#UN agency says over 1,600 civilians fled #Sudan's #Kordofan in one day

More than 1,600 Sudanese civilians fled the town of Kertala in South Kordofan in one day as insecurity escalated alongside rising abuses by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said.

The UN agency said on Sunday that field teams from its displacement tracking matrix estimated that 1,625 people left Kertala on November 28 because of worsening security conditions tied to RSF violations.

The agency said that the displaced people moved to scattered sites across Dalami locality, warning that conditions in the area remain volatile and tense.

Earlier on Sunday, the Sudanese army seized several areas west of Abbasiya Tagali in South Kordofan after clashes with the RSF and its ally, the SPLM-North faction, witnesses told Anadolu Agency.

On Friday and Saturday, the army repelled an RSF attack on Kertala in the same state.

The latest wave of displacement follows RSF attacks – with support from the SPLM-North faction – on several villages in South Kordofan, including abductions of young people for forced recruitment.

#WHO: 40.8 million people living with #HIV globally, 64% in Africa amid funding cuts

An estimated 40.8 million people were living with HIV worldwide at the end of 2024, with more than 64% in the #African Region, according to new figures from the World Health Organization (WHO). The WHO report shows the African Region accounted for 26.3 million people living with HIV in 2024, alongside 650,000 new HIV acquisitions and 380,000 HIV-related deaths. Globally, 1.3 million people acquired HIV and 630,000 died from HIV-related causes that year.

#Op_ed: No Luxury for Division: Why #Tigray needs united front, not proliferating parties and side structures

Tigray is navigating its most precarious chapter, "not transitioning into stability but sinking into a new form of paralysis," writes Mulat Gebreslassie. More than two years after the #Pretoria Agreement, he notes, “The people, still reeling from a genocidal war, blockade, and famine, are looking for a way out. Yet, what they are receiving from their elite is not a lifeline but a labyrinth of new political structures.”

This division, he argues, is a “fundamental misreading of the moment”—for in a post-war society, “fragmentation is fatal.”

The solution, Mulat contends, is a united front—a “single diplomatic channel," the consolidation of resources, and "the amnesty of egos" among leaders.

#Somali defense minister, army chief travel to Egypt as #Cairo plans troop deployment in Somalia

Somalia’s Defense Minister, Ahmed Macalin Fiqi, accompanied by the country’s army chief, arrived in #Egypt on Monday for a previously unannounced visit aimed at strengthening strategic ties and regional security cooperation, government sources said.

The visit comes as Egypt prepares to deploy troops to Somalia to support the underfunded African Union mission, #AUSSOM, which faces logistical and financial challenges.

Egypt is currently engaged in a political dispute with Ethiopia over the Grand Renaissance Dam on the Nile, and analysts suggest the troop deployment may also be part of a broader strategy to counter Ethiopia’s regional influence while expanding Egypt’s military presence in the Horn of Africa.

“Focus of the trip is on strengthening military cooperation, training ...

#Ethiopia: President Tadesse says budget freeze leaves #Tigray unable to pay civil servants, banks short of cash, warns fragile peace at risk

Tigray Interim Admin (#TIA) President Lt. Gen. Tadesse Worede has warned that the region’s fragile post-Pretoria peace is under serious strain as a federal budget freeze has left the administration unable to pay civil servants or maintain essential services.

He said the economic pressure extends beyond unpaid salaries, with severe cash-flow shortages leaving banks “running out of cash” & preventing residents from accessing their own money, describing the measures as “absolutely unacceptable.”

Speaking at a mass gathering in #Aksum during the Hidar Zion celebrations on Sunday, President Tadesse said the delay in federal budget subsidy transfers has intensified existing pressures at a time when the administration is “making every effort to prevent a slide back into war.”
He noted that the budget subsidy has not been sent ....

#UN calls for unhindered humanitarian access in #Sudan as #RSF's violations persist

The UN has renewed its urgent call to all parties in Sudan to guarantee "safe, unhindered humanitarian access" for civilians and aid workers, as violations by paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) continue to drive massive displacement and rising needs.

"We once again call on all parties to urgently guarantee safe, unhindered humanitarian access to protect civilians, including, of course, aid workers," spokesperson Stephane Dujarric told reporters on Monday.

He said UN humanitarian teams recently met displaced families who urgently require shelter, essential items, health services, and sanitation assistance.

While the UN is providing food and psychosocial support, Dujarric warned that "funding shortfalls have left critical gaps," stressing the vital need for donors to commit additional resources.

The conflict between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, which began in April 2023, has already killed thousands of people, displaced at least 12 million and led to one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.

#Sudan Offers #Russia Its First Naval Base in Africa

Red Sea port would give Moscow a vital edge in the strategic waters

Sudan’s military government has offered Russia what would be its first naval base in Africa and an unprecedented perch overlooking critical #Red_Sea trade routes, according to Sudanese officials.

The deal, if it happens, would be a strategic advantage for #Moscow, which has struggled to deepen its foothold on the continent. It would be a troubling development for the #US., which has sought to keep Russia and #China from controlling African ports where they could rearm and refit warships and, potentially, choke off vital sea lanes.

Under a 25-year proposal Sudan’s military government presented to Russian officials in October, Moscow would have the right to station up to 300 troops & dock as many as four warships—including nuclear-powered ones—at Port Sudan or another, yet-to-be-named Red Sea...
