#South_Sudan rejects reports of plan to resettle #Palestinians from #Gaza

South Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has firmly denied recent media claims that the government is engaged in talks with #Israel to resettle Palestinians from Gaza in the country.

In a statement issued Wednesday, 13 August, the ministry described the reports as “baseless” and said they do not represent “the official position or policy of the Government of South Sudan.” It urged media outlets to “exercise due diligence” and verify information through official channels before publication.

The denial comes after multiple outlets in the past 24 hours reported that Israel is in discussions with South Sudan over the possible relocation of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip - part of what the reports described as a broader Israeli effort to facilitate mass emigration from the territory, devastated by a 22-month military offensive against Hamas.

#Ethiopia: Over 3,000 armed men lay down arms in a single zone in #Amhara region in #July alone, officials claim

Authorities in Amhara regional state claim more than 3,000 armed individuals have disarmed in just one month in the North Shoa Zone alone.

Yidesetu Kefetew, head of the North Shoa Zone peace and security office, told state media that 3,155 former combatants “accepted the peace call, disarmed, and returned to normal life” in July.

He said the individuals had been active in areas where “extremist groups” had been operating, though he did not name the groups or explain what led to such a surge in surrenders.

According to Yidesetu, many of those who laid down arms expressed regret for acts that disrupted community life, including “destroying government and public institutions, blocking roads, preventing children from attending school, obstructing access to health services, and hindering the provision of public services.”

#Sudan: #UN rejects #RSF plans to form rival government in #Sudan

The UN Security Council on Wednesday rejected plans by Sudan’s paramilitary group to establish a rival government in areas it controls, warning that the move threatens the country’s territorial integrity and risks further exacerbating the ongoing civil war.

The strongly worded statement by the UN’s most powerful body "unequivocally reaffirmed" its unwavering commitment to Sudan’s sovereignty, independence and unity. Any steps to undermine these principles "threaten not only the future of Sudan but also the peace and stability of the broader region," the statement said.

The 15-member council said the announcement by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces also risks "fragmenting the country and worsening an already dire humanitarian situation."

#US sets timeline to probe #Kenya’s non-NATO ally status over China ties, terror links

The United States has mapped out the expected timeline it will follow to probe Kenya on its alleged involvement with al-Shabaab and its non-North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) ally status.

According to the Congressional Record Vol. 171, Senator James Risch submitted an amendment to authorize appropriations for military activities of the Department of Defense, for military construction, and for defense activities of the Department of Energy, to prescribe military personnel strengths for the 2026 fiscal year.

Upon the enactment of the Act, the Secretary of State, in coordination with the Secretary of Defense, the Treasury and the Director of National Intelligence (DNI), shall commence a review of the major non-NATO status of Kenya, conferred on June 24, 2024, not later than 90 days.

Likewise, a classified report shall be submitted to the appropriate committees of Congress on the findings of the review not later than 180 days after the Act's enactment.

The report will include an assessment of Kenya's relationship with the U.S. in countering violent extremism, maintaining peace and security in Sub-Saharan Africa, and in Haiti, as a United Nations peacekeeping troop contributing country, and as an economic partner.

It will also include a detailed denoscription of Kenya's military, security, political and financial relationship with China, Russia, and Iran, including any engagements, agreements, or joint activities since June 24, 2024.

#Ethiopia launches #UN-backed initiative to combat child wasting crisis affecting above 11% #children under five

Ethiopia has launched a five-year multisectoral drive to combat child wasting, one of the country’s most urgent yet under-addressed public health threats, amid mounting evidence of worsening malnutrition, which now “affects more than 11% of Ethiopian children under five”, up from the 7.68% prevalence recorded in the 2019 Ethiopian Mini Demographic and Health Survey.

The current push for prevention follows a series of grim assessments exacerbated by the multiple security crises and drought-induced food insecurity Ethiopia witnessed between the 2019 Mini Demographic and Health Survey and now.

The Global Nutrition Cluster, warned that acute malnutrition rates in several regions had “surpassed the critical threshold of 15%.” Stabilization centers reported the highest mortality rates in Gambella, Benishangul Gumuz, and Southwest Ethiopia…

#Ethiopian fossils reveal new species in human #evolutionary lineage

Researchers have unearthed tooth fossils in Ethiopia dating to about 2.65 million years ago of a previously unknown species in the human evolutionary lineage, one that lived in the same time and place as the earliest-known member of the genus Homo to which our own species belongs.

