A temperate climate and fertile soil make the shores of Lake #Hawassa in Ethiopia ideal for raising cattle and growing animal feed.
Yet for small-scale farmers near the lake, 300 kilometers south of #Addis_Abeba, producing a large enough supply of safe milk to consistently earn a profit isn’t easy.
“The biggest challenge ahead is keeping up with farming technology,” said Eskender Yoseph, one of more than three dozen farmers in Ethiopia who gained access to farming technology through a partnership with the #USAID. “We need a lot of innovation to keep pace and maintain the quality of our farm products.”
He trains other young farmers through social media, teaching cattle and feed management, as well as other farming practices. In 2023, Yoseph trained over 70 young farmers from #Bahir_Dar, Addis Abeba... Millions of people have viewed his dairy farming videos on #YouTube & #Telegram.

A group of #Ethiopian nationals who were arrested in #Kenya and awaiting repatriation staged a hunger strike at the Athi River police station. The group had been found confined in a residential house in #Athi_River and had escaped before being apprehended. On 11 September, they refused meals, demanding a speedy repatriation process.
Similar incidents of hunger strikes have occurred in the past, with the previous group eventually being repatriated. Dozens of Ethiopians are arrested in Kenya as they attempt to use the country as a route to other destinations such as #Tanzania, the Middle East, and #SouthAfrica.
In an effort to combat this issue, an Ethiopian national, Yibekal Gatachew, was sentenced to 31 years in prison for trafficking 12 Ethiopian immigrants. Yibekal was found with fake documents and the immigrants were eventually repatriated to Ethiopia.

They predicted that the city’s extreme daily maximum temperatures would increase by about 1.7 °C over the period 2040–2060, compared with 2000–2020.
This increase would result in a rise in the frequency, duration, and intensity of heatwaves, which will threaten health, ecosystems, infrastructure, livelihoods, and food supplies. The city is expected to experience an additional 1.6 months of extreme drought annually between 2040 and 2060, a 53% increase compared with 2000-2020.
