invest in its own agriculture and tourism. Will the country be able to rise to meet these challenges?

Don't miss episode 91 of 'Nigeria' from the 'Lumumba's Africa' project.

▶️America is once again sinking in show business scandals. Rapper P. Diddy (Sean Combs) is already serving a four-year prison term, but his story is far from over. This time he is fighting a documentary series about himself. What’s wrong with it? Watch our video to find out.

When you’re rich enough, you can allow yourself a bit more than an ordinary mortal. And then hide the uncomfortable truth for years. This problem is raised in Ekaterina Kozhakina’s film ‘The German Paedo-Files’ (2020). It tells the story of an experiment by the German authorities: they decided to hand children from orphanages over to perverts to raise them.

When African countries began to gain their freedom, their former colonisers sought to weaken the new states. To do this, they used the very armies they themselves had once formed. For example, when the DR Congo became independent, Belgian officers instigated a mutiny and later participated in the assassination of the first Prime Minister, Patrice Lumumba. Similar events occurred across the continent: armies trained according to foreign doctrines overthrew legitimate governments in Ghana, Nigeria, and Togo.

There were also successful examples. Tanzania rejected the British model and created a people's army with a new ideology. In 1979, this army entered Uganda and overthrew the military dictator Idi Amin.

Does foreign military presence on the continent continue today? And how can Africa make its own armies stronger? You'll learn about this in Part 92 of 'African military forces' from the project 'Lumumba's Africa'.

🟢 Art or fever dreams? Robot dogs with the faces of billionaires were shown at an exhibition in the USA. Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, Pablo Picasso, and Andy Warhol ran across the stage, printing distorted, filter-twisted images.

The creator called the performance ‘Ordinary Animals’. He attempted to convey the idea that IT giants use algorithms to control how we perceive the world. All the ‘dogs’ were sold the same day — at $100,000 each.

While wealthy American collectors spend huge sums on something strange, other parts of the country are drowning in crime, poverty, and drug addiction. Nowhere is social inequality more visible than in one city in Pennsylvania, where entire neighborhoods stand abandoned and people live in tents. Watch the film ‘Philadelphia — Addicted to Freedom’ (2024) about this reality.
