#Floods displace over 4,000, destroy hundreds of homes in central #Sudan, #UN migration agency says

More than 4,200 people were displaced and 550 homes destroyed after heavy rains and flooding struck Umm al-Qura locality in central Sudan’s Al-Jazirah State, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said Sunday.

The floods hit Major 6 village in eastern Al-Jazirah on Friday, forcing 850 families – about 4,250 people – to flee their homes, the UN agency said in a statement.

Field teams reported the destruction of 550 houses, with displaced families taking shelter in open areas nearby, the organization added.

Sudan typically experiences heavy seasonal rains between June and October that trigger large-scale flooding.

The natural calamities came as a civil war between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) continues in Sudan since April 2023. The conflict has left tens of thousands of people dead and millions more displaced.

#Somalia reopens #Mogadishu voter registration under new election deal

Somalia’s electoral commission has reopened voter registration centers in Mogadishu, urging residents to sign up under a new electoral framework that reshapes how the country will vote in the next national election.

The National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission said the registration drive is open to both first-time voters and supporters of recently certified political associations, which are expected to shape Somalia’s developing multiparty system.

“The success of our democracy depends on active citizen participation,” the commission said in a statement Saturday. “We call on political associations to take the lead in ensuring every eligible Somali is registered and ready to vote.”

The reopening comes just weeks after the federal government and opposition groups signed a landmark deal on Aug. 25, 2025, that resolved months of disputes over Somalia’s election model.

#Sudanese army, #RSF battle for key routes in #North_Kordofan

Military confrontations between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) continued with intensified violence in North Kordofan state on Sunday.

For over a week, the Sudanese army has renewed its operations in the Kordofan region to expel the RSF from areas in south, north, and west Kordofan. The army’s strategic goal is to advance towards the Darfur region and break the long-standing siege on El Fasher, while the RSF aims to block this advance.

Local sources told Sudan Tribune that fierce battles broke out early in the morning on the vital Omdurman-Bara export road, near the RSF-controlled town of Jabra al-Sheikh. The army is seeking to secure the entire export route and connect Omdurman with the city of Bara. The RSF continues to hold positions in Jabra al-Sheikh, Umm Qirfa, and Rahid al-Nuba.

On September 11, the army successfully recaptured the city of Bara in North Kordofan, which had been under RSF control since the early months of the conflict.

#Op_ed: “War Is Peace”: #Ethiopia’s George Orwellian Playbook and the War on #Tigray

In 1984, George Orwell’s slogan “War is Peace” captures how authoritarian regimes distort truth to maintain control. In this op-ed, Desta Haileselassie argues that for many Ethiopians, this dystopian vision reflects their “lived reality under the administration of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.”

The author explains that since 2018, the Prime Minister has “branded himself as a peacemaker” and was “praised globally for his rapprochement with #Eritrea.” Yet, he contends that “behind the polished speeches and handshakes was a leader already laying the groundwork for a war” that has “engulfed Tigray in one of the deadliest humanitarian crises of the 21st century.” To support this claim, Desta highlights testimonies from former insiders, including the former #Amhara Regional Police Commissioner, who asserted that “the war started that night after we had already completed our preparations,” directly challenging the government’s claim that the war was merely a response to provocation by the #TPLF.

The author further notes that the war in Tigray was rooted in a long-secret pact with Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki. What was widely hailed as a peace deal, Desta argues, was in reality the basis of a “covert military alliance” to destroy Tigray. He cites a New York Times investigation that revealed the war “was planned months in advance,” the result of a coordinated effort between the two leaders.

The article contends that the administration of Prime Minister Abiy is once again recycling its 2020 playbook—accusing Tigray of “warmongering,” claiming it is “violating the Pretoria Agreement,” and deploying propaganda and “digital soldiers” to deflect blame.

However, Desta emphasizes that the message from Tigray’s leaders remains consistent: “They seeks dialogue, not destruction.” The region, he states, “is not calling for war” but is instead “calling for justice, dignity, and a lasting peace.”

#Mekelle – The Global Society of Tigray Scholars and Professionals (#GSTS) has issued a strong appeal to the United Nations, African Union, diplomatic missions, and international human rights organizations, warning of what it described as “grave and escalating human rights violations” in Tigray.

In a statement issued on 13 September 2025, GSTS said the violations have intensified following the March 2025 overthrow of the Tigray Interim Administration (TIA) by a TPLF faction backed by military commanders. It stressed that the opportunity for peace, recovery, stability, and democratic transition under the TIA, led by President Tadesse Werede, has steadily deteriorated.

The group cited forced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, arbitrary arrests, unlawful removals from office, intimidation, and the suppression of local self-administration......

#Deadly attacks, collapsing services push #Sudan closer to catastrophe

According to local reports, heavy shelling and assaults late last week in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state, killed at least six civilians and injured scores more, triggering fresh displacement from the already besieged city.

