BLAS DE LEZO
He is considered one of the best strategists in the history of the Spanish Navy and known for directing, together with Viceroy Sebastián de Eslava, the successful defense of Cartagena de Indias (against a land army ten times his own and a fleet 30 times greater) during the British siege of 1741. Bold and courageous, he was first and foremost a man-at-arms, and as such received numerous wounds, some very serious.
Blas de Lezo had to amputate his left leg, destroyed by a cannonball. Shortly after, in 1707, in another free combat at the Toulon naval base against the English, he was wounded again. On this occasion, a shrapnel shrapnel damaged his left eye. In the siege of Barcelona, one of the last episodes of the War of Succession, he suffered a third wound that left his right arm useless. After the war, Blas de Lezo, only 25 years old, is lame, one-eyed and one-armed.
