News: #Ethiopia’s EV drive gains momentum despite power, infrastructure challenges

Ethiopians are increasingly turning to electric vehicles (#EVs) as part of the country’s green transition, despite persistent challenges in infrastructure and power supply.

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), Africa accounted for just one percent of global EV sales in 2024, but Ethiopia is attempting to shift the trend. In what officials described as a world first, the government last year banned the import of petrol and diesel cars, citing both environmental ambitions and the need to reduce reliance on costly fuel imports.

The policy has been welcomed by many, yet it has also exposed shortcomings in Ethiopia’s capacity to sustain a rapid transition.

#Mogadishu ‘never been more secure’ in last decade than today, says #Somalia’s deputy premier

The Somali capital of Mogadishu has never been more secure in the last decade than today, despite its forces still fighting terrorists, said the East African country’s deputy prime minister.

Speaking with Anadolu, Salah Ahmed Jama said the number of incidents in the country has significantly decreased, and Mogadishu's security has greatly improved despite the fight against the al-Shabaab terrorist organization.

“But the challenge remains. The Somali armed forces and security forces at various levels, in collaboration with our international partners, from the Americans, Türkiye, the African Union, and many others, are certainly improving the security of the country,” Jama said, adding: “And the Somali people have shown a great deal of resilience and strength in fighting off one of the most potent terrorist groups in the world.”

He noted that the long-debated direct election system based on the principle of “one person, one vote” is one of the goals long desired by the Somali people.

#South_Sudan to repatriate 27 prisoners held in #Ethiopia

South Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs says it is working with Ethiopian authorities to repatriate 27 nationals detained at Muzan Prison in Addis Abeba.

Speaking at the ministry’s weekly media briefing, spokesperson Amb. Apuk Ayuel Mayen said the detainees are cattle herders from Eastern Equatoria State who unintentionally crossed the international border. “The ministry is coordinating the safe return of 27 youth from Eastern Equatoria State who are currently detained in Muzan prison in Ethiopia,” Apuk stated.

“They were cattle herders, so they were armed. And they faced detention on the other side. And so, through our embassy in Addis Ababa, we are negotiating with the government of Ethiopia for their release,” she added.

#Opinion: Managing Scarcity, Dreaming Abundance: #Ethiopia’s struggle to rise beyond survival

Every society defines its challenges through the lens of either scarcity or abundance, writes Eyob Yohannes, the author of this opinion piece. In Ethiopia, he notes, the struggle is defined by scarcity and survival, with pressing issues such as inflation, food insecurity, and conflict dominating public life. By contrast, problems in Western nations—shaped by conditions of abundance—often revolve around climate ethics, gender identity, and animal rights, concerns that emerge only once survival is secured.

The author contends that although initiatives such as Unity Park, the Green Legacy campaign, the Museum of Art and Science, and the Corridor Development Project are “controversial” with domestic institutions “mirroring this tension,” they represent an effort to expand Ethiopia’s imagination toward “what could be” and to “shift the narrative away from survival into abundance.” However, Eyob states that Ethiopia’s ability to redefine its challenges is not determined internally alone. Western institutions—the #IMF, #World_Bank, and donor governments—reinforce scarcity through loans, debt conditions, and sanctions. “In this way, Western institutions become curators of Ethiopia’s problems—deciding what the government must prioritize and ensuring that survival concerns remain permanently on the table.”

The author argues that despite their flaws, the current administration's projects are "attempts to bridge this gap." He emphasizes, however, that "unless Ethiopia gains structural independence from Western financial constraints and reforms its institutions to think beyond crisis management, imagination will collapse under the weight of survival." Eyob concludes, “If survival chains us to the present, imagination is the bridge to a future worth inhabiting.”

#US launches 76th #Somalia strike of 2025, targeting #ISIS in #Puntland’s Golis Mountains

U.S. Africa Command said it carried out an airstrike against ISIS-Somalia in Puntland’s Golis Mountains on Sept. 10, in coordination with Somalia’s federal government.

The strike marked the 76th U.S. strike in Somalia this year, the highest annual total on record.