The scientists discovered in the Ledi-Geraru research project area of northeastern Ethiopia's Afar Region 10 teeth - six molars, two incisors, one premolar and one canine - that they concluded belonged to a new Australopithecus species. The teeth came from two individuals.

Until now, six species of the genus Australopithecus, an important early human ancestor that displayed a mix of ape-like and human-like traits, were known from fossils at various African sites.

#Ethiopia: #MP mocks glaring disparity in officials’ claims on number of armed men who disarmed in #Amhara’s #North_Shoa Zone

MP Desalegn Chanie (PhD) has ridiculed conflicting claims by two senior officials from Amhara region’s North Shoa Zone on the number of armed men who recently “surrendered.” On 13 August, zonal peace and security chief Yidesetu Kefetew said 3,155 had laid down arms in July alone. Hours later, Prosperity Party’s North Shoa Zone head Elias Abebe put the figure at “more than 1,300” since the start of July.

Desalegn compared the figures to haggling in Addis Abeba’s Merkato: “Yidesetu and Elias are cabinet members in the same zone. Yet their numbers are like a Merkato merchant quoting prices with and without VAT. Is Yidesetu’s with VAT and Elias’s without?”

The MP, from the National Movement of Amhara (NaMA), said peace remains elusive amid “endless civil war, conflicts, displacements, and a skyrocketing cost of living,” urging officials to at least coordinate before announcing such contradictory numbers within minutes of each other. “No one would hate it if genuine peace came,” he said.

In June this year, Army Chief of Staff Field Marshal Birhanu Jula told lawmakers that “90% of operations in Amhara region have been completed”,with the remaining 10% underway to “free the region from extremist armed groups.”

However, Amhara regional state communication bureau has in recent weeks been reporting a series of similar stories about thousands of armed militants who it claimed are “surrendering” across the region that has been experiencing armed conflict involving government forces and the different groups of Fano armed militants for the last two years.

#Ethiopia: Opposition parties in #Tigray dispute Dialogue Commission’s claim of progress in engagement

The National Dialogue Commission says it has made progress in Tigray following a visit to the region and meetings with the interim administration’s leadership, political parties, civic associations, and members of Tigray’s public diplomacy.

Opposition parties, however, dispute the commission’s account, denying that such talks took place and expressing deep skepticism about the dialogue process amid what they call unresolved political questions.

“The people of Tigray still face unresolved critical political issues. Dialogue cannot move forward until constitutional order is fully restored, and any such process must be conducted by a legitimately elected government that represents the Tigrayan nation and speaks on its behalf,” Tigrai Independence Party chairman Dejen Mezgebe told Addis Standard.

Alula Hailu, chairman of Salsay Weyane Tigray, voiced similar frustrations. “They don’t care about the legitimate questions we have been raising for a long time. They just want to proceed and ensure Tigray is included when they draft a constitutional amendment,” he said.

#Jubaland accuses #Somali federal government of fomenting conflict in #Gedo following deadly clashes

The Jubaland regional administration issued a strongly worded statement Wednesday, accusing Somalia’s federal government and security officials of instigating recent deadly clashes in the western district of Beledxaawo, Gedo region, which left several Jubaland soldiers and officers dead.

In the statement from the Jubaland Ministry of Information, the administration blamed President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Gedo security chief Abdirashid Janan for fueling violence and destabilizing the region. Jubaland further accused the federal government of pursuing a deliberate plan to weaken or dismantle the regional administration.

“The Jubaland government reaffirms its firm commitment to resist any attempts aimed at undermining the Jubaland administration and the federal system of Somalia, which remains the main target of the accused Hassan Sheikh Mohamud,” the statement said.

#Oromia regional #security chief vows to intensify operations against armed groups

The Oromia regional state Peace and Security Bureau has announced plans to further intensify coordinated operations against armed groups, while extending offers of amnesty to those willing to lay down arms and return to civilian life.

Commissioner General Ararsa Merdasa, head of the regional Security and Administration Bureau, told state media that joint efforts by federal and regional security forces, in collaboration with local communities, have “contributed to improved security in the region”, which has endured years of instability.

Ararsa said the coordinated measures taken at all levels have yielded “satisfactory results,” with some members of armed groups “surrendering and reintegrating into society”. He added that the improved security climate has enabled economic and social activities to “resume across all zones of Oromia.”

