Addis Abeba, the capital city of #Ethiopia, is one of the fastest-growing cities in Africa. Researchers at Tufts University and the Woodwell Climate Research Center, however, say this growth will be absorbed by informal settlements, which are characterized by poor or non-existent infrastructure and face the twin challenges of worsening climate change and poor urban environmental policy.

Researchers at Tufts University and the Woodwell Climate Research Center analyzed flood risk and temperature data for different time periods, projecting from the past to the future, to investigate the city’s vulnerability to climate change. They predicted that the city’s extreme daily maximum temperatures would increase by about 1.7 °C over the period 2040–2060, compared with 2000–2020.

This increase would result in a rise in the frequency, duration, and intensity of heatwaves, which will threaten health, ecosystems, infrastructure, livelihoods, and food supplies. The city is expected to experience an additional 1.6 months of extreme drought annually between 2040 and 2060, a 53% increase compared with 2000-2020. These droughts will affect health, hydroelectric energy production and urban agriculture.

15-year-old Ethiopian student wins second prize in China-Africa space painting competition

Abigail Berhanemeskel, a 15-year-old student at Andnet International School in #Addis¬Abeba, #Ethiopia, won second prize in the “My Dream” painting competition. The competition aimed to promote people-to-people exchanges and cooperation in space exploration between #China and #Africa.

Abigail’s artwork, noscriptd “Her Hope,” was one of 2,000 artworks created by African teenagers who expressed their dreams through their drawings. She explained that her painting portrays an Ethiopian girl who aspires to seize the opportunity, even though it is far away from her.

The prestigious competition saw the participation of 2,000 African youth from more than 40 countries. A total of 50 prizes, comprising 10 first prizes, 15 second prizes, and 25 third prizes, have been awarded in the first round of the competition.

Coffee firms won't be ready to comply with #EU deforestation law - report

A new report has revealed that most global coffee firms are not prepared to comply with the European Union's (EU) new law preventing the import of commodities linked to deforestation. This could have detrimental effects on small farmers, especially in countries like #Ethiopia.

The EU's law, which is set to take effect at the end of 2024, requires importers of commodities such as coffee, cocoa, beef, soy, rubber, and palm oil to prove that their goods are not contributing to forest destruction or face significant fines.

The report, called the coffee barometer, highlights the lack of preparedness among coffee firms, which may result in them sourcing from more developed regions like #Brazil that have better traceability. Ethiopian 787 Delhi to Addis Abeba makes an emergency landing

Flag carrier #EthiopianAirlines (ET) flight, operated by a #Boeing 787, made an emergency landing at #Delhi Airport (DEL) after the flight crew observed smoke in the cockpit. Ethiopian Airlines, #Africa's largest carrier, operates two daily flights between Delhi and Addis Abeba (ADD) and utilizes its widebody fleet, including Boeing 787-8, 787-9, and sometimes 777.

A passenger on the flight reported to PTI that the aircraft returned to the airport shortly after takeoff and performed an emergency landing. The passenger, who requested anonymity, stated, "There was smoke, and many passengers became anxious." According to sources, there were over 240 individuals on board the flight.

The ordeal of #Tigrayan women in #Ethiopia: 'Whether you shout or not, no one is going to come and rescue you'

At least 120,000 women were raped in Tigray during the war, according to Amnesty International. And almost a year after the peace agreement, the violence continues.

Ethiopian nationals arrested for kidnapping fellow countryman in South Africa

Two #Ethiopian nationals have been apprehended in Limpopo, #SouthAfrica, for allegedly kidnapping a 20-year-old man and demanding a ransom for his release. The victim was reportedly taken in the Giyani policing precinct on 09 September by his countrymen, who later demanded a substantial amount of R80,000 from his relatives.

The local police promptly launched an investigation and, with the assistance of several units, successfully arrested the suspects at Orange Farm, #Norwood. During the operation, seven cellphones were seized, and it was discovered that other Ethiopian nationals had also been kidnapped.

The victims were rescued without any ransom being paid. The two suspects are set to appear in court on charges of kidnapping.

#Djibouti inaugurates red sea power wind farm, bringing electricity to 38% of the population

Djibouti has taken a major step towards reducing power shortages and increasing domestic output by inaugurating the Red Sea Power wind farm project. Ethiopia's honey production has reached 98,000 tonnes this year, due to the success of the 'Bounty of the Basket' program. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has credited the program, launched a year ago, for the surge in production, which is almost double compared to last year's figure of 52,000 tonnes.
