Sudan's air force has carried out bombings in which at least 1,700 civilians have died in attacks on residential neighbourhoods, markets, schools and camps for displaced people, according to an investigation into air raids in the country's civil war.
The Sudan Witness Project says it has compiled the largest known dataset of military airstrikes in the conflict, which began in April 2023.
Its analysis indicates that the air force has used unguided bombs in populated areas.
The data focuses on attacks by warplanes, which only the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) is capable of operating. Its rival, the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) does not have aircraft. It launches drone strikes, but drones were excluded from the research.
The RSF has been internationally condemned for allegedly carrying out ethnic massacres in Sudan's western Darfur region, triggering charges of genocide by the United States.
"The RSF are being held responsible for a lot of damage and violations, and I think rightly so," says Mark Snoeck, who ran the project. "But I think the SAF should also be held accountable for their actions."
The military has also faced international criticism, accused of indiscriminate bombings.

The Commission of Inquiry on Tigray Genocide (CITG) has called for renewed international action to address atrocities committed in Tigray, issuing a statement on the occasion of the #UN’s International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of Genocide, marked annually on 9 December.
In its statement, the Commission said the global community had “failed to uphold the promise of ‘Never Again’,” alleging that genocide unfolded against the Tigrayan population despite a decade of international commitments to prevent such crimes. Over 1.4 Million Malaria infections reported across #Ethiopia in two months, #UNICEF says
More than 1.4 million #malaria cases and 51 related deaths were recorded across Ethiopia between 1 September and 31 October 2025, according to UNICEF’s latest Ethiopia Humanitarian Situation Update.
UNICEF reported a total of 1,439,158 malaria cases during the two-month period, noting that infections were heavily concentrated in five regions: #Oromia (27.4%), #Amhara (24.3%), Southern Ethiopia (13.1%), Southwestern Ethiopia (8.2%), and Central Ethiopia (8.4%). At least one malaria case was reported in 913 woredas, with laboratory confirmation reaching 92.3%. Plasmodium falciparum accounted for 60.8% of confirmed infections.
The update also highlighted that 116,162 children under five suffering from acute malnutrition received lifesaving treatment nationwide during the same period.

The United States government has issued sanctions against four Colombian nationals and the four businesses they help run, accusing them of forming a “transnational network” to profit from Sudan’s civil war.
On Tuesday, the US Treasury published a statement identifying Alvaro Andres Quijano Becerra, Claudia Viviana Oliveros Forero, Mateo Andres Duque Botero and Monica Munoz Ucros as participants in a scheme to recruit former members of Colombia’s military to fight in Sudan.
Once in the East African country, the former soldiers are allegedly used to train the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group that has been locked in a power struggle against Sudan’s government forces.
“The RSF has shown again and again that it is willing to target civilians — including infants and young children. Its brutality has deepened the conflict and destabilized the region, creating the conditions for terrorist groups to grow,” Treasury official John K Hurley said in a statement.
The conflict, the Treasury added, “has provoked the world’s worst ongoing humanitarian crisis”.
Fighting has raged in Sudan since the outbreak of war in April 2023, and more than 12.4 million people have been forced from their homes, contributing to displacement both within the country’s borders and in surrounding areas. More than 3.3 million people have fled Sudan as refugees.