Legesse Tulu says #Ethiopia’s ‘#Red_Sea journey more than halfway done’, urges #media to counter ‘fabricated narratives’

Speaking at the launch of the EBC mobile app on Wednesday, Minister of Government Communication Services Legesse Tulu (PhD) said Ethiopia’s economy has been “growing at a high rate for the past seven years in a resilient manner,” while “building human capital, cultivating a new generation, and promoting kindness.”

However, he warned that Ethiopia’s “good image and positive activities are being tarnished by deliberately fabricated information from various sources,” and called the campaign “a massive propaganda effort” waged by “historical enemies” with the help of “internal collaborators.”

With “a few days left” for the completion of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) and the “Red Sea journey more than halfway done,” Legesse urged: “Ethiopian media and digital platforms must work together to enhance Ethiopia’s image and debunk deliberately fabricated narratives.”

#Somaliland hails #US Senator Ted Cruz’s call for Trump to recognize independence

Somaliland leaders have hailed U.S. Senator Ted Cruz’s call for U.S. President Donald Trump to recognize Somaliland’s independence, calling it a “major boost” to their decades-long quest for recognition.

In a letter to Trump, Cruz praised Somaliland as “a critical security and diplomatic partner for the United States” and urged the administration to “grant it that recognition,” citing its strategic Gulf of Aden location, strong armed forces, and counterterrorism contributions.

Foreign Minister Abdirahman Dahir Adam expressed “heartfelt thanks” to Cruz for championing Somaliland’s cause, saying it reflected “a deep appreciation of what we contribute to the U.S. and the World.”

Ismail Ahmed, founder of global money transfer service #WorldRemit, compared the move to “Trump’s Panama Canal Moment,” noting Somaliland could give the U.S. “exclusive access to Berbera’s port & 4km airfield” in a vital global corridor.

The appeal comes as Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi Irro prepares for an official visit to the U.S. to meet senior government officials, members of Congress, and policy experts. According to the foreign minister, talks will focus on deepening bilateral relations, enhancing economic cooperation, and addressing Horn of Africa security challenges.

The trip is seen as part of a growing diplomatic push to secure long-sought international recognition.

African Union urges adoption of world map showing continent's true size

The African Union has backed a campaign to end the use by governments and international organisations of the 16th-century Mercator map of the world in favour of one that more accurately displays Africa's size.

Created by cartographer Gerardus Mercator for navigation, the projection distorts continent sizes, enlarging areas near the poles like North America and Greenland while shrinking Africa and South America.

"It might seem to be just a map, but in reality, it is not," AU Commission deputy chairperson Selma Malika Haddadi told Reuters, saying the Mercator fostered a false impression that Africa was "marginal", despite being the world's second-largest continent by area, with 54 nations and over a billion people.

Such stereotypes influence media, education and policy, she said.

Criticism of the Mercator map is not new, but the 'Correct The Map' campaign led by advocacy groups Africa No Filter and Speak Up Africa has revived the debate, urging organisations to adopt the 2018 Equal Earth projection, which tries to reflect countries' true sizes.

#OLA welcomes #US State Department rights report, calls for independent #investigation into alleged atrocities

The Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) has welcomed the 2024 U.S. State Department Country Report on Human Rights Practices in Ethiopia, calling for impartial, internationally-mandated investigations into all alleged atrocities and urging the U.S. to reconsider its support for the Ethiopian government.

In a statement released on 13 August 2025, the OLA said the report “once again corroborates the lived experiences of our people over the past seven years: systematic terror, state-orchestrated brutality, and entrenched impunity.”

Addressing the report’s limited references to the OLA, the group asserted that credible independent investigations — including those by Reuters and The Washington Post — have shown that many alleged crimes attributed to the OLA were instead carried out by government forces or state-sponsored imposters. The OLA reiterated its willingness to cooperate fully with independent investigations into all allegations.

#Ethiopian Social-Democratic Party elects Rahel Bafe as chairperson, #removes four executive members

The Ethiopian Social-Democratic Party (ESDP) has elected Rahel Bafe (PhD) as its new chairperson, replacing the late Professor Beyene Petros, and banned four executive members accused of “plotting to divide the party, spreading false information, and exploiting the leadership vacuum for personal gain” from serving in any leadership position.

