Happy 83rd birthday to Giorgio Moroder! One of the greats of early electronic music, he's had a 50-year career, inventing Hi-NRG with tracks like Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love”, and writing music for artists like David Bowie, Falco, Kylie Minogue, Janet Jackson, Blondie, Japan and so many more.

Borh in northern Italy in 1940, he taught himself music production and then moved to Berlin in the 1960s where he had his first hits. In the 1970s he discovered synthesizers, notably Moog modulars, and they allowed him to craft the driving basslines and arpeggios that he's still known for.

In 1979, Moroder won an Oscar for his first soundtrack, for Alan Parker’s film Midnight Express. He went on to create the scores for American Gigolo, Superman III, Scarface, The Neverending Story. He won another Oscar for the noscript track to Flashdance, “What a Feeling”, and another for producing the theme to Top Gun, “Take My Breath Away”.