AFRICOM described the target area as the Golis (also known as Al-Madow) range in northeastern Somalia, a rugged stronghold where the faction has used caves and steep terrain to shelter fighters and stage operations. The geography has made the area a recurring focus of air and partner-ground actions.

The disclosure came a day after the command announced a Sept. 9 strike against al-Shabaab in Lower Shabelle. The tempo of operations highlights a dual-front campaign: U.S. strikes are hitting al-Shabaab in southern Somalia while simultaneously backing Somali and Puntland forces against ISIS-Somalia in the northeast.

Long-range 'kamikaze' drones seen near #RSF base could worsen conflict in #Sudan

More than a dozen long-range kamikaze drones seen near an airport controlled by Sudan's Rapid Support Forces during a major air assault on army territory in May indicate the paramilitaries have new weapons that could alter the course of the war.

The conflict between the RSF and Sudan's army has created the world's worst humanitarian crisis over the past two-and-a-half years, drawing in myriad foreign interests, and threatening to fragment the strategic Red Sea country, a major gold producer.

Images and analyses shared by the Yale Humanitarian Research Lab and verified by Reuters showed 13 "delta-wing" drones alongside launching gear near Nyala airport in Sudan's western Darfur region on May 6 this year.

Such drones, which are designed to crash into their targets, typically have a range of about 2,000 km (1,200 miles), a range that would reach anywhere in Sudan and far further than any other models the RSF was previously known to possess.

Addis Abeba – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has expressed strong solidarity with #Qatar following the Israeli airstrike on Doha on 9 September 2025, which targeted Hamas leaders as they were meeting to discuss a U.S.-brokered ceasefire deal.

In a phone call with Qatar’s Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, Abiy said the attack was “a flagrant violation of all international laws and norms” and “a serious threat to the security of the State of Qatar and the countries of the region.” He offered condolences for “the martyrs who were killed in the treacherous attack,” the official readout by the State of Qatar said.

PM Abiy also commended to role of Qatar “in resolving conflicts and mediating efforts around the world.”

The Somali National Army (SNA), supported by local forces, repelled a major al-Shabaab assault in El-Dheer district, killing more than 60 militants and wounding over 50 others, officials confirmed.

Somalia’s Minister of Defense, Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, said the attack took place before dawn and resulted in heavy losses for al-Shabaab. “The enemy’s death toll has surpassed 60, with over 50 others wounded in the failed assault,” he said, adding that several militants were captured alive, reports SONNA.

Among those killed were two senior al-Shabaab leaders, identified as Daadullah and Sabir, according to an official statement. Minister Fiqi said the militants were forced to retreat, leaving many of their dead behind.

The SNA and allied local forces have continued operations up to 20 kilometers outside the district to pursue fleeing militants.

#Ethiopia: #Tigray Interim President calls revocation of #TPLF’s legal status “unacceptable,” urges political settlement

Tigray Interim President Lt. Gen. Tadesse Werede has called #NEBE’s decision to revoke TPLF’s legal status “unacceptable,” insisting the matter must be resolved politically, not through sanctions.

He warned that sidelining the TPLF risks undermining the Pretoria peace process and alienating broad segments of the Tigrayan political class. NEBE revoked the party’s status in May 2025 over failure to meet special requirements, but the TPLF rejected the move, saying its legitimacy comes from the Pretoria Agreement, not NEBE’s conditional framework.

#Floods displace over 4,000, destroy hundreds of homes in central #Sudan, #UN migration agency says

More than 4,200 people were displaced and 550 homes destroyed after heavy rains and flooding struck Umm al-Qura locality in central Sudan’s Al-Jazirah State, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said Sunday.

The floods hit Major 6 village in eastern Al-Jazirah on Friday, forcing 850 families – about 4,250 people – to flee their homes, the UN agency said in a statement.

Field teams reported the destruction of 550 houses, with displaced families taking shelter in open areas nearby, the organization added.

Sudan typically experiences heavy seasonal rains between June and October that trigger large-scale flooding.

