#In_Pictures: Delegation from across #Ethiopia arrives in #Mekelle for talks with #Tigray leadership

A high-level delegation of more than 50 prominent Ethiopians from the country’s 12 regional states and two chartered cities arrived in Mekelle earlier today as part of renewed efforts to advance peace and reconciliation.

The delegation, which includes elders, Aba Gadas, and members of the business community, was welcomed at Mekelle’s Alula Aba Nega Airport by Amanuel Assefa, Vice President of the Tigray Interim Administration. The group has since begun discussions with President Lt. Gen. Tadesse Werede and members of his cabinet.

Officials say the delegation will also engage with political, religious, and civil society leaders in the region to promote national unity and bridge lingering divides. This marks the second peace mission to Tigray this month. On 16 July, a joint delegation of religious leaders from Addis Abeba and Tigray held talks with regional authorities, including President Tadesse.

#Israel committing #genocide in #Gaza, say Israel-based human rights groups

Two leading human rights organisations based in Israel, B’Tselem and Physicians for Human Rights, say Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza and the country’s western allies have a legal and moral duty to stop it.

In reports published on Monday, the two groups said Israel had targeted civilians in Gaza only because of their identity as Palestinians over nearly two years of war, causing severe and in some cases irreparable damage to Palestinian society.

Multiple international and Palestinian groups have already described the war as genocidal, but reports from two of Israel-Palestine’s most respected human rights organisations, who have for decades documented systemic abuses, is likely to add to pressure for action.

The reports detailed crimes including the killing of tens of thousands of women, children and elderly people, mass forced displacement and starvation, and the destruction of homes and civilian infrastructure that have deprived Palestinians of healthcare, education and other basic rights.

“What we see is a clear, intentional attack on civilians in order to destroy a group,” said Yuli Novak, the director of B’Tselem, calling for urgent action. “I think every human being has to ask himself: what do you do in the face of genocide?”

#Op_ed: #UN Food Systems Summit: Golden opportunity to transform lives in #Ethiopia

As global leaders gather in Addis Abeba for the Second UN Food Systems Summit (#UNFSS), Zlatan Milišić, the World Food Programme (#WFP) Representative and Country Director for Ethiopia, states that the event offers a "golden opportunity" to confront the escalating global hunger crisis, exacerbated by conflicts, climate change, and diminishing aid. He emphasizes that "This moment also presents an opportunity—for Ethiopia and for the world—to chart a new course from crisis to resilience."

Milišić explains that Ethiopia is working toward establishing a food system that is “climate-smart, nutrition-sensitive, and rooted in both innovation and indigenous knowledge” by 2030. He underlines that "the WFP supports this vision," actively "engaged in strengthening systems that enable Ethiopians to become food-secure on their own terms." This commitment, according to the article, includes assisting over 1.5 million Ethiopians in enhancing food production, gaining market access, and securing insurance. Furthermore, it involves proactive measures such as providing early warnings and support to mitigate the impact of impending crises.

With food systems now a national and global priority, Milišić urges partners to commit to sustainable investments. At the summit, WFP will champion two critical objectives: "transforming food systems in fragile and conflict-affected areas" and "unlocking sustainable investment in homegrown school meals." He underscores that "The transformation we seek will not be achieved through short-term projects—it requires systems thinking, political will, and investment in people."

#Somalia: Heavy clashes erupt in #Dolow between #Jubaland forces and Somali federal troops

Fierce fighting broke out overnight and into Monday morning between forces belonging to the Jubbaland regional administration and troops aligned with Somalia's federal government in the border town of Dolow, local sources and officials said.

In a statement, Jubbaland accused federal- aligned troops of launching a surprise attack on its military positions in the town, which lies on the border with Ethiopia in Somalia's Gedo region. The regional administration claimed its forces had repelled the assault and taken control of several key government facilities.

Independent sources in Doolow confirmed that Jubbaland forces had seized a number of strategic locations in the town, though the full extent of casualties and damage remains unclear.

Somalia's federal government has not yet commented on the incident.

The clashes come amid a visit by Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to Ethiopia, a trip that has further heightened political and security tensions in the volatile Gedo region. Disputes over control and troop deployment in the area have long been a flashpoint between the federal government and regional authorities, particularly Jubbaland.

The renewed fighting also comes as the militant group Al-Shabaab gains ground in central Somalia, capturing new areas in the Hiiraan region.

The concurrent developments have raised fresh concerns about coordination and focus in Somalia's broader counter-insurgency efforts.

#Taiwan representative office in #Hargeisa rebukes #China over “false claims” on cooperation with #Somaliland

The Taiwan Representative Office in Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland, has issued a strongly worded statement rejecting accusations made by the Chinese Embassy in Somalia, calling Beijing’s claims “false” and its conduct “bullying” intended to destabilize the Horn of Africa.

