#AU, key partners urged to act as rights group warns #Ethiopia truce ‘unraveling’

Human Rights Watch has warned that the African Union (AU)-brokered truce that halted large-scale fighting in northern Ethiopia in November 2022 is at risk, & called on regional and international actors to urgently intervene to prevent renewed atrocities.

In a new dispatch, the rights group said that while the ceasefire between the federal government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (#TPLF) largely reduced active hostilities, the monitoring mechanism “failed to pay attention to human rights abuses,” allowing parties to continue targeting civilians in Tigray, including actors that did not sign the agreement.

Human Rights Watch said neither the Ethiopian nor Eritrean authorities have “credibly prosecuted” those responsible for grave abuses committed during the 2020–2022 conflict, which was marked ...

#Trump says he's terminating legal protections for #SOMALI migrants in Minnesota

President Donald Trump has said that he's “immediately” terminating temporary legal protections for Somali migrants living in Minnesota, further targeting a programme seeking to limit deportations that his administration has already repeatedly sought to weaken.

Minnesota has the nation's largest Somali community. Many fled the long civil war in their east African country and were drawn to the state's welcoming social programs.

But how many migrants would be affected by Trump's announcement Friday night that he wants to end temporary protective status could be very small. A report produced for Congress in August put the number of Somalis covered by the programme at just 705 nationwide.

Congress created the programme granting Temporary Protective Status in 1990. It was meant to prevent deportations of people to countries ...

#Kenyan court suspends directive halting registration of Eritrean, Ethiopian asylum seekers

A High Court in Nairobi has temporarily suspended a Kenyan government directive that halted the registration of asylum seekers from #Ethiopia and #Eritrea, The EastAfrican reported.

Kenya’s Commissioner for Refugee Affairs had issued the directive on 31 July 2025, suspending the registration of asylum seekers from the two countries. A consortium of NGOs challenged the decision in court, arguing that it was discriminatory and violated Kenya’s obligations under domestic, regional and international refugee law.

In its interim ruling, the High Court found that the petitioners had established an arguable case and that there was a real risk of harm to asylum seekers from Ethiopia and Eritrea if the directive remained in force.

“In the circumstances, therefore, all factors considered and without ...

#Ethiopia: Silent Epidemic: How #virtual_gambling is derailing youths

The first thing Chala Marema remembers is the sound. Not the lecture behind him, but the shooting sound coming from the screen in his palm: numbers climbing, breath quickening, then the sharp snap of everything disappearing.

He describes that snap as a sudden cut-off, a sound that feels like someone pulling the floor out from under you.

That sound, the frantic ticking of numbers multiplying on his phone followed by the sharp digital snap of everything disappearing, has become what he describes as the anthem of a generation trading futures for virtual fortunes.

Chala heard it inside #Addis_Abeba University lecture halls, his phone glowing beneath the desk. “I would buy mobile data specifically to gamble during classes,” he recalls. “While professors taught, I watched numbers climb, chasing digital wins as my education evaporated.” The professor’s voice, he says, had become “just background noise.”

#Sudan’s Burhan accuses US envoy of obstructing peace, serving #UAE

Sudan’s army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan on Sunday rejected a new #US. proposal presented by White House adviser Massad Boulos, branding it the “worst paper” submitted to date for demanding the dissolution of state security agencies while leaving paramilitary forces intact.

Burhan addressed senior army officers of the rank of major general and above in Khartoum. He was accompanied by his assistants General Yasir Al-Atta and General Ibrahim Jabir, as well as the army chief of staff and his deputies, the deputy directors of the police and General Intelligence Service, and a representative of the Joint Forces.

During the meeting, Burhan warned that if the mediation process continued in this direction, the army would consider it “non-neutral,” accusing the U.S. envoy of attempting to impose dictates on the country.

“The paper presented by the Quad through Massad Boulos… is considered the ...

#Somalia’s president and predecessor trade accusations over rising poverty in #Mogadishu

Somalia's former President Mohamed Abdullahi #Farmajo & incumbent President #Hassan Sheikh Mohamud have exchanged pointed remarks over an escalating poverty crisis in Mogadishu, after Farmajo made his first public appearance since losing the 2022 election.

Speaking on Saturday to a group of MPs in the capital, Farmajo — who returned to Mogadishu earlier this month — warned that the city was facing a dire humanitarian situation, claiming many residents could no longer afford even a single daily meal.

“I have researched this thoroughly & found that the country is in a severe crisis," he told lawmakers. "People are talking about levels of hardship that some of you may not be aware of. Many citizens eat only one meal a day — or once every two days."

Mohamud Acknowledges Hardship but Defends Security ..

#Commentary: Birr in Freefall: #Ethiopia’s struggle with record currency depreciation, imported inflation risk

In July 2024, Ethiopia shifted from a crawling-peg to a market-based exchange rate system, leading to a rapid depreciation of the birr. Samson Hailu, the writer of this commentary, notes the currency fell by over 165% in 15 months, adding that “the magnitude of the birr's depreciation outside the formal banking system is even alarming,” with forex bureaus trading at 177 birr per dollar, “marking a depreciation of over 216% since August 2025.”

While the reform boosted exports, he contends it also triggered “short-term inflationary pressures.” A weaker birr makes imports expensive and raises production costs. Low-income households are hardest hit, as “imported inflation functions as a regressive tax.”

Samson argues that the reform, though “a necessary structural adjustment,” demands urgent action, including tighter monetary policy.

Prosecutors have introduced three new charges against former State Minister of Peace and #Oromia Regional Council (Chafe Oromia) member Taye Dendea during a hearing held today, 24 November, according to his defense lawyer, Abera Negus, who spoke to Addis Standard.

The new charges were filed despite the hearing being originally scheduled for the submission of sentencing recommendations related to a previous conviction on one count: unlawful possession of a firearm. Taye had been acquitted of the other two charges in that case during his last court appearance.

Abera said the prosecutor “appeared with three additional charges instead of presenting sentencing recommendations,” adding that the defense was not notified in advance of this procedural shift.

According to Abera, all three additional charges stem from comments Taye made during a ...

In a statement issued Sunday, the party accused certain intellectuals and religious figures—whom it says previously “played a role in inciting the displacement of the people of Tigray” of continuing to disrupt ongoing efforts by “spreading rhetoric and taking irresponsible actions” against the constitutional order.
