‘Catastrophic’ shortage of medical supplies in
#GazaCity

The -#UK-based Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) group says hospitals in Gaza are facing a “catastrophic” shortage of medical supplies, amid Israel’s “total blockade”.

“Emergency, trauma and surgical supplies are rapidly running out at hospitals and health partners’ warehouses, with the entry of humanitarian supplies still not possible,” MAP’s Advocacy and Campaigns Manager in the West Bank, Aseel Baidoun, said.

“There is a shortage of blood. Medicine is in short supply.”

Baidoun added that there was also a shortage of healthcare workers, of whom several had been killed.

“The rest are exhausted not able to cope with the thousands of injuries they see every day. The Israeli air attacks have damaged 24 health facilities, including 16 hospitals and six other health facilities.”

#UNICEF pens deal to support #Ethiopia’s digital ID registration for children

Ethiopia's National ID Program (NIDP) is gaining traction in promoting its digital ID system through various partnership deals. The latest agreement has been made with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) country office in Ethiopia.

The UNICEF country director and the executive director of NIDP have recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to support the registration of all residents in the country for the digital ID scheme. According to UNICEF Ethiopia's Facebook page, this partnership aims to provide a unique digital identity to vulnerable beneficiaries, including children, enabling them to access essential services.

This collaboration with UNICEF follows another recent MoU between NIDP, the Refugees and Returnees Service (RRS), and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (#UNHCR). Under this agreement, NIDP will issue the national digital ID card (Fayda) to refugees and returnees in Ethiopia, as the country currently hosts over 900,000 refugees.

From #ubuntu to #gacaca: traditional justice could benefit #Ethiopia’s transition

Ethiopia has a wealth of traditional dispute-resolution mechanisms that help achieve reconciliation, mend fractured relationships and preserve communal harmony. Some are inter-ethnic in nature. Even in urban settings such as Addis Ababa’s Merkato, Ethiopia’s largest market, elders use traditional values and procedures to help resolve commercial disputes.

While there is limited acknowledgement in the constitution of their potential use to resolve family and personal disputes, the criminal justice system has, in practice, disregarded these traditional mechanisms altogether. This stems from the 1950s and ’60s when European experts overseeing the codification of Ethiopian laws purportedly omitted the traditions as incongruent with the modern legal system.

#IsraelPalestineConflict: Hundreds of Palestinians feared dead in #Gaza hospital blast, #Biden cancels meeting Arab leader

Following the blast at Gaza's Al Ahli hospital, a meeting between Joe Biden and Arab leaders - including Palestine's Mahmoud Abbas - was cancelled.

Biden had been due to head to Jordan after meeting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu; there he would've met King Abdullah of Jordan, President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi of Egypt and Abbas.

Hundreds of Palestinians are feared dead after a blast ripped through a hospital in Gaza on Tuesday night. Hamas blamed an Israeli air strike, whereas Israel says the blast was caused by rockets misfired by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad group, the second biggest militant group in the Gaza Strip.

In a tweet, Biden said he was "outraged and deeply saddened" by the blast - and directed his national security team to "continue gathering information about what exactly happened".

Video: Over the course of the last few days, major state run and party owned media outlets in #Ethiopia have upped the discussion on the need for Ethiopia’s direct access to sea outlet.

One of these broadcasts was aired on 16 October on the state owned EBC English program discussing how “the lack of direct coastal access to sea outlet stands out as a notable hindrance” for Ethiopia’s sustainable economic growth and its ambitions to become “a middle income country”, as well as develop its military, “specifically its navy force and exert influence in the region.”

The host explains efforts being undertaken under the leadership
of the incumbent to “rectify historical injustices and reclaim lost rights.”

The short program runs to a wrap with the host highlighting “the quest for an alternative sea outlet for Ethiopia becomes an unquestionable necessity, and not an option.” AS.
As Nations Mark #WorldFoodDay, Catholic Bishop In #Ethiopia Highlights Persistent Hunger

On 16 October, the globe rallied to mark the World Food Day, an annual awareness and action day against hunger and malnutrition, reminding of the importance of food security and access to nutritious food for all. It also addresses the importance of sustainable agriculture and food production.

Launched to celebrate the founding of the U.N’s food agency, the Food and Agricultural Organization, its main focus is that “no one should go to bed hungry.”
This year’s theme was “Water is Life. Water is food. Leave no one behind.”

This rings true in Tigray region in northern Ethiopia that is recovering from a deadly two years’ war. The conflict killed thousands and displaced millions into camps — making it impossible for farmers to produce food.

Bishop Tesfasellassie Medhin of Adigrat in Tigray said he wanted the world to know the situation in the region was still critical, and deaths were occurring due to serious food shortages and malnutrition.

“The situation is very bad. Many parts of the region experienced failed harvests due to drought, and food aid distribution had also stopped,” Bishop Medhin told OSV News in an interview ahead of World Food Day, observed annually.

#Somalia Rebuffs #Ethiopia’s Bid to Gain Direct Access to Red Sea Port

*Ethiopia has called for talks with neighbors on harbor access

*Somalia to retain control of strategic assets, minister says

Somalia rejected an appeal from Ethiopia to enter into negotiations with a view to granting it access to a Red Sea port.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed last week warned that his country’s lack of access to a harbor is a potential source of future conflict and called for efforts to address the issue in order to safeguard regional stability. Ethiopia lost its direct access to the sea in 1993 when Eritrea gained independence after a three-decade war.

How did #Arab governments react to the #Al_Ahli hospital strike that killed more than 500 Palestinians

The primacy of the Palestinian cause had been gradually fading among a number of Arab governments, although it was still stirring deep emotion among their citizens.

The #UAE, #Bahrain and #Morocco - which all recently normalised relations with Israel - issued strong condemnations when news of the blast emerged.

President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi of #Egypt - the first Arab country to make peace with Israel - described it as a "clear violation of international law".

#SaudiArabia, which has itself been inching towards a normalisation deal, called it a heinous crime.