The statement, released on Monday, came in response to China’s criticism of a recently signed Taiwan–Somaliland Coast Guard Agreement and a diplomatic visit by Somaliland’s Foreign Minister, Abdirahman Dahir Osman, to Taipei.

“This multilateral platform helps pursue the strategic goal of a Non-Red Somaliland Coastline for the foundation of a Blue Economy,” the Taiwan office said, emphasizing its commitment to deepen coordination with the United States, United Kingdom, European Union, and other regional and global partners.

#Opinion: The #Nile cannot be governed by #colonial-era treaties

In this opinion piece for Al Jazeera, Jafar Bedru Geletu, Executive Director of Ethiopia’s Institute of Foreign Affairs, argues that Nile water governance must move beyond outdated colonial-era treaties that exclude upstream countries like Ethiopia. He defends the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) as a vital, equitable development project and urges Egypt and Sudan to adopt the Cooperative Framework Agreement, which promotes fair, modern, and inclusive management of the Nile Basin.

Jafar notes that the 1929 and 1959 water-sharing treaties—signed without Ethiopia’s involvement—grant Egypt and Sudan near-exclusive control over the Nile’s flow, despite the fact that 86 percent of the river’s water originates in Ethiopia. He argues that invoking these agreements under the guise of “historic rights” perpetuates inequality and undermines the sovereignty of other riparian states.

He further explains that the GERD, constructed solely through domestic resources, is a response to Ethiopia’s chronic energy deficit, with over 40 percent of the population lacking access to electricity. The dam, once fully operational, is expected to double the country’s energy output and serve as a catalyst for industrialization, regional integration, and economic transformation.

Despite objections from downstream states, Jafar maintains that the GERD does not threaten water availability. “Its very function—generating electricity—requires the continuous flow of water downstream,” he writes, adding that lower riparian countries also stand to benefit through reduced flooding and improved water regulation.

The author concludes that the Nile must be governed through an inclusive, cooperative framework—such as the Cooperative Framework Agreement (CFA)—that reflects the shared aspirations and equal rights of all Nile Basin countries. Failing to do so, he warns, risks entrenching outdated hierarchies and obstructing the region’s collective future.

After more than three decades of dormancy, Somali Airlines is poised for a remarkable comeback. The Somali government recently announced the acquisition of two Airbus A320 aircraft, marking a significant step toward reviving the national carrier.

This move signals Somalia’s ambition to restore its aviation sector and reestablish its presence in the skies. Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre’s office finalized the agreement, and Transport and Civil Aviation Minister Mohamed Farah Nuuh confirmed the deal.

Somali Airlines will launch flights with the new aircraft from Mogadishu within two months, proudly reviving the once iconic brand.

This milestone is something of a beacon of progress for a nation which is rebuilding after many years of challenges.

#Commentary: Purity and Power: #Sidama politics still shackled by old ideologies

The Sidama people, known for their distinct cultural identity, gained regional statehood in 2019 after years of struggle. However, the author of this commentary argues that the region's political landscape remains deeply influenced by centuries-old systems—most notably, Wolapho, an ideology of "ritual purity" that determined an individual's access to power, resources, and social status based on their "lineage and clan." He writes, "In modern Sidama politics, Wolapho continues to manifest through favoritism, exclusion, and discrimination, despite the democratic rhetoric adopted by many political parties operating in the region."

The author explains that this ideology, rooted in the 17th century, "evolved from a traditional purification process into a rigid political hierarchy," with the Yemericho clan at the top, while others such as the Hadicho, Aleta, and Hoffa were categorized as "unpurified." He further elaborates that "over time, the political landscape shifted as the Aleta clan challenged the Yemericho," leading to an alliance, while the Hadicho and Hoffa "remained excluded" from this purity-based hierarchy system.

According to the article, several political parties in Sidama, despite their stated goals, continue to uphold this ongoing division in this modern age. The Sidama Liberation Movement (#SLM), for instance, includes "Wolaphote" (purification) in its name, reflecting “a lingering attachment to exclusionary tribal ideology. The Sidama People's Democratic Organization (#SPDO), formed under the #EPRDF, also "institutionalized division by adopting the divisive ideology." Despite its integration-focused Medemer philosophy, the Prosperity Party has struggled to implement real change, as "local appointments and resource distribution continue to reflect ancestral hierarchies."

The author emphasizes that "the persistence of purification (Wolapho) ideology across Sidama's political spectrum represents more than historical curiosity; it constitutes a fundamental barrier to democratic governance and comprehensive development." For genuine change, he urges political parties to "explicitly reject purification ideology by publicly renouncing tribal hierarchies and establishing internal safeguards against tribal favoritism."

After backing #Ethiopia’s quest for #sea access, #Belarus President signals deepening ties with Addis Abeba on #political, #economic fronts

Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko pledged his country’s commitment to deepening bilateral ties with Ethiopia, expressing strong “political and economic interest” in expanding cooperation across multiple sectors.