The party said the meeting reviewed Ethiopia’s current political and security landscape, the positioning of opposition parties, and the opportunities and challenges ahead of the polls. It expressed readiness to form coalitions with ideologically aligned groups and urged the government to prioritize ceasefire agreements with armed actors, including unilateral measures where necessary.

#Somali Salvation Forum says talks with federal government yield no agreement

Somali Salvation Forum has stated that its recent series of meetings with federal government leaders over the past weeks did not produce any agreement that would alter the political, security, or electoral situation in the country.

In a statement released on Thursday, the political group — which comprises the country’s main opposition figures, including former president and prime ministers — did not specify whether the talks had officially collapsed or if they would resume discussions with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

The Forum called for the inclusion of Puntland and Jubbaland regional states in the national dialogue to secure a comprehensive agreement on direct, transparent, and mutually agreed elections.

"The agreement that would have given hope to the people and saved them from political chaos has unfortunately not been reached," the statement read.

The group also urged an immediate solution to the nine months remaining in the president's term through direct elections, as outlined in previous agreements. It further called for an immediate end to the government-led conflict within the country, particularly in the Gedo region.

Displaced people in #Amhara region shelters allege #threats of land confiscation over unpaid #taxes by officials in #Oromia

Displaced people from Oromia’s East Wollega and West Shewa zones, now sheltering in camps in the Amhara region, say they have been told their land will be “confiscated” if they do not pay taxes on property they abandoned during conflict. Many fled in 2020 and 2022, losing homes, businesses, and farmland, and say they are surviving on aid.

Several displaced individuals told Addis Standard they were contacted by local officials or relatives in their home areas, urging them to pay taxes to avoid losing land. Some reported paying thousands of birr from humanitarian assistance, while others said they could not afford the demands. “How can we pay taxes when we are living by begging for flour?” one father of seven in China Camp asked.

Kiramu woreda Deputy Administrator Alebachew Waysa acknowledged that paying taxes proves land ownership but denied threats of confiscation and said displaced people in shelters were not asked to pay. He promised to investigate any directives issued to the contrary. The accounts were collected by Addis Standard on 15 August 2025.

#Ethiopian Electric Utility says over 25,000 power outage issues identified in #Addis_Abeba

The Ethiopian Electric Utility (EEU) has announced that more than 25,000 problems related to power outages have been identified in the capital, of which 54% have been resolved.

Addressing concerns about persistent power outages, Engineer Getu Geremew, EEU CEO, acknowledged that the problem remains significant. Responding to a media question on the recent electricity tariff adjustment and criticism that it does not adequately consider low-income households, he said, “Ethiopia has the lowest tariff in the world; the increase made is also moderate.” He noted that the adjustment was implemented once but spread over four years, with consideration given to low-income communities.

The CEO also pointed to security challenges in northern and western Ethiopia in recent years, which, he said, had hindered the utility’s operations and required billions of birr in replacement works.

He added that 155 rural kebeles and villages were provided with electricity and that 501,588 new customers were connected. The EEU also replaced 53,714 old energy meters with modern smart meters. The total number of customers now stands at over 5.2 million.

#Ethiopia #gold & copper project moves ahead for #Askari Metals

Askari Metals Ltd earlier this week confirmed that it has secured validation of all three exploration licenses for the Nejo Gold and Copper Project in Ethiopia. Askari Metals CEO Gino D’Anna talked with Proactive about the company securing all official licenses.

The company said the validation followed legal due diligence and meetings with the regional government and the Ethiopian Ministry of Mines. It said this milestone gives it confidence to proceed with the acquisition process.

D'Anna highlighted that the final step in the acquisition is shareholder approval. Once granted, it plans to mobilise its team to begin exploration work.

Askari is considering a strategic collaboration with Shining Star International. D'Anna said the potential partner has both the technical expertise and financial capacity to invest in large-scale mining projects, citing its current work on a copper mine in Angola.
The company outlined plans for an immediate work program involving sampling, trenching, and drilling. It will first target the Cattle prospect in the north, where previous limited drilling intersected high-grade copper. Work will include locating historical drill holes, taking samples, mapping, and designing a drill program.

The southern license area will also be explored, with a focus on validating historical drilling results from as recently as 2013. Askari said these early-stage campaigns will support the design of its maiden drill program, which is expected to commence in October.