Humanitarians warn that essential services are breaking down. Water trucking to the only functioning hospital was suspended over the weekend and community kitchens shut down after running out of food.

Without urgent support, they warn that the most vulnerable people could face severe hunger within days.

Across Darfur, hospitals remain under immense strain.

Nearly 100 wounded people, including women and children, were admitted to medical facilities in a single day last week, with several pronounced dead on arrival, according to reports from the medical charity Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF – Doctors Without Borders).

Survivors who managed to escape El Fasher described “unbearable” conditions in the city, which has endured more than a year of siege by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and allied groups

Reports from the United Arab Emirates indicate ongoing efforts to bring together Somalia’s Federal Government and the leaders of the Puntland and Jubaland regional states to resolve a longstanding political dispute.

The presidents of Jubaland and Puntland, Ahmed Mohamed Islam (Ahmed Madobe) and Said Abdullahi Deni, are currently in the UAE holding separate meetings with senior Emirati officials.

The UAE is playing a mediating role in the talks, aiming to broker a lasting solution to the conflict that has persisted for several years.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that Somalia’s Federal President, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, is expected to visit the UAE after concluding his participation in the Islamic and Arab countries summit in Qatar.

#UN inquiry finds #Israel’s war on #Gaza to be genocide

A United Nations inquiry has found that Israel’s war on Gaza is a genocide, a landmark moment after nearly two years of war.

Navi Pillay, chair of the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, made the announcement of the UN inquiry to Al Jazeera on Tuesday.

“We’ve identified the president [Isaac Herzog], the Prime Minister [Benjamin] Netanyahu and the former minister of defence [Yoav Gallant] based on their statements and the orders that they’ve given,” Pillay said in an interview.

“Because these three individuals were agents of the state, under the law, the state is held responsible. So we say it’s [the] state of Israel that has committed genocide,” she added.

According to the report, the Commission found that along with the statements made by the Israeli officials, there was “circumstantial evidence” that led to their findings of genocidal intent.

#Arab_League contemplates forming joint military force

The Arab League of Nations is mulling forming a joint military force due to growing concerns over security within the Middle East and the Horn of Africa as it seeks to assert authority by pushing for trade and investment.

Egypt first tabled the proposal, a senior member of the union, which suggested a move to establish a joint Arab military force, comprising land, sea, air, and special forces with a central command, similar to the US Africa Command.

Funding and equipment would be contributed by all Arab League member states, aiming for rapid defense and strike capabilities amid global conflicts, according to a report by UAE-based The National, a move that could enhance the member states' response to disasters in the region.

Op-ed: The Unfinished #GERD: Meles and value creation

The author of this must-read op-ed argues that #GERD was #Meles_Zenawi’s bold vision for Ethiopia: a shift from the Ethiopian state’s long history of predation, where “power was synonyms with plunder that often ended in ruin, and “to rule meant to extract tribute, labor and life from the peasantry that continued to survive on the edge of life”, to a politics of value creation.

“I have a dream… to turn the waters of all our rivers into oil - an inexhaustible source of clean energy, powerful enough to fuel industries, to bring light to every home, and to give hope to every young generation…” Meles told Pietro Salini, CEO of Webuild.

Yet, upon completion, GERD’s meaning has become a scarcity to scramble over, it is being absorbed into the logic of predation, its essence betrayed and reduced to “a trophy and spectacle of incumbency.”

#Ethiopia to reshape universities with new specialization reform

Prof. Berhanu Nega, Minister of Education, said the government is reforming higher education to address long-standing shortcomings caused by politicization and lack of focus in universities.

Speaking on the legacy of the Civil Service University, Prof. Berhanu noted that institutions meant to produce capable public servants were hindered by "political influence and a system that prioritized quantity over quality."

He emphasized that the country’s 47 public universities have traditionally offered all fields of study without adequate capacity, resulting in weak outcomes. The new reform directs universities to specialize based on their location and strengths, with the aim of producing highly skilled graduates in critical areas of national development.

#South_Sudan’s leaders engage in ‘systematic looting’ in poor nation: #UN

United Nations investigators have accused South Sudanese authorities of plundering one of the world’s youngest and most impoverished nations’ wealth of billions of dollars in public funds stolen as the majority of the country deals with a deepening food crisis.

In a report made public on Tuesday, the UN Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan says authorities allegedly used several schemes to divert significant amounts of money from public revenue since the country’s independence in 2011.

“The country has been captured by a predatory elite that has institutionalised the systematic looting of the nation’s wealth for private gain,” said the commission, according to the Reuters news agency.

“While a small group of powerful actors pillage and loot the country’s wealth and resources, enriching themselves, the state has effectively abdicated its sovereign responsibilities to its population, outsourcing critical services — such as the provision of food, health care, and education to international donors,” the report says.

“Corruption is killing South Sudanese,” it adds.