The natural calamities came as a civil war between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) continues in Sudan since April 2023. The conflict has left tens of thousands of people dead and millions more displaced.

#Somalia reopens #Mogadishu voter registration under new election deal

Somalia’s electoral commission has reopened voter registration centers in Mogadishu, urging residents to sign up under a new electoral framework that reshapes how the country will vote in the next national election.

The National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission said the registration drive is open to both first-time voters and supporters of recently certified political associations, which are expected to shape Somalia’s developing multiparty system.

“The success of our democracy depends on active citizen participation,” the commission said in a statement Saturday. “We call on political associations to take the lead in ensuring every eligible Somali is registered and ready to vote.”

The reopening comes just weeks after the federal government and opposition groups signed a landmark deal on Aug. 25, 2025, that resolved months of disputes over Somalia’s election model.

#Sudanese army, #RSF battle for key routes in #North_Kordofan

Military confrontations between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) continued with intensified violence in North Kordofan state on Sunday.

For over a week, the Sudanese army has renewed its operations in the Kordofan region to expel the RSF from areas in south, north, and west Kordofan. The army’s strategic goal is to advance towards the Darfur region and break the long-standing siege on El Fasher, while the RSF aims to block this advance.

Local sources told Sudan Tribune that fierce battles broke out early in the morning on the vital Omdurman-Bara export road, near the RSF-controlled town of Jabra al-Sheikh. The army is seeking to secure the entire export route and connect Omdurman with the city of Bara. The RSF continues to hold positions in Jabra al-Sheikh, Umm Qirfa, and Rahid al-Nuba.

On September 11, the army successfully recaptured the city of Bara in North Kordofan, which had been under RSF control since the early months of the conflict.

#Op_ed: “War Is Peace”: #Ethiopia’s George Orwellian Playbook and the War on #Tigray

In 1984, George Orwell’s slogan “War is Peace” captures how authoritarian regimes distort truth to maintain control. In this op-ed, Desta Haileselassie argues that for many Ethiopians, this dystopian vision reflects their “lived reality under the administration of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.”

The author explains that since 2018, the Prime Minister has “branded himself as a peacemaker” and was “praised globally for his rapprochement with #Eritrea.” Yet, he contends that “behind the polished speeches and handshakes was a leader already laying the groundwork for a war” that has “engulfed Tigray in one of the deadliest humanitarian crises of the 21st century.” To support this claim, Desta highlights testimonies from former insiders, including the former #Amhara Regional Police Commissioner, who asserted that “the war started that night after we had already completed our preparations,” directly challenging the government’s claim that the war was merely a response to provocation by the #TPLF.

The author further notes that the war in Tigray was rooted in a long-secret pact with Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki. What was widely hailed as a peace deal, Desta argues, was in reality the basis of a “covert military alliance” to destroy Tigray. He cites a New York Times investigation that revealed the war “was planned months in advance,” the result of a coordinated effort between the two leaders.

The article contends that the administration of Prime Minister Abiy is once again recycling its 2020 playbook—accusing Tigray of “warmongering,” claiming it is “violating the Pretoria Agreement,” and deploying propaganda and “digital soldiers” to deflect blame.

However, Desta emphasizes that the message from Tigray’s leaders remains consistent: “They seeks dialogue, not destruction.” The region, he states, “is not calling for war” but is instead “calling for justice, dignity, and a lasting peace.”

Equity bank holds talks to enter #Ethiopia’s banking sector

Equity Bank Group has taken a major step toward expanding into Ethiopia after its Chief executive, James Mwangi (PhD), held talks with Zeleke Temesgen (PhD), Ethiopian Investment Commission (EIC) Commissioner, on Friday, according to Kenyan media.

Temesgen said the commission is ready to provide the necessary cooperation and support to facilitate the bank’s entry into the country’s financial sector. Mwangi added that Equity Bank had long planned to enter Ethiopia and that the government’s decision to open the financial sector to foreign investors created a favorable opportunity.

Headquartered in #Nairobi, Equity is among the largest banks in East and Central Africa by customer base and assets, with operations in Kenya, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan, and Tanzania.
