#Ethiopia’s Lamecha Girma breaks indoor 3,000m world record

#Lamecha smashed the 25-year-old indoor 3,000m record of Kenya’s Daniel Komen (7:24.90), which has stood since 1998. Girma’s time was so fast that even his pacemakers couldn’t keep up, dropping out of the race one mile in. World 1,500m bronze medallist Mohamed Katir of Spain held to Lamecha’s heels until the final lap, falling off for second in a European record of 7:24.68 (now the second fastest time in history).

To put Lamecha's time in perspective, his pace over the 3,000m was two minutes and 28 seconds per kilometre and 3:58 per mile. Lamecha went through 1,500m in 3:42 and through 2,000m in a mind-boggling four minutes and 55 seconds.

News Analysis: #Ethiopian Orthodox Church leaders resolve schism through dialogue, restore Church unity “based on church’s canon”

The Holy Synod of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (EOTC) and the breakaway archbishops have announced that they resolved their differences ending a near month-long schism that threatened the unity of the church through “constructive discussion” and according to “the canon of the church.”

“We will use the challenges we faced to test ourselves more deeply, to strengthen our unity, to use it for the good to preach the gospel more and expand the service of the church.”

In a joint statement released following the agreement, the two groups have reached a consensus to work together on the issues of language within the church’s services that led to the three breakaway archbishops, Abune Sawiros, Abune Eustatheos and Abune Zena Markos, to unilaterally ordain 26 episcopate resulting in the ex-communication of the archbishops and causing the schism.

Accordingly, the religious fathers have agreed to enhance the use of Afaan Oromoo language in all churches across Ormonia Regional State and to allocate additional budget for this and other administrate purposes, according to the statement.

Activities initiated by the church to serve the mass using their native language and assigning religious fathers who could serve the people in their own local languages will also be strengthened in a way that could answer the questions of the people, the statement added.

The leaders also vowed to “use the challenges we faced to test ourselves more deeply, to strengthen our unity, to use it for the good to preach the gospel more and expand the service of the church.”

News: Security forces kill six, injure more than 15 people in #Wolkite following protest against chronic lack of water

Biruk Alemu

Addis Abeba: Residents of Wolkite city, the administrative capital of the restive Gurage zone in Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples (SNNP) region, told #AddisStandard that the number of people killed by security forces yesterday has reached six, while more than 15 were seriously injured when security forces opened fire on protesters who were demonstrating against lack of fresh water carrying empty jerry cans.

Residents of the zone have long complained against heavy-handed measures by regional and federal security forces to contain their continued protests against government-backed clustering of the southern region to create two more new regional states out of the existing structure. The Gurage Zone Council had from the get go opposed to the restructuring as it was seeking its own regional state status, which it tabled as far back as November 2018.

Article 10 of the #Pretoria agreement stipulated that “…until elections for the Regional Council and the House of Peoples’ Representatives are held under the supervision of the Ethiopian National Election Board, the establishment of an inclusive Interim Regional Administration will be settled through political dialogue between the Parties”, a decision Tigrayan negotiating team signed, undoing the TPLF-led regional government administration which was elected into office in September 2020, just three months before the war broke out.

Breaking: #Oromia Region President calls for reconciliation with #OLA

Addressing the 6th regular meeting of Caffee Oromia, the regional council, President Shimellis Abdissa called on armed group Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) to come to reconciliation.

“In front of this respected Caffee (regional parliament) in the name of our people and with great respect I would like to call on armed groups operating in our region, “OLF-Shane” to come to reconciliation,” Shimellis said.

He, however warned “those who are unwilling to resolve the problem peacefully, we will be forced to continue the law enforcement measures.”

His remarks today came just a week after he said that he wanted to end the fighting Oromia region that has pitted federal and regional forces against OLA, often referred by the government as “Shene”, for more than four years.

Shimelis said that the region, together with the federal government was pursuing twofold means to put the region back into the paths of peace and prosperity. “The first and the primary” means to end the conflict in the region is “the peaceful path,” but he offered no concrete plan on how that was to be achieved.

