#Netherlands court tries #Eritrean man accused of running brutal migrant smuggling network

A Dutch court opened a trial on Monday of an Eritrean man accused of involvement in a brutal migrant smuggling network.

Prosecutors say Tewelde Goitom, also known as Amanuel Walid, ran an operation to bring East African migrants to #Europe under horrific conditions, demanding huge sums of money from their relatives to free them from camps in Libya.

He was extradited to the Netherlands from #Ethiopia in 2022 where he was convicted of similar crimes but claims in this case he is the victim of mistaken identity. "I am still the one I said I was earlier," he said when asked to introduce himself, speaking via an interpreter.

The trial is one of the largest human smuggling cases ever brought in the Netherlands, prosecutors said, and will continue for the next three weeks.....

#Tigray: Time for a new leadership

Five years ago, the Federal Government of #Ethiopia and the State of #Eritrea went to war against Tigray. Three years ago, the Ethiopian government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front declared a truce. The Permanent Cessation of Hostilities Agreement signed in #Pretoria was imperfect but better than continued war and genocide.

Today, Tigray is utterly defeated. Tigray’s own leaders have turned a truce into a defeat. Shame on those leaders of the TPLF. Shame on them for betrayal, venality, selfishness and short-sightedness.

In 2020, the #TPLF led Tigray into the war—a war not of its own making, but a war that it could have avoided or at least prepared for.

From November 2020 to November 2022, Tigray lost one in six of its people from war and war crimes including starvation and disease. The basic social and economic infrastructure of the region including public and privately owned businesses....

Hunger monitor says parts of #South_Sudan face famine threat after months without aid

No food aid has reached a conflict-hit area of South Sudan this year despite growing fears that it is headed toward famine, international food security analysts said Tuesday.

The report by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, a global monitor, estimates that 28,000 people in Nasir and Fangak counties face “catastrophic food insecurity,” the most severe level of hunger.

“An immediate and large-scale response” is required, it says.

Both counties have been historically controlled by the #SPLM-IO opposition party led by suspended First Vice President Riek Machar.

Machar has been charged with treason and other crimes that he denies over an attack by a local militia on a military garrison in Nasir that South Sudan’s government says killed 250 soldiers. Government-led military operations, including dozens of.....

Field Marshal Birhanu Jula, Chief of Staff of the Ethiopian National Defense Forces (#ENDF), used the fifth anniversary of the outbreak of the northern war to launch a condemnation and scathing criticism of what he called a “great betrayal” by a “small clique” within the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) who he said “should be eliminated” if #Ethiopia is to live peacefully.

Speaking during a memorial ceremony of the November 2020 outbreak of War in the Tigray region, which was held on Monday, 3 November, at the Bishoftu Air Force Training Center, the Army Chief also urged the people of Tigray to “liberate themselves” from what he described as the TPLF’s “criminal clique.”

#Commentary: Neo-Patrimonial Trap: Systemic analysis of institutional, cultural failure in #Ethiopia's fight against corruption

Corruption in Ethiopia is “not merely a collection of isolated regulatory failures but a deep-seated, systemic crisis” rooted in “a neo-patrimonial political culture,” writes Mohammedawel Hagos. He argues that stalled development stems from “a dangerous synergy between a clientelist state structure, the politicization of economic policy, and a destructive social ethos that actively normalizes graft and punishes integrity.”

The author explains that historical patrimonialism, cultural norms, and low salaries have created a “desperation economy” where bribery is a survival strategy, reflecting “a fundamental lack of public trust in government institutions.”

News: U.S. Senate foreign relations committee calls for full implementation of #Pretoria agreement

#US. Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman, #Senator Jim Risch, has urged renewed efforts to fully implement the Pretoria peace agreement, marking five years since the outbreak of the #Tigray war.

In a statement posted on the Committee’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, Senator Risch said that while the United States helped stop the fighting, the agreement “remains only partly fulfilled.” He noted that Tigray “is still unstable,” adding that “there is no justice for victims, and tensions with #Eritrea continue.”

Risch underscored that a secure and peaceful Horn of Africa is vital to protecting U.S. interests, preventing extremist threats, stabilizing regional partners, and aiding millions who continue to suffer from the effects of the war.

Meanwhile opposition parties in Tigray echoed the same message. “#Salsay_Weyane Tigray observes the fifth anniversary....

#Context: The reported hostilities in the #Afar region today come amid deepening political and military divisions within the #Tigray region and the emergence of a splinter armed group known as the “Tigray Peace Force (TPF),” which operates along the Afar–Tigray border and opposes the TPLF leadership in Tigray.

Leaders of the TPF claim they are operating in what they describe as “a free land.” Earlier this month, Lt. Gen. Tadesse Werede, rejected that claim, stating, “the free land is not inside Tigray; the free land is inside the Afar Regional State.”

Tadesse said differences with the group must be resolved peacefully, but cautioned that “any provocation coming from the Afar Region will be considered to be from the Afar Gov't or the Federal Gov't, and will not be considered as being carried out by Tegaru.”

He further called on all armed groups operating in the Afar Regional State to “lay down their weapons” and commit to dialogue.

#Sudan: Dozens killed in attack on funeral in Kordofan region

A deadly drone attack took place in el-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan state, as the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces were preparing to launch an assault on the army in the region.

At least 40 people were killed in an attack on a funeral in el-Obeid, a key city in Sudan's central Kordofan region which is contested by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the army.
