News: Protests held in #Afar woredas demanding #Tigray Forces withdraw from villages occupied in Megale

Protests condemning an attack by Tigray security forces in Tonsa Kebele of #Megale Woreda in the Afar Regional State and demanding the withdrawal of the forces from occupied villages have been held across several Woredas of the region over the past two days, residents and officials told Addis Standard.

A resident of Tonsa Kebele, who requested anonymity for security reasons, said Tigray forces have taken control of the villages of Wara’a, Karfatu, Milki, Mila, Warqa, Doya, and Qela Gobe.
“A number of residents were forced to leave their homes,” the resident said, adding that “the majority of the displaced are now facing severe hardship due to the scorching sun during the day and the cold at night.”

A humanitarian aid source in the Afar Region, quoted by AFP, confirmed the attack...

The unbroken spirits: Northern #Ethiopian women carrying generations forward

In the hills of #Tigray, where displacement has reshaped daily life, strength often reveals itself in small, steady gestures. Belaynesh grips her white jerrycan with steady hands. What once felt unbearably heavy now feels lighter, almost routine. With new water points nearby & protection services in place, the endless walks and the fear that once shadowed her have finally begun to fade.

Often cast as the most vulnerable, women in displacement settings stand as powerful examples of strength. In this chapter, they show us how they live, how they parent with grace and raise their children with dignity in the face of adversity, all while passing on the most important values of life to the next generation.

A humble beginning

#Commentary: #Ethiopia’s Maritime Bet: From strategic vision to diplomatic hesitation on MoU with #Somaliland

The January 2024 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Ethiopia and Somaliland was intended to be “a potential seismic shift in the Horn of Africa's geopolitical architecture,” writes Gulaid Yusuf Idaan. He argues, however, that its collapse represents “the central failure of Ethiopia's contemporary foreign policy… because of #Addis_Abeba's inability to execute its own strategic vision.”

The author recalls that the international backlash, led by #Somalia’s condemnation and pressure from others, was swift, resulting in “Ethiopia's subsequent retreat,” which “transformed the agreement from a potential geopolitical realignment into yet another provisional access arrangement.”

Idaan emphasizes that the failure was rooted in Ethiopia’s “structural constraints,” noting that “the Somaliland MoU was not defeated primarily by external pressure."

#Ethiopia’s plan to swap dollar debt for #Yuan draws IMF warning over currency risk

The International Monetary Fund (#IMF) has cautioned countries including Ethiopia against potential currency risks as they move to convert dollar-denominated loans from #China into Yuan in a bid to reduce debt servicing costs, Bloomberg reported.

In an emailed response to the outlet, the Washington D.C.-based lender described such moves as “proactive debt management,” but warned that benefits must be weighed carefully against new financial vulnerabilities they may introduce.

“While these transactions may lower costs, they can also introduce currency risks depending on their structure,” an IMF spokesperson said. “The IMF encourages countries to consider such operations within comprehensive medium-term debt and reserve management strategies to ensure an appropriate balance between cost and risk.”

#Ethiopia: Court clears former State Minister Taye Dendea of two charges, convicts on third

Addis Abeba - The Lideta Branch of the Federal High Court has acquitted former State Minister of Peace, #Taye Dendea, of two out of three criminal charges brought against him, while convicting him on one count related to the unlawful possession of a firearm, his lawyer, Abera Nigus, told Addis Standard on Wednesday, 12 November 2025.

Abera said the court ruled that Taye was not guilty of the first two accusations — providing moral and verbal support to armed groups designated by the government as enemies, and assisting efforts to overthrow the government by force. “The court decided that the statements & posts the prosecution presented as evidence did not constitute criminal acts & were protected under his right to freedom of expression,” Abera explained.

The court, however, found Taye guilty

A group of ten #Ethiopian opposition parties has urged the government to implement “foundational democratic reforms” and unconditionally open the political space ahead of the 2026 general election, warning that proceeding under the current conditions would amount to “a calendar without democracy.”

Trump’s decision that the #US boycott the G20 summit is ‘their loss,’ #South_African president says

U.S. President Donald #Trump’s decision that the United States government boycott the Group of 20 summit next weekend in South Africa is “their loss,” South Africa’s leader said Wednesday.

South African President Cyril #Ramaphosa added that “the United States needs to think again whether boycott politics actually works, because in my experience it doesn’t work.”

Trump announced last week on social media that no U.S. government official would attend the Nov. 22-23 meeting of leaders from 19 of the world’s richest and leading developing economies in Johannesburg, citing his widely rejected claims that members of a white minority group in South Africa are being violently persecuted and having their land taken from them because of their race.

The U.S. president has for months targeted South Africa’s Black-led...

A US jury in the first civil trial over a fatal Boeing 737 MAX crash determined Wednesday that the aircraft manufacturing giant owes $28.45 million to the family of a newly-wed Indian victim.

The case involves the survivors of Shikha Garg of New Delhi, who died in the March 2019 Ethiopian Airlines crash, one of two fatal MAX crashes that together claimed 346 lives.