News: Officials in #SNNP region warn prolonged drought in #Konso zone at alarming level

Regional authorities in Southern Nations, Nationalities and People’s (SNNP) regional state warned that the persistent drought the Konso zone has threatened the lives of many.

The area has not received sufficient precipitation for over four consecutive years, according to the Konso Zone.

The SNNP region’s disaster risk management task force including the region’s deputy President, Gelgelo Gelsho, recently visited the drought and violence-affected people of the zone.

“The drought situation has reached a critical point, rivers in the zone have all dried up, and an immediate solution is needed,” Gelgelo said.

In July last year, local authorities in Konso zone confirmed the death of at least 13 children due to hunger as drought and conflicts continue to affect the area. The number of malnourished children in the district was also growing, with more than 240 of them admitted to hospitals already.

Three major opposition political parties in war-torn Tigray Region have invalidated the recently announced committee authorized to lead the establishment of an Interim Regional Administration (IRA) in the region pursuant to the signed peace agreement between the federal government of Ethiopia and Tigray authorities in South Africa Pretoria on 02 November 2022.

The parties: Tigray Independence Party, Salsay Weyane and National Congress for Greater Tigray in a joint media briefing yesterday announced that they will not accept the committee that will oversee the establishment of Interim regional government in the region, adding that they have no relationship with the committee.

Dejen Mezgebe (PhD), Communication Director of Tigray Independent Party, one of the three parties, told Addis Standard that the process of setting up the committee was neither participatory nor inclusive that, “all the nominated members, including the military leaders and the scholars, are either current or former members of the TPLF”.

News: More than 60,000 mainly women, children arrive in #Ethiopia after fleeing recent clashes in #Laascaanood, #Somalia: #UN

More than 60,000 Somalis, mainly women and children, have fled to Ethiopia’s #Somali region in the past few weeks to escape clashes and insecurity in the city of Laascaanood, in Sool region. More than half of them arrived earlier this week.

Exhausted and traumatized, they have arrived with very little, only taking what they could carry. Women told staff from UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, that they had to sell their belongings to pay for transportation to reach safety. Many of them have lost loved ones in the clashes or have been separated during flight.

Families have temporarily settled across more than 13 locations in the towns of Bookh, Galhamur and Danot Woredasiin in the Doolo zone in Ethiopia’s Somali region. In an extremely remote area with a limited humanitarian presence, local communities in Doolo have generously welcomed the refugees, sharing whatever resources they have. But these are quickly depleting as an average of 1,000 people continue to cross into Ethiopia each day.

#Ethiopia: #OLA says #Oromia region call for reconciliation “welcome news”, issues “key aspects” to be clarified

“OLF-Shene” is the common name government officials use to refer to the OLA, a point underscored in the group’s statement as one of the “key aspects that any peace process ought to clarify from the beginning.”

The “call for peace did not address the OLA,” the statement said. “The regional president still refers to a phantom armed group called “OLF-Shane.” Whilst this may not make much difference in substance, it did not help clarify the already multi-layered ambiguities regarding the prospect for peace and how the Ethiopian government wishes to pursue it.”

Other “key aspects” include the group’s call that the peace process with it should be “led by the federal government,” and the involvement of “international actors” as “guarantors for the enforcement of mediation agreements.”

Commentary: A Call for a meaningful participation of #Irob and #Kunama communities in #Tigray Transitional Politics

By Hulluf Weldesilassie Kahsay

"All and sundry know that Tigray is forced to set up transitional or provisional governance arrangements as per the Pretoria and subsequent agreements. Now, apparently, the ball is in Tigray’s court to comply with the demand of Addis to set up a transitional/provisional government if it is to receive federal funds and for the Tigray Peoples Liberation Front (TPLF) to be removed from the terrorist designation. We from Tigray should come to terms with this as an inevitable reality. We all must negotiate with the reality on the ground without losing hope and sight of our collective aspiration as peoples of Tigray: Irobs, Kunama, and Tigrigna-speaking Tigrayans, civil society groups, diaspora – all of us.