During a meeting in Minsk with Ethiopia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gedion Timothewos today, President Lukashenko spoke of the historical significance of the relationship and Belarus’ readiness to offer technological, agricultural, and engineering support.

“Ethiopia is one of the most important countries in East Africa for us,” he said, citing mutual benefits and a shared Soviet-era legacy as the foundation for future collaboration.

In October, the Belarusian leader voiced strong support for Ethiopia’s ambition to secure access to the sea.

The Belarusian Telegraph Agency (BelTA) quoted Lukashenko as saying that those who oppose Ethiopia’s maritime access were “complete fools,” adding, “through war or through negotiations, Ethiopia will still reach the sea. It is better, of course, through peaceful means.”

Analysis: Why #Somali Region’s controversial restructuring triggers widespread backlash and memories of unresolved border dispute with #Oromia

A controversial administrative overhaul by the Somali Regional State Council, involving the creation of 14 new woredas and four new zonal administrations, has sparked widespread protests and fierce political backlash.

A senior Somali official tells Addis Standard the changes are “strictly internal” and are about service delivery and governance, not land grabbing.

But the Somali region claim is increasingly met with grassroots resistance from Oromia and Somali regions.

Demonstrations erupted in multiple towns across Borana and Afder zones in the two regions; protesters in Oromia region say the move will enable Somali region’s encroachment especially into the Borana land, Somali region protesters fear the move favors the leaderships’ “clan fiefdoms” and is done “without proper consultations.”

The push back from opposition parties is no less. The Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) denounced the move as a “declaration of war” and an “unlawful occupation” of Oromo land, while the Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) accused the Somali government of “gerrymandering” and deepening inter-ethnic divides. The Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) went further, framing the restructuring as part of a federal strategy to divide and destabilize. A former cabinet minister called it “a dangerous precedent.”

Amid the protests and criticisms from all directions, the Oromia regional government has remained notably silent.

But Haji Godana Kulu, a local representative of a Oromia regional council, agrees with critics. In an interview with Addis Standard, he warned the decision undermines the ongoing work of the Oromia–Somali border commission.

As memories of the 2004 unresolved border referendum and the mid-2010s deadly clashes in border areas of the two regions resurface, fears of renewed inter-communal conflict are mounting.

#UK to recognise state of #Palestine in September unless #Israel holds to a ceasefire

The UK will formally recognise the state of Palestine this September as a result of the “increasingly intolerable” situation on the ground in Gaza, unless Israel abides by a ceasefire and commits to a two-state solution in the Middle East.

Keir Starmer’s cabinet has agreed a roadmap for peace in the region after coming under intense domestic pressure over the mounting humanitarian crisis in the territory, and calls to follow France in acknowledging statehood.

The prime minister recalled his cabinet from their summer break to approve the plan after holding talks with Donald Trump in Scotland. The US president said the issue had not come up, but that he did “not mind” the UK taking a position, even if he would not.

Starmer told his ministers that, because of the catastrophic situation on the ground in Gaza and the diminishing prospect of reaching a two-state solution, now was the right time to finally move.

“Ultimately, the only way to bring this humanitarian crisis to an end is through a long-term settlement,” he told reporters. “Our goal remains a safe and secure Israel alongside a viable and sovereign Palestinian state, but right now, that goal is under pressure like never before.”

He added: “I have always said that we will recognise a Palestinian state as a contribution to a proper peace process, at the moment of maximum impact for the two-state solution. With that solution now under threat, this is the moment to act.”

UN-backed experts said a “worst-case scenario of famine” was playing out in Gaza as the World Food Programme (WFP) described the hunger crisis in the territory as the worst seen this century, comparing it to previous famines in #Ethiopia and #Biafra. Israel has denied its actions in Gaza have caused famine.

It came as the death toll from Israeli attacks in the war passed 60,000 people according to Gaza health ministry figures, almost half of them women and children.

Israel has repeatedly limited aid trucks reaching Gaza during 22 months of war, and halted shipments entirely for six weeks at the start of the war, and between March and mid-May this year.

Massive #earthquake off #Russian coast sparks #tsunami warnings across #Pacific

An 8.8-magnitude earthquake off the eastern coast of Russia set off multiple tsunamis in the northern Pacific early Wednesday, with authorities from Hawaii to New Zealand issuing warnings. The quake was recorded as the world's strongest since the shock that caused meltdowns at a Japan nuclear power plant in 2011.

One of the world's strongest earthquakes struck Russia's Far East early Wednesday, an 8.8-magnitude temblor that set off a tsunami in the northern Pacific region and prompted warnings for Alaska, Hawaii and other coasts south toward New Zealand.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said a tsunami had been generated by the quake that could cause damage along the coastlines of all the Hawaiian islands.
