Today I’m playing a contrabassoon excerpt from Pictures at an Exhibition (1874), a suite by Mussorgsky that Ravel orchestrated.
🛖🐓
Mussorgsky’s suite depicts a series of paintings separated by promenades. One of the most exciting movements, The Hut on Fowl’s Legs depicts the Slavic folk character Baba Yaga, a witch-like woman who lives in a hut on chicken legs and appears in many Russian fairy tales. Though the painting is just of a clock that has been made to look like Baba Yaga’s hut, Mussorgsky also incorporates other attributes of her persona, such as her mode of transportation: flying around in a mortar while she carries a pestle.
🛖🐓
This contrabassoon excerpt comes from the end of the movement. The character is ferocious and could evoke a chase as Baba Yaga flies by in her mortar.
🛖🐓
Please let me know if you have a favorite fairy tale or fairy tale piece you’d like me to play next!
