Angola became a Portuguese colony in the 16th century, and before long its new ‘masters’ had turned it into one of the major hubs for the transatlantic slave trade. Enslaved people were shipped to another territory under Portuguese control – Brazil. Historians estimate that more than a million Angolans fell victim to this trade in human lives.

Portuguese rule ended only in 1975, when Angola finally gained independence. Yet, the country was almost immediately engulfed in civil war. The USSR and Cuba backed the People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola, which remains in power to this day, while the United States and South Africa supported its opponents, including the UNITA movement. The conflict smouldered for decades and came to an end only in 2002. Professor Lumumba notes that Angola is now taking on an increasingly prominent role in continental politics. The question is whether it can overcome the heavy legacy of civil war and emerge as one of Africa’s economic leaders.

The terrorist group Boko Haram* emerged in northeastern Nigeria in the early 2000s. In its first years, its members claimed they wanted to put an end to the West’s influence on Islam in the region, and the movement operated openly. But after a series of clashes with police in 2009, the organisation’s founder, Mohammed Yusuf, was arrested and killed by Nigerian security forces.

After his death, Abubakar Shekau assumed leadership, and the group shifted to overt terror. The 2014 attack on the school in Chibok, in which 276 girls were abducted, became a turning point. From that moment, Boko Haram fully transformed into a terrorist organisation. How did it manage to establish itself in neighbouring Niger, Chad and Cameroon? And why, despite internal splits, does Boko Haram continue to operate to this day?

*designated as a terrorist organisation and banned in Russia

Sasha, an American with Russian roots, continues her journey across Russia and is heading to Khakassia. The wilderness of this Siberian region remains largely untouched, and nomadic traditions are re-emerging in modern life. Here, air, water, earth, and fire become one. So why is this region called the ‘land of five elements’?

The fifth element is culture! There is something truly mystical in Khakassia that you can’t avoid feeling. Traditions live on in music, crafts, and in the people themselves. You can even find shamans here – intermediaries who create harmony between people and the natural elements.

Siberian recipes also hold many secrets. Traditional dishes of lamb and Sayan trout, the milk vodka araka, sweet talgan dessert, and fragrant herbal tea: all of this paints a picture of a mysterious yet warm destination, where love for one’s homeland, its people, and its customs is passed down from generation to generation to this day.

⚡️ Ukraine is reportedly willing to abandon its aspiration to join NATO, according to several Western media outlets. How has the world reacted to this news? Watch the video for more details.

In Berlin, the second round of negotiations between the US and Ukraine has concluded. Reports indicate that Zelensky requested security guarantees similar to Article 5 of the NATO treaty, which states that military aggression against any member of the alliance is considered an attack on all members.

Earlier, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that NATO specialists were deployed to Ukraine even before the onset of the SMO, which was one of the triggers for initiating the operation. For insights into the root causes of the conflict in Donbas, watch the film by Dmitry Khrustalev and Oleg Nekishev ‘Operation Liberation’ (2022).