After about two hours of deliberation, a jury in federal court in Chicago returned with an award that included $10 million for grief, $10 million for Garg's pain and suffering, and other compensation.

"We happily accept the verdict. We came here for a jury trial & it's absolutely acceptable," Garg's widower, Soumya Bhattacharya, told AFP.

Boeing expressed regret about the deadly accidents. "We are deeply sorry to all who lost loved ones on Lion Air..

#Dangote pledges USD 1 Billion investment in #Zimbabwe cement, power and infrastructure

Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote on Wednesday, November 12, announced a plan to invest 1 billion dollars in Zimbabwe, targeting the cement, power and infrastructure sectors. The announcement followed a meeting with President Emmerson Mnangagwa, where the Dangote Group and the government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

The move signals Dangote’s return to Zimbabwe nearly a decade after his first visit in 2015 under former President Robert Mugabe.

At the time, the Dangote Group had proposed a 400 million dollar cement plant with an annual production capacity of 1.5 million tonnes, along with projects in the energy and fertilizer sectors. These plans did not go ahead because of disputes with the government related to guarantees, bureaucracy and slow administrative procedures.

#Opinion: Citizens by Blood, Strangers by Bureaucracy: Unfinished struggle for gender equality in #Ethiopia’s nationality law

“More than two decades after Ethiopia pledged full gender equality in its nationality law, women continue to face barriers that men rarely encounter,” writes Cassadee Yan. She emphasizes that despite the 2003 Nationality Proclamation guaranteeing equality, its promise remains “uneven and often illusory.”

The author highlights that women registering their children still face “administrative patriarchy”—hidden discrimination through missing forms, unnecessary verifications, and endless referrals. The impact is severe. Children born to foreign or absent fathers are often denied nationality documents, leaving them “Ethiopian by blood but strangers by bureaucracy.”

Yan calls for reform rooted in trust, not red tape: “Trusting women—their testimony, their documents, their citizenship—as fully as men’s.”

Mohammed bin Salman expected to lobby Trump over #UAE role in #Sudan, sources say

Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammad #bin_Salman is expected to lobby US President Donald #Trump over the UAE’s support for the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (#RSF) in Sudan when the two leaders meet at the White House next week, multiple Arab and western officials have told Middle East Eye.

The move, which follows a phone call last week between Mohammed bin Salman and Sudanese Armed Forces (#SAF) commander Abdul Fattah al-Burhan, would mark a rare direct engagement between the Saudi ruler and Trump on Sudan.

Until now, the conflict, which has been raging since April 2023, has taken a backseat diplomatically to Israel's genocide in Gaza, tensions with Iran and Syria's entry into the US-aligned regional fold.

But the RSF's takeover of el-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, where its fighters have ...

News: Genocide Watch raises alarm over rights abuses, discrimination against #Afar and other minorities in #Eritrea

#Genocide_Watch has reported that more than 57,000 Afar people have fled Eritrea as refugees, seeking shelter in neighboring Ethiopia, amid what it described as systematic discrimination and violence against the Indigenous community.

According to the report, the Afar — one of Eritrea’s most marginalized groups — have faced decades of state-led repression. The organization said government policies have displaced Afar communities from their ancestral lands, banned their traditional fishing activities, and resulted in mass arrests.

Furthermore, Genocide Watch also denounced Eritrea’s actions during the war in Tigray, recommending that a case be brought before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to prosecute Eritrea.

News: Crop failure grips #East_Hararghe after failed rainy seasons, FEWS NET warns of acute food insecurity

Residents of East Hararghe Zone in eastern #Ethiopia say that their crops have withered following two consecutive failed rainy seasons, leading to widespread crop loss.

The Famine Early Warning Systems Network (#FEWS NET) has warned that the ongoing drought could expose communities in the area to severe food shortages by early 2026.

Ahmed Abdulle, a resident of Suula kebele in Babille district, told Addis Standard that all his crops have been destroyed. “Everything I planted on my farmland dried up because of the drought,” he said, adding that livestock are also facing feed shortages.

The FEWS NET issued a report in late October 2025, warning that poor rainfall during two consecutive rainy seasons has worsened drought conditions across eastern Ethiopia.

'A Crisis of colossal scale': The illegal gold rush tearing #Ethiopia apart

A new investigation by The Bureau of Investigative Journalism (#TBIJ) has uncovered a vast and rapidly expanding illegal gold mining industry in Ethiopia’s #Tigray region, involving foreign investors, local military networks, & unregulated mining practices that are devastating communities and the environment.

According to the report, illegal gold extraction has surged since the end of the civil war, as Chinese and Western companies work side by side to exploit gold-rich areas amid weak oversight. “Shady foreign investors” have allegedly joined forces with local military figures to profit from the trade, TBIJ said, describing the situation as “a crisis of colossal scale.”

The investigation identified sites such as Mato Bula & Da Tambuk—now worth billions of dollars—as centers of illicit activity ...
